A greater gift I could not give to man. And when I sent My Son on earth, He was not hard to please. No, Hn was not hard to please-either about food, or lodging, or state in life, or about anything-except His Mother. But about Her, He was exacting. He wanted His Mothzzr to be a masterpiecef,-Godinl' ' AND so she was and so is she still. Our own beautiful campus shrine to Our Lady glimpses for us a shadow of that heavenly masterpiece. Leaden feet may drag us to a class we are unprepared for, but always winged feet speed us to the feet of Our Blessed Mother. Kneeling before her shrine, we dedicate our Annual to Our Lady, repeating with our lips and with our hearts, the words of this Marian Year prayer: Receive, O Most Sweet Mother, our humble sup- plications, and above all obtain for us that, one clay, happy with you, we may repeat before your throne that hymn which today is sung on earth around your altars: You are all beautiful, O Mary! You are the glory, you are the joy, you are the honor of our people! Amenf'

Hundreds of thousands of pil- grims have knelt at the feet of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Pius XII. They numbered the rich, the poor, the learned and the ignorant, the saint and the sinner. But diverse as were the groups the pilgrims represented, they had a unifying bond: they sensed the utter other-worldliness of the Vicar of Christ on earth, they felt the attraction of his Christian good- ness. No doubt many sought to probe the secret of the graciousness, the serenity of this kindly man of God, the secret of his other-worldliness. They would follow in his footsteps. They, too, would acquire serenity in an age of tempest and turmoil. The secret? Our Holy Father'1s tender love and devotion to Our Lady. This tender devotion he would have us practice. And so the Marian Year, 1954! In Our Blessed Lady's footsteps he would have us walk, confi- dent of finding in her way of humility and purity and charity uappeasement of our ardent desires and a safe harbor from the tempests which beset us on every side. ape Pima XII
