Dear Seniors: Verbum scriptum manet The written word remains, is an old Latin m axim , So my dear students at St. Peter's Ursuline High, your Pastor want s to leave with you through your Year Book, some ideas that he hope s will endure and remain indelibly written and stamped on your mind and heart. There is a movem ent among teen-agers today called Christophers. This word means that each youth must or should be a bearer of Christ's word and work, into government, into the market-place, in education, literature, and entertainment, and later relations. Little is accomplish- e d by complaining, less by knocking, nothing is attained by criticizing. Your number,abouteighty-five, is relatively small. You are a minority. You are s e ve n times as many as the twelve whom Christ picked to es- tablish His Church, all over the world. What can you do then? A whole lot. Letme remindyou: If you want to be a man or woman of strong character, de velop the powers of mind, heart, and soul that God has given to you. To be outwardly forceful, you must be inwardly strong. Live, not by e- motion or expediency, but by principle. Center your life in God. See in the church not a ball and chain, but the Divine Instrument of God, through which He wants to guide, instruct and strengthen you. Cultivate the habit of spiritual exercise,be conscientious about morning and evening prayer, examination of conscience , prayers before and after meals . The repitition of the s e will keep you mindful that you are in God's presence, and will gradually b uild up in you a power that you can acquire in no other way. It is a human we akne s s to avoid obligations and responsibility. A boy who wants to be a good football player knows how to respect authority and live by the rules. Anyone who wants to further what is good and de- cent m ust have more than superficial roots. He should be grounded in the truths of which God alone is the author. No angel comes down from heaven to teach us what to do. God has chosen to delegate partof that authority to others. All true authority of parents, religious, or teachers, civic officials and others in similar positions of authority, has its origin in God. There is nothing new in this. 1900 years ago, St. Paul the Apostle, reminded the Christians in Rome that they should obey the reigning authorities in everything thatwas lawful. Here is the way he put it, Let everyone submit himself to the ruling authori- ties, for there exists no authority not ordained by God. Therefore he who opposes such authority resists the ordinance of God, and they that resist bring comdemnation on themselves. Rom. 13: 1-3 In cooperating with those in authority then, we should see God's Hand in every just direction. Therefore, obey willingly, cheerfully, quickly, and completely. Some day you will expect others to do likewise in regard to your commands. The obedient person will speak of victories and God will bless him. Sincerely yours, Rt. Rev. Martin C. Murphy
