In the years we have spent here under her loving protection, many beautiful things have happened to us . . . many things we want to remember always. p WVe have tried, in the 1952 U'7'51ll1:7lilL1?,V, to bring to mind some of these things . . . but one cannot always recapture memories in a picture . . . or in picturesque words. The memories are in the minds and hearts of us who lived those blessed days. VVe added to our storehouse of treasured memories . . . day by day . . . year by year . . . precious memories . . . the good times . . . the solemn times . . .A Mary made them beautiful . . . she made them good . . . and because of her we will keep them in our hearts forever. Sometimes we felt discouraged and thought that no one understood. VVe turned 'to her, our Heavenly Mother, and our doubts and fears were soon dispelled. WVe stopped a moment by her shrine . . . it was quiet there and we listened . . . WVe opened our troubled hearts to her . .W . and she made them light again. Through the years we have learned to love our Alma Mater . . . this place where we studied . . . made friends . . . and grew strong in our Faith. V 4 1 ik- .m.,, . - ,I - .. N. - 1 X, , fy -1- . MJMAHQ UI' CBZQQJQI' .S?ll,l0l QIfl'lQ S GUIDE of the souls of all men, the Vicar of Christ on earth has given us fatherly direction in our high school years through his representatives, our teachers: his priests and nuns. Countless thousands who had the happiness of seeing him and speaking with him during the Holy' Year, saw in him the Good Shepherd who takes Christ's place in a truly real manner. Greathearted, wise, merciful, lovable, he won the honest tender affection of people of all classes and creeds. Daily he pleads with us to do all in our power by daily prayer and daily sacrifice to win a 'just and lasting peace. He bids us 'ihonor all men, to have love one for another, to do all that We do in a spirit of constant mutual charity. These are our memories of our Christlike leader, the leader who warns us against the tenets of a pagan world, the leader who fires us with the assurance that Christ has the words of eternal life. ,gsso-MST' ,Q QUT: 'IWW 9 gy B CV ' ' 1 f x N will x I In ,, 3. V A NNI' 'W' His Hnliness, Pups Pills XII His Excellency The Must Heverenll James I-l. McFadden, 5.T.ll., I..L.lJ. NE of the most pleasant memories of our high school life will be the paternal interest of Bishop McFadden. Our devotion to him may well be explained as the reliex of his genuine kindness. His is a great heart. He loves his own, and his own return the love of their dear Father. At our opening Mass . . . Christmas . . .Baccalaureate . . . Graduation . . . Bishop McFadden was there to guarantee pleasant memories for us. His visits, though all too few of late, provide bright spots in our book of memories. He has shown us the way to Catholic living by emphasizing the spiritual and eternal. For this we will always gratefully remem- ber him. l l l. His Excellency The Must Reverend Emmet M. Walsh, Il.ll. UR MEMORIES of His Excellency, Bishop Emmet M. Wfalsh, will be that of an exceptional person, possessed of that all- too-rare combination, a kindly, genial personality and a shrewd, sharp mind. He represents for us Catholic leadership of first rank. As Coadjutor, Bishop Walsh has done amazingly line work, as a glance at the record will prove-work that has won for him immense respect and admiration. His Excellency is particularly interested in the secondary school because he believes that at this all-important level, young men and women can be best molded and trained to take their places as real Catholic leaders, leaders who will help win the world for Christ. Copyrighted by O. M. Gatschcnc N INTEGRAL PART of our memories of Ursuline will be Father Holdbrook, our tall friendly principal, the priest with the inimitable smile. Those of us who had him in class know him best perhaps. He was always quick with his sharp wit when things tended to become over-serious. 'lAnd what do you think, Miss Blank? he would say. Miss Blank, who usually ranked in the upper tenth, would rise and attempt an opinion. Then Father would smile that inimitable smile and make the point clear. His illustrative cartoons, too, we will long remember . . , when- ever an idea was particularly hard for us to grasp . . . he would draw a picture . . . and then we would understand. At football and basketball games, at school dances and at all activities, we looked for Father's familiar figure. Always friendly, we will perhaps best remember him in our talks with him during the lunch hours. Interested and understanding, he generally had a suggestion for our every problem. Many times, too, he had a difficulty for our every solution. Those were happy hours. They will be among the most cherished memories of Alma Mater. Prinni pal 4 f --- -41- Fallmr Hultlhruuk Father llnaqan A9'alSlilHl Principal RIENDLY, hardworking-and above all, vitally interested in us- this will be our memory of Father Reagan, our assistant principal. From his little corner office in the Arts building, dynamic Father Reagan, an alumnus of Ursuline, directs with a firm hand and con- siderable assurance the full schedule that is his. In his capacity as booster of the cheerleaders, rally director, adviser to the student coun- cil, aid to band-director, Mr. Vitello and dean of boys, Father Reagan works with a spirit of enthusiasm and interest which makes for suc- cessful endeavor. He knows every student by name and has a friendly smile and word of encouragement for each boy and girl. He knows how to put things so that even the greenest freshman will understand them, he wins over the most recalcitrant senior by his power of temperate per- suasion. Father Reagan will long remain for us the symbol of under- standing and encouragement. Qnefdf gaalkg SISTER M. Carmel L L w ' -v .. . . . eniorri HE TIME has come to speak of Commencement . . . June, 1952. The year has rolled past too quickly and we are already busy with the rush and bustle of the end of the school term. It's so hard to leave our Alma Mater. Four years we have worked and struggled and looked forward to graduation day. And now that graduation is so near we wish there were just a little more time. But there are still a few more memories to be gathered be- fore we say our goodbyes. May marks the date for the junior- .Senior Prom which is always the height of the social whirl for us. Those juniors have great ideas up their third-year sleeves, so it should prove a memorable event. ' It's June . . . Baccalaureate . . . the blessing of Holy Mother Church on our departure. And then Commencement itself . . . not the end, but the beginning. The time has come to live well by keeping in mind all we have learned and applying it to our lives. Alma Mater will ever hold a prominent place in our memo- ries, for it was here we learned to live. Yes, Alma Mater, we your loyal sons and daughters will remember you always. jfte aaa 0 I9 2 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Left to right: jo Ann Jackanich, Jo Ann Haggerty, Dick McLaughlin and Bill Smith. T LAST we are on the final rung of our school ladder. Throughout this year we took part in some familiar activities for the last time together. Our athletes, band members, majorettes and cheerleaders enjoyed their last Varsity Hop. Our scholars received their last recognition here on the honor roll. We seniors attended our last Benediction as a class. Four years have slippedthrough our fingers. Fourywonderful, unforgettable years. Reluctantly we leave our teachers and our classmates, but most reluctantly of all, we leave our Alma Mater. Memories . . . take us back to the fall of '48 when we confused freshies trudged across the campus with heads not-too-high but with hearts full of expectation. The thrill of the magic words . . . prom . . . varsity . . . seniors . . . were distant then, but very close now. We went over the top in the Exponent campaign that year, bringing in a total of 399900. Quite a sum for little us! A As sophomores and upperclassmen, we were now. more self-assured and considered ourselves well on the way to supreme sophistication. We finally had our feet on the ground and new freshmen were our humble underlings. Again we were on top in the annual magazine campaign, which goes to show that a good class can't be kept down. This is coming from modest us! As juniors, our class officers, headed by president jack McPhillips, displayed fine organizing ability as they led us in making the junior-senior prom a huge success. In the sport spotlight were football first stringers Jim Ramm and Ed Ochman, and john Steadman and Dan O'Horo who lassoed first string in basketball. The proof of successful us! OLU fo alle.. Cfams S SLOWLY as the strains of a prelude wind their way into the hearts of any audience, the freshmen won their way through the year which is to become each one's exclusive cherished memory. We're proud of our frosh , for without their awe and confusion, no high school would be complete. Struggling through their ratios and proportions, amo, amas, amat and the intricacies of the dangling participle . . . here is truly the green of our colors green and gold . The interlude between the lower classmen and the real upperclassmen is known as the sophomore class. Memorizing theorems, helping Caesar direct his armies, and rivaling even Mark Antony's delivery of Friends, Romans, Countrymenn has kept them busy. A link between the administration and the student body, the student council is made up of senior class officers, four members elected by the students and seven appointed by the faculty. Its pur- pose is to promote leadership, responsibility, initiative and to imbue its members with an appreciation of democracy. ' Under the advisory supervision of the assistant principal, Rever- end Donald Reagan, the council considers, in open session, the sug- gestions and petitions of the students, acts upon them and submits its recommendation to the administrative board for final approval. The 1952 student council sponsored, and supervised, through various committees, the gala Homecoming Festival at Thanksgiving, replete with pep rally, bonhre and parade. The council assisted the annual staff in the securing of ads, helped solve congestion problems at assemblies and initiated student-of-the-month awards. Another unit, the Girls' Ensemble, has performed for various clubs and organizations, wishing top rate entertainment. The band now totals a neat Hfty members. It offers the music student an opportunity for experience and facility in playing publicly for football games, parades and various enter- tainments during the school year. Under the direction of Mr. Orlando Vitello, the band played the snappy, invigorating march of the Alma Mater, boosting the Ursuline spirit at games and rallies. When at the half the band played The Hike Song , it meant something new to sing: Shoulder to shoulder, bearing her banners high, Burn high your fires and swing along for Ursuline Highf' The band has grown large and has done well, and its music has become a part of the everyday life of Ursuline-for fine music helps build fine character. fe fl llfl,l'l'll9 6... Members are kept busy producing plays, learning lines, painting flats, erecting stage settings, collecting properties and other odd jobs. Cheaper by the Dozen or the trials and tribulations of the twelve, was the delightful and amusing portrayal of life in the Gilbreth home. Harry Guy and Dorothy Weaver starred in leading roles with a superb supporting cast of Yolanda Ripoli, Jean Hernan, Theresa Conrecode, Kathleen Reedy, Mary Lou McGovern, Jack Pierson, Dennis Barrett, Ralph Reel, Charles Wollitz, David Slattery, Gilbert Nichols, lyfarjorie Bertrand and William Kane. Curtain time for the 1952 edition of dramatic productions brought us the spectacular Christmas show, the Saint Patrickis Day musical and, as a fitting climax to a great year, the senior play. T IS DOUBTF UL Rudyard Kipling had ever heard of Ursuline High School or the '5l performance of her grid squad when he penned these famous linesg never- theless, they are a perfect tribute. For those who count success only in material gains, the '51 gridiron campaign will always be an-unpleasant memory. When the thoughts of many students wander back to high school days, the '51 football season will undoubtedly be skipped over as quickly as possible and probably with a note of disdain. But those who have the insight and acumen to look beyond the cold percentages of the won and lost columns will recall fond memories of the true spirit of Ursuline, the spirit of '51. 4 v i iz 'I 1 in friumlo . . . or clekaf. . . Coaches, Tom Carey, Nick Johnson and Joe Clark. ' The Big Threen who guide Irish athletic destinies have endeared themselves to faculty and students alike for their wholehearted devo- tion to their task and for their willing coopera- tion in all school functions. Head Coach, Tom Carey, in his five short years at Ursuline has become a popular figure on the campus and throughout the district. He was elected district representative to the Ohio High School Coaches Association, an honor re- served for veteran mentors. Nick Johnson, veteran assistant, has served under four coaches at Ursuline and has become a figure of local and national prominence. Coaches have come and gone at Ursuline, but Nick has remained to instruct and inspire hope- ful young athletes. Able- assistant, joe Clark, is a new face on the coaching staff but a familiar one on the Ursuline scene. A graduate of the class of '44, he starred on the gridiron and hardwood for the Irish,'. Managers Cecil Kimmel, Norman johnson and Dave McGuire are the minutemen who perform the behind-the-scene tasks for the team along with Trainer Tony Zill who is always there with a friendly smile, a snappy anecdote . . . or maybe with the rubbing alcohol and bandages. C Trainer Tony Zill and Managers Nomian Johnson and Dave McGuire. . V 66 LETTEHMEN Inexperience and lack of weight proved the main handicaps to Ursuline's gridiron success this season. Winning one and dropping seven, the Irish fin- ished last in City Series warfare. The season, however, produced twenty-three lettermen. Of this number thirteen were seniors, six were juniors, and four were sophomores. These facts seem to indicate that future Ursuline elevens will be quite strong-strong enough to offer serious competition in City Series football. With Calvin Patterson leading the way, the North- siders walloped their neighbors 27-O. The only Irish scoring chance was lost when Carmen Pomponio fumbled on Rayenis one yard line. CAMPBELL 'l9- URSULINE 6 Fumbles proved to be the deciding factor in the Campbell-Ursuline fray. Ron Sattler scored the lone Irish touchdown on a hand- off from Gene Olsavsky in the fourth period. EAST 25 - URSULINE 0 East scored four quick touchdowns in the Grst half and then coasted to victory as the Careymen were beaten for third straight week. Don Commings put the game on ice when he skirted right end for the first East touchdown. NORTH 6-URSULINE 13 With jim Ramm doing some fancy signal calling, the Irish broke into the win column against North. Jim passed for one touch- down and scored the other as Ursuline upset the Bulldogs. Ned Ochman scored the first touchdown on a fourth down pass from Ramm. Harold Davis and Barney i'Vright led North to its only score late in the fourth period. UI' C0ll,l 6lg2 FLQUQI' LUGUQFQ SOUTH 45-URSULINE 'I4 South just had too much Morgan. The speedy Negro back passed and ran the Irish ragged in the first half. In the second half Ursuline held him and the score down but the first half had been too much. Sattler and Voytko scored for the Irish. CHANEY I3 - URSULINE 0 Mickey Yacko seemed to be the only player who was able to stay on his feet as Chaney beat Ursuline in pouring rain. Yacko scored once and set up one touchdown in the sea of mud. Dave Kimmel unraveled two nice runs but the Irish couldnit make use of them. WILSON 20 - URSULINE 0 With weather conditions exactly opposite from those of the week before Ursuline lost again. Franko and Striechek led Wilson to Victory over the frozen ground. CANTON CENTRAL 20-URSULINE 7 Even though the score doesnlt say so the Irish were in the game up to the final whistle. In the second period Ron Sattler scored to tie up the ballgame. The tie lasted only one period because late in the third quarter Jack Paris put Canton ahead to stay when he scored from the one yard line. After an interception had given Central the ball with 44 seconds to go Ed Hintz scored to sew up the game. 69 Ml AOIQQ5 l'l8U8l MGEQFQCJ. . . These eleven seniors have made their names standouts for their school. 70 It seems only yesterday that these same boys were trying out for freshmen football, and lind- ing it much rougher than the game they played at grade school level. We remember when they would complain and say they were going to quit. But they held on through rough and smooth-hoping that their dream of a berth on the varsity would come true. we Cl,CCel0fQJ A6606 gl'Cl,C2!fl,fg . . . all THHIJUBH HDUBH SEI-15 IIN Then came their sophomore year, the first year they were eligible to compete for varsity. Every night we watched them take their bumps and bruises. We then began to see confidence slowly but surely build itself up in them. The junior year rolled around and again we saw these same boys who had forgotten the word quit, back for more. By this time we could see their great love for the game. Then came the big year. They were seniors. They were still playing to the best of their ability for their Alma Mater. Senior year wasnit spectacular from the win-loss point of view, but the thing that will be remembered long after the statistics are forgotten is that these boys hung up their suits as good sportsmen. 71 W - D -.,.. x Q i , -22211 1 ,- la ' igwff. 5 X 23 Q 53 V - .1 Y xii . ,K K w , , X N A . The weak or strong point of a cage squad often lies in the reserve strength. The Irish,' reserves, although hampered by total inexperience, have shown a determination to win and a desire to improve. Under the guidance of Assistant Coach Joe Clark the aggregation has shown steady improvement with each game. Injured early in the season by the graduation of P. J. Moore and Dave Kimmel to varsity togs, the reserves pulled themselves up by their boot straps and carried on, sparked by the play of juniors Bill Carney, Len Granitto, Don Cannell, and sophomores Butch,' Sheeler, Jerry Scheetz, and Don Schulick. Missing the reliable performers from last year's team the varsity started VARSITY erratically but finished strong. John Steadman and Jim Savko were the only returning lettermen, and aided by players from the 1950-51 reserve and freshman squad, they led a green Irish team to a creditable 9 and ll won and lost record.
