And when I sent My Son on earth, He was not hard to please. No, Hn was not hard to please-either about food, or lodging, or state in life, or about anything-except His Mother. But about Her, He was exacting. He wanted His Mothzzr to be a masterpiecef,-Godinl' ' AND so she was and so is she still. Our own beautiful campus shrine to Our Lady glimpses for us a shadow of that heavenly masterpiece. Leaden feet may drag us to a class we are unprepared for, but always winged feet speed us to the feet of Our Blessed Mother. Kneeling before her shrine, we dedicate our Annual to Our Lady, repeating with our lips and with our hearts, the words of this Marian Year prayer: Receive, O Most Sweet Mother, our humble sup- plications, and above all obtain for us that, one clay, happy with you, we may repeat before your throne that hymn which today is sung on earth around your altars: You are all beautiful, O Mary! You are the glory, you are the joy, you are the honor of our people! Amenf' 1 Hundreds of thousands of pil- grims have knelt at the feet of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Pius XII. They numbered the rich, the poor, the learned and the ignorant, the saint and the sinner. But diverse as were the groups the pilgrims represented, they had a unifying bond: they sensed the utter other-worldliness of the Vicar of Christ on earth, they felt the attraction of his Christian good- ness. No doubt many sought to probe the secret of the graciousness, the serenity of this kindly man of God, the secret of his other-worldliness. They would follow in his footsteps. They, too, would acquire serenity in an age of tempest and turmoil. The secret? Our Holy Father'1s tender love and devotion to Our Lady. This tender devotion he would have us practice. And so the Marian Year, 1954! In Our Blessed Lady's footsteps he would have us walk, confi- dent of finding in her way of humility and purity and charity uappeasement of our ardent desires and a safe harbor from the tempests which beset us on every side. ape Pima XII . ..Li1ff's of grvuf 'llIl'll all rvntziml us We can lllllkl' our liwx sublizmfg And deparfilzg, Irafzfe l7C'l7il7LI' us Foofprinfs on flu' 36111113 of 1'i11t1f'. . . Longfellow just such incentive is given us by the life of His Excellency, Bishop Emmet M. Walsh. Through his example and teaching he has inspired us to train our- selves to become Catholic leaders. He has motivated us, armed us for Catholic Action. With plans for the enlargement of Ursuline underway, his dream for the expansion of Catholic educational facilities is beginningto be realized. We must make the dream complete. The footprints', are there. We have but to follow them. Bishop Emmet Michael Walsh 0 fi . Q5 V Father Glenn l-loldhrook Principal He's following his father's footstepsf' we hear said of a young man who has chosen to carry on rhe work of his father. He might modify the expression slightly in speaking of Father Holdbrook, for he,s following in his Heavmly Father's foot- stepsf' Truly we have seen the likeness of Christ in him as we have talked and worked with him. We are led to recall how Christ showed not a sign of impatience when the crowds pressed on Him . . . how He had always a kindly word for the poor and the weak . . .of His patience with the sinner and the ignorant . . . of His just anger when His Father's honor was attacked. With the years, the picture becomes more true: a more perfect image of the Master. With the years our appreciation and grati- tude deepen for one who has followed and taught us to follow . . . in Our Father's footsteps. 8 In September, 1950, Father Donald Reagan and we of '54 stepped through the doors of Ursuline High together- Iiather, as assistant principalg we, the faltering freshmen. liven with his two feet firmly planted in the twentieth century Fa- ther began to travel up, up, up! Back in 1950 we rounded another curve. Those four intervening years have piled up hosts of memories: sacred ones - gay ones. In our freshman year we were the lowliest of the lowly, bur the frosh football team went un- beaten and unscored upon. By the fall of '51, we were old pros, gazing unsympathetically on the faltering frosh. The sophomore year held its pleasures along with the now familiar routine. We became a full-fledged member of the varsity team, and that winter che Snow Ball was held. 4 junior year found us sure of our footing. In- stead of creeping cautiously around corners, we stepped forth boldly. Daily Mass was introduced. We ordered graduation rings and attended our first prom. In sports, we tied East for the foot- ball championship. Now we have come to the magical and long- awaited senior year. Witlm each passing month we advance further along the road. A new and broader bend looms near. fi 1' 'fs' N. I 3 Sally Sattler, Carl Kish, -lack Kollar and Joan Mahan plan the senior activity schedule. Stepping up in their roles as leaders of the class, the senior officers worked energetically in activities and organizations. President Carl Kish excelled as an all-'round sports star and as a leader in the Catholic Exponent campaign. Another Catholic Action Worker was Sally Sattler, vice-president. Sally divided her extra-curricular time between Altar committee and Glee club activities. Jack Kollar, treasurer, also rose high as an athlete. His flashing feet starred in track, basketball, and football for his entire four years. In Campus club activities, his brawn was put to a very practical use. Secretary Joan Mahan, has served her class as an officer for two years and has been a devoted Altar committee worker and Mission club member. They have quickly grasped the tempo of things here and have made a good showing in all their undertakings. The up and coming sophomores hopefully and anxiously tread the path leading to the realm of upperclassmen. By participation in sports and other activities, they have proved that they are worthy members of Ursuline. 'iZSfi?ffg'33f55f T 5 Lf' Guiding the junior class to the final step toward the goal were their officers. The cooperation of the class with these officers made possible the memorable junior-senior prom, the Catholic Ex- ponent victory and a fine class spirit. The senior class leaves its Alma Mater confident that the true Irish spirit will be carried on by the class of ,55. The seniors ask but one favor of the under- classmen-that they water the shamrocks and feed the leprechauns daily. ,Q-atv .. n w ' AL Q '- .. Sports Writers, Chuck Spencer, Bill Metz- ler, Tom Hagan and Phil Conley consult with Editor John Nierlich on page plans and copy. Each year the doings of Ursuline students are rec- orded in picture and story for us to treasure in time to come. This year, with the theme feet',, the staff has tried to retrace the footsteps of the class of '54, each foot- step a step forward in our education of the whole mann body, mind and soul. We have used Lil' Abner as a symbol of victory in our book, for he seems to typify the spirit of Ursu- line. His appearance with his tiger on the bulletin board has always announced an Ursuline victory. The Ursulinian is a picture of the path you have trod during your four years here. It has been the pleasure of the staff to prepare this book for you. rs' ' ,ag Esther Naberezny, staff artist, brought Lil' Abner to life in the ,54 annual. One of the main ways This rapidly stepping world of ours presses the need for to attain this is through participation in sports. The physical victories which have brought our team close to winning the city championship have developed, not only physical prowess but spiritual stamina and intellectual ability as well. Adapting the set rules of the athletic world to the moral standards of life's game, we find that there have been many parallels. The ability to Work with othersg determination to succeed and persevere: the acceptance of failure when it comes . . . these have been the life-lessons we have taken from sports. 4.4 X g. ig Un the gridiron, the feet of our boys trampled over such worthy opponents as East, Chaney, North and Wil- son. The Irish tallied in the second and final periods for its margin. Ed Voytko and P. -I. Moore scored the touch- downs. ' 1 , , EN 1 Ursuline 20 - East 6 Ursuline's gridiron opportunis s, keyed to concert pitch, struck with lightning-like speed to burst the bubble of East invincibility. Ag- gressive Pat Moore, deceptive Dave Kimmel, and alert Larry Scheetz provided the scoring for the Irish eleven. Ursuline 19 - Steubenville 0 Ursuline scored early in the game when Ed Voytko scored from the 15 yard line. Kimmel scored twiceg once from the 13 and once on a 26 yard aerial. The defense fea- tured again and Steubenville never seriously threatened. Ursuline 13 - Campbell 13 Ursuline rallied in the closing minutes to take a 13-7 lead over Campbell Memorial, but the Red Devils from Memorial came back to score with only 50 seconds remaining as the teams battled to a 13-13 tie before 3,500 fans. Co-captain Ed Voytko scored the two Irish touchdowns and Carmen Pomponio blocked Tirpak's try for the extra point. . N Q I sit' xx ,Z K 1 -, , . - '-4, 5. Ursuline 19 - Chaney 0 The opening game for the Fighting Irish was an overwhelming success. Bob Finnerty tallied the first Irish marker. Dandy Dave Kimmel was at his best, scoring once and gaining 140 yards rushingg John .Iubak ac- counted for the other T. D. Ursuline 14 - North 6 I-Ialfback Carmen Pomponio personally ac- counted for all the Irish point output, while Ed Voytko was chief ground gainer with 106 yards. J. Scheetz had 27. Un line plays, North's Carter and Arnett found Ursuline's forward wall rock ribbed. Ursuline 7 - Rayen 13 Voytko was the chief ground threat for Ursuline with 50 yards in 11 tries. Dave Kimmel was in action on punt returns and was used sparingly in the final minutes due to an injured knee. Finnerty accounted for the Irish touchdown with only one minute to go in the first half. Ursuline 21 - Alliance 19 This was one of the best games Ursuline ever played. Twice coming from behind they pulled this game out of the fire. Kimmel scored two times to feature for the Irish while Rujay jones was the Aviators' threat. Carmen Pomponio kicked all three extra points with his Golden Toef' Ursuline 7 - South 28 Despite two early South T. D.'s, Ursuline was very much in the game until Bill Rouse intercepted a Masi to Kimmel pass and scam- pered 92 yards to put South ahead 21 to 7. Ed Voytko contributed his usual ground gaining, but it wasn't enough as South won the bitterly fought game and the City Cham- pionship 28 to 7 before 12,000 fans at South High. Ursuline 6 - Wilson 0 This game, played at Rayen Stadium, Was mostly a game to see which team could get going through wind and snow. After a score- less first half in which neither team did much moving, the Irish came back with Dave Kimmel scoring in the second half to win. The 1953 football season was fairly successful for the Irish freshmen. They completed the season with four victories and two defeats. With this record, it looks as if the students will be cheering a championship team in the next few years. Seniors of 1954, who themselves followed a championship team, know that the freshmen with a beginning record so impressive will probably follow in their footsteps.
