During the four years this dream is fostered by the men and women of peace . . . the Priests and the Nuns who teach us. In addition to the regular high school curricula we have been taught how to live . . . and how to pray. Our teachers have inculcated love and devotion to Our Lady of Fatima -- Patroness of Peace. It is to this great Patroness of Peace that the 1949 Ursulinian is dedicated. This yearbook is a pictorial example of how the dream of peace is fosteredg how it is developed year after year . . until the sqifdent fs sent into the world prepared to fight, work and pray that the dream may become a reality. Where our dream was fostered 1949 URSULINIAN UHSULINE HIGH SEHUUI. YOUNGSTOWN OHIO His Holiness As the Vicar of Christ on earth, Pope Pius XII is most truly the living symbol of Christian peace. Our Holy Father is the source of our dream of peace and to him we turn for guidance and inspiration. In his message consecrating the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, His Holiness has asked us to pray to Our Lady of Fatima, for uShe will intercede, and God will bless His people by granting them peace, the sum total of all benefits. As students we were inspired hy Our Holy FHIIICISS saintly example, as graduates we must look to him for the leadership necessary for the realiza- tion of our dream-true and lasting peace. ME UP PE!-HIE Foremost among the leaders of Catholic youth is His Excellency, Bishop James A. McFadden. Wie know him as a hishop of deep-seated religious fervor. His Excel- lency has stressed the fact that the Church regards us as individual person- alities, that she urges us to form our characters along staunchly Catholic lines. We know him as a true fricncl, intensely interested in all that con- cerns us. Thank you, dear Bishop, for your fine guidance and for devoting so much of your time towards the development of our dream. His Excellency, the Most liCY0l'I'll4l James A. 3il1'F1lIl1l0Il. There they dedicated their youth to the service of God. These three girls were our classmates until June 6. l948, when they left us to become postulants in the Ursuline order. Just six months later, we attended their magnificent clothing ceremony. Proud and happy . . . hut with tears in our eyes . . . we saw our former classmates return to the altar clothed in the habit of our teachers, the Ursuline Nuns. After their two-year noyitiate training . . . a time of prayer, study, conferences. work and play . . . they will pronounce their first vows . . . just as other former Ursuline girls, shown in the accompaning picture, pronounced their holy vows. They, too, will prostrate themselves in the Sanctuary . . . symbolic of their com- plete renunciation. At the convent, living under the same roof with Our Lord, our Novice friends will pause often before the statues of the Sacred Heart and Saint Angela, found- ress of the Ursuline Nuns, to pray that many others will have the grace and the generosity to follow in their footsteps. These are our girls . . . they have not only realized the dream . . . they are an integral part of it. I'e6l.l'l'l 2105 On September 5, alone or in comforting groups they looked at the hulletin hoard . . . each found his own name among a long list of others, some of which were familiar . . . most of which were not. After making timid inquiries as to the direction of the Arts Buildings or the one hundred,s floor they made their way across the unfamiliar campus or down the crowded steps. They were the dreamers . . . this was their first day. The heginning of the dream wasn't easy hut when the first Honor Roll was published, they had found their notch . . . Joe Kish led the school with six A's. Joe wasn't the only Frosh with brain power though, for Carol Shutrump, Joe Vogelherger, Betty Roehford, Seely Beggiani, Maureen Green, and Thomas Lavin l l regularly appeared on the high A list. The Freshmen studied leadership under homeroom representatives Ned Ochman, ,lim Romm. Clara Ann Lyden, Patty Sequella, Jack Carney, and Alice Benedict, who attended open Student Council meetings and represented their class officially. On the talented side Jimmy lVlcCray shone forth as one of the most gifted singers at Ursuline. So gradually the Dreamers got to know Ursuline .... To know each other. Afterwards the bewildered but happy Sisters were escorted to the cafeteria for a banquet. Established . . . one tradition! HIGH SEHUUL EWSHEE In the Ursuline edition of the High School Newsreel of the Air, the student producers took the unseen audience right into the Journalism roo111 and put out an issue of the S'News, radio style. Down at WFMJ the students dedicated the program to high school news- papers all over the city and gave their listeners an idea of the work . . . and the fun, that goes with the editing of a paper. Staff artists Carmela D'Amato and Jeanne Shutrump used up all the ideas and pencils in sight in producing their masterpieces. '4Al1 Or Nothing At All was the theme song of Nancy 0'Neill who sacrificed her fingernails to fill the position of head typist. To husiness manager Dick Barrett and his secretary, Tina Finnerty, came many grey hairs. After a hectic year of money worries, they are seriously thinking of taking the vow of poverty. However, Dick was greatly consoled by the enthusiastic hacking of the advertising staff, Chuck Lehnerd, Laura lgnatoski, Anne Marie Marino, Geneva Vitullo, and Vivian Moore. This was the tempo of the lives of the 'gchosen few until along about Fehruary 25, when someone noticed that no one was pounding the typewriter in 210. There was the editor surrounded hy her staff, quietly munching nerve pills. At last . . . the Annual had gone to press.
