This is Athletics. One of the most vital ports of college life is found on field, floor, diamond, mat, pool, and track. Remember the joy of carrying home laurels for boo ting the unbeatable team ? The success or failure of our teams affects the atmosphere of the whole school. We participate in campus sports and are rewarded as we realize the virtues of teamwork and recreation. If wo learn to play together, we can better learn to work together. 127 Athletics Football With ‘‘Rompin'’ John Roning, Mr. Hoad Football and Director of Athletics at Utah State, calling the plays the Aggies turned in a record of third place in Skyline Eight competition and an impressive 35 to 19 victory over Utah. Everette Faunce John Roning Ralph Moughnan Baclf.eld Coach Hood Coach Freihmen Coach Calwin Stoll line Coach 128 129 Athletics Football Under the guidance of Coach John Roning, the Utags garnered a third place ranking in the Skyline Conference. This year was one of the most spectacular episodes in the football history of Utah' State with the sinking of Utah University by a score of 35-19 on Thanksgiving Day. The total of 35 points was the greatest amount ever scored upon the Redskins since their school began. This was our day! Three of our seniors who have meant power plus to the Aggie squad were selected on the All-Conference Team — Tom Lorenat, Carl Ebert, and Charles Hatch. Homecoming Day found tho Ags host to B.Y.U., who were ofter the wheel . .. but they didn't get it. We didn't take the conference title, but we opened the eyes of thousands near and far. Hampered by height, as has been the case in the last three years, the Bakermen overcame this deficiency in speed, spirit, and accuracy. Everyone realizes that Utah defeated the numbor one team in the nation at the beginning of the season. Late in the season B.Y.U. whipped Utah on their own court. But when B.Y.U. met the Aggies, we sent them down 62-58. Then the revenge-minded Cougars invaded Aggieland and tasted defeat once again. Hamperod by a lack in depth, we gained several main placings, but we didn't procure the conference title. The year 1955 found Cordell Brown, Doug Anderson, and Ezra Smith turning in their usual fine performances. At the beginning of the season we were picked to be a strong contender for top spot. We readily upheld this anticipation. r George Smith, Maceyo Vaughan, Doug Anderson, Ezra Smith, and Matt Trontel vied for track honors in Conference competition. 139 Athletics Baseball Due to an unexpected shuffle in the coaching staff, this year’s baseball squad was coached by Captain McCormick of the Military Department. He replaced Ev Faunce who was graduated to the position of Head Football Coach. Dave Kragthorpe, Marlin Shields, Pete Spareboom, Scot Jeffs, Dan McFaddin, Bob Buffington, and Denny Lindsay are our returning lettermen to America’s favorite sport. One of the more difficult sports to play correctly, tennis adds a perfect means of keeping in condition. Two of our mainstays, Dow Woodward and Ivan Christensen, are back again this year to insure threat to all opponents. Swimming Utah State's swimming team ran up against some extremely powerful forces. Hampered by inexperience, the mermen were unablo to acquire an upper division position. Nevertheless, we are looking forward to a profitable season next year, with five returning men. Athletics Wrestling This year our grapplers were extremely hampored by injuries and untimely misfortunes, but were nevertheless able to turn in creditable showings. Coach Nelson's boys showed true Aggie spirit in defeating the University of Utah twice by vast margins. We didn't have any All-Conference selections this year, but several of our boys reached high on the conference ladder. r Jim Marriot stalks Colorado foe. left to Right, Row On : Noel Schvaneveldt, Harry Uyemottu, Boyd Whitby. The shorter than average frosh hoopsters racked up a 6-4 record in season play. This year’s squad represents talent from all over the United States, as well as local all-staters. An old Aggie himself, Coach Ralph Maughn has yearly developed superior freshmen squads. Coach Maughn has recently taken over varsity duties for the coming year. Showing the usual hustle and snap, Maughn's Freshmen turned in another successful year on the gridiron. Several of the stalwarts will undoubtedly be seeing action on the Aggie varsity squad next year. Athletics Intramurals Utah State’s intramural program, under the supervision of Ray Watters, is one of the finest in the nation. The program is crowded with events throughout the year with a majority of the student body participating in the various leagues. • ''Will oc ndwigi The Sigs and the S.A.E. go up for the pill in the championship B basketball game. Student director of intramurals, Jock Reynolds, Ray Watters, and Boyde Whitby organize the program. All campus wrestling champs line up for a Cheesey. Lambda Delta Sigma racked up a first place, followed by the Sigs and S.A.E.'s. Intramurals Saturday's hero goes across with the winning touchdown to defeat the champs. Sigma Chi, 6-3. This was the first time Delta Phi managed to bring home the trophy. They attribute their success to clean livin'. Ray Watters and his boys check over the scoring procedure used in his excellent program of intramurals. Sigma Kappa and Independents battle in the annual volleyball tourney. These Ladies” carry on a full intramural program with the competition for the cup usually going down to the final event in the spring. Delta Phi's took home the Open House trophy the third straight year, and for keeps this time. Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Chi followed in the Fraternity league. Carbon Club ran away with all honors in the Club league. Open House is an annual, gay little event, with Queens, contests, and races of all sizes and description. Points are totaled throughout the evening and a trophy is presontod to the winning fraternity. Open House Queen Beverly Jeffs, Queen, is shown with her attendants, Sarah Lu Lewis and Irene Lagos. Lovely Beverly Jeffs, junior from Ogden, Utah, was crowned queen of the 22nd annual Open House. Bcv, in addition to her queenly poise, is currently president of Kappa Delta and is very active in campus activities. The dance contest is part of the Women’s Intramural program. It represents thousands of woman hours of preparation and costuming. The competition for the covotod traveling trophy and intramural points is very close. Dance contest is by far the highlight of the Intramural Program as well as being outstanding entertainment. J Cheerleaders Lending steam and excitement to the games was our chore, and by the “thunderous roars created at our extra-exciting games, our leading was a success. Trips with the teams, the thrill of winning, and tons of good times made our cheerleading experience tremendous fun. Our snappy song leaders were Joan Eliason, Larae Larsen, Barbara Jeffries, and Janice Johnson. Keeping the stands screaming wos our cheer crew, Vada Lee Monson, Newell Jensen, Patti Smith, Janet Shelton, Renee Chilton, and Bruce Thompson. PEMM and WAA The jolly times we hove at Smart Gym are planned and pushed by such activity-loving groups as PEMM, Physical Education majors' club, and WAA, Women's Athletic Association. Intramural sports and the fight for the coveted trophy are highlights of the year at Utah State. PEMM officers are Carol Roe Brown, President; Professor Israel Heaton, Adviser; Professor Lois Downs, Adviser; Colleen Tullis, Secretary; Barbara Tucker, Treasurer; and Larry Wood, Vice President. Sandra Williams, Martha Hoelscher, Peggy Lewis, Janet Walters, Jean Hoelscher, and Professor Lois Downs directed WAA activities. 154 Reverend Alvin Lafon, Dean Ellvert Himes, Dr. W. W.
