Ilis humor punctuates his classes, anti purges them of sentimentality. He will read Hamlet's soliloquy one minute anti make a face like an old lion the next. Ilis learning is not wholly of the intellect; it is partly of the heart, lie educates more than the memory: his teaching is to the emotions. And though at times his classes are. as one student wrote by accident, courses in literary interruptions. it is probable that the interruptions mean as much to us as docs the literature. School of Cducalion I remember hearing Dean Jacobsen address a group of young graduates a few years ago. I cannot rcmeini cr what he said, but I do remember how he said it. He talked to those students wisely, directly, and simply. He was friendly, and he spoke as if he had confidence in them. These qualities. I think, are innate in Deuti Jacobsen. Wisdom, directness, and simplicity of manner till these are his. Above all. he has friendliness masked a little by dignity. but warm nevertheless. He likes people: he wants to help them—he believes in them. 31
