That is a good book which is opened with expectation and closed with profit. Books are the most mannerly of companions, accessible at all times, in all moods, frankly declaring the author's mind, without offence.

Wwhat Is America? God built a continent with glory, and filled it with treasures untold. He bedecked it with soft, rolling prairies, and pillared it with large moun- tains. He studded it with sweetly flowing fountains, and encompassed it with long, winding streams. He graced it with deep shadowed forests, and filled them with song. These treasures would have meant little if myriads of people, the bravest of the races, had not come, each bear- ing a gift and a hope. They had the glow of adventure in their eyes, and the glory of hope in their souls, and out of them was fashioned a nation, blessed with a purpose sublime. They called it AMERICA ! ! -21 as as The Stars in the Flag Each star in our country's Hag stands for a State in the Union. Stars were used to represent the States, because, since the beginning of time, the star has been of lofty inspiration to man. The Three Wise Men followed the Star of the East to Bethlehem. The Morning Star heralds the dawn of day, the Evening Star is the twilight's peaceful calm. It is the Star which guides the mariner safely over tumultuous seas. Stars are symbols of faith, reverence, constancy, strength, and pur- ity. So it was that our forefathers decreed that stars upon a field of blue, like the heavens above, should stand for the States in the first nation on earth dedicated by its founders to the preservation of liberty, freedom, and justice for all. Like the stars above, the stars in our flag stand as sentinels-stead- fast Sentinels of freedom, which man, time, and war shall never dim. The one flag-the great flag-the flag for me and you-Glorified all else beside-the red and white and blue!
