OF TRUSTEES With the passing of Dr. M. J. Macfarlane late this year, the Board of Trustees and the College lost a truly great man. Recognized as one of the top-ranking surgeons and physicians in the West, he was content, in the face of attractive offers, to remain among the people he loved and served so well. As an educator, banker, doctor, businessman, and friend to all. Dr. Macfarlane truly gave his life in service to his fellow men. 23

THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE The task of every individual and of every institution is to develop that distinction of spirit which we immediately recognize in people and institutions of groat worth. This is not a quality of intellect alone, although good mental quality must bo part of it: it is not in external appearanco or even in manners, however revealing good manners usually are of inward grace: it is not in accumulated learning because this is often poorly digested. It is something that has to do with the mind and the spirit of man. and makes brothers of the humblest and the most distinguished. This inward grace, whatever it is shines out from all men and institutions that are truly great. I would rather have this quality in our campus life than, without it, Duke’s endowment or Harvard’s faculty. To be known as a place of fine and gracious thinking, of good manners, of poise and restraint, free from the loudness and the commonness which make up so much of life, particularly modern life, to sense the majesty and to some extent the significance of the revolving heavens above us and of the good earth, to be oble to see in the most lowly of men some spark of the divine, to appreciate more and envy less, to love more than to hate while capoble of both, to remain true to the great covenants of our race in the possession of that unconquerable faith which has created all that is good in our civilization—along these paths only can we move toward greatness.
