N DEDICATION To Our Teachers who have always shown enthu- siasm for our advancement, Who are Willing to help us at all times that We might understand the difficult problems that come to us each day, who are forgetful of our many misdemeanors, pa- tient When We are slow, kind and gentle, but firm, We the class of 1943 dedicate our yearbook. A 4 if A Q'-vga? 4 wi L That Dear Old Schoolhouse of Ours As one who cons at evening o'er the school days all alone And muses on the faces of schoolmates he has known, So we turn the leaves of fancy at the dawn of parting hours And we see familiar outlines of that old schoolhouse of ours. The hours seemed so fleeting that we spent within its walls, And their memory soon will mingle with the echoes of its halls, And we smile a little sadly as we think of pleasant hours We used to know inside the halls of that old schoolhouse of ours. It's a happy retrospection for the sunny days we spent Are like flowers, picked and withered, leaving only fragrant scent, But to live the old days over is as fragrant, too, as flowers, As we think back on the incidents in that old schoolhouse of ours. Though we leave it now to wander into paths that are untrod, We'l1 often think of it as o'er our tasks we will nod, It sheltered all our knowledge and we love it for its care And we'll ne'er forget that schoolhouse though greying be our hair. In fact, to speak in earnest, it grows dearer with the years A For from its portals oft have gone old and noted seers, And we find as closer comes the time when we shall all depart, Not one of us but feels that building sacred to our heart. We see again the teachers and the rooms where we recited, And the paper for exams that made us so excited That we said we hated school and books and teachers, too, But all the time we knew, of course, that it could not be true. And again, we hear the cheering of the crowds upon the stands, Watching basketball and basketball and listening to the bands, And cheering teams with all their might, and yelling for our school And we forgot the classrooms, their questions and their rules. And we with free abandon enjoyed life while we may And loved the dear old school, her teams, her work, and play, And we were all so happy that when school days now are o'er We wish that it were possible to have as many more. But ah! Our school is ended--commencement's looming near And soon out in the world we'll be away from things so dear. Yet, with faithfulness and energy we may win the highest powers, We'1l ne'er forget our school days nor that old schoolhouse of ours. Tribute to Father Irenaeus Father lrenaeus is our friend in joy and grief. Yes, We shall always treasure the memory of Father lrenaeus, his genial smile, his friend- ship and his sincerity and those hours of religious instruction. How we shall need these instruc- tions in the life into Which We are going! How we shall miss them in years to come Y We shall thank God always for these instructions. Message to the Graduates My Dear Graduates: Class of 1943, you stand upon the crossroads of an eventful future. You stand upon the threshold of great opportunity. War and post war will give you many opportunities to practice brotherly love to a high degree. At all times be an uplift to humanity. It is only when you value ease, wealth, reputation, position, friends, and even life itself less than your obligation to duty that you are prepared for great things in the world. Your preparation is not yet over, and never will be over. Cease to grow and you begin to dwindle. Cease to rise and you meet your decline. Cease to carry others' burdens and you become a burden to others. During the past four years you have been guided, inspired, and lead onward and upward by a splendid group of teachers. They have brought you safely to the end of the high school journey, and placed you in the world's great arena of opportunity, labor and achievement, together with the problems, responsibilities, and difficulties of life. Now you are leav- ing the familiar classrooms and are exchanging them for places and experiences that will test the armour you have been preparing. The world will soon find out the greatness of your soul. Always remember this: The more you pay, the more you get, and the more you will have with which to pay. The greater the conflict, the greater the joy of achiev- ing. The greater the sacrifice and the greater the service, the more resolute you become in carrying out your deep conviction of life. Dear Graduates, you can bring no greater honor to the Ursuline Academy which is about to become your Alma Mater than to devote your lives to the ideals Jesus Christ has taught, thus lifting the weary and burdened as you climb the heights of joy and gladness. You can bring no greater honor to your pastor than to move forward unflinchingly to the work to which God may call you, always willing to pay the price with joy, needing only a free conscience and deep conviction of heart. You can bring no greater honor to your faithful teachers than to be true to Him whom they have tried to ever keep before you. You can bring no greater honor to those dear ones who have labored, toiled and sacri- ficed that you might reach the achievement which is yours today than to devote your lives to the great purpose for which this Ursuline Academy was founded. Your power in the world will not be determined by money, influence, the silver tongue of oratory or position, but by your sterling character to do the right thing under all circumstances, cost what it may. The greatest leader the world has ever known was Jesus Christ. At times it seemed His life would be filled with glamour. But when the great test came, He was deserted even by friends and He stood alone and gave His life as the supreme price. Such was the leadership of our Master. As you go out into the world at the hour of its great need, may you continue to be true followers of Jesus until your highest ideal has been accomplished and the fruit of your labor be blessed and the reward of your life spent in doing good be the Kingdom of God. Choose your goal. Select the foe to vanquish, Be it in the field of brain or brawn, Since victory comes only to the valiant, You dare not falter once your weapon's drawn. Let not ease or interesting adventure Lure you from your chosen path aside, Remember, victory's only for the valiant And you've a prize to win what'er betide. We were on the steps before, Yes, before anyone opened the door. We shall do it never more, Classmates dear. Oh, do you not recall, classmates brave, classmates fond, How we hurried through the hall, where beyond, just beyond Were the rooms where knowledge waited? How We hopped and skipped and skated, So delighted, so elated, Classmates dear. Can you see each teacher's face, classmates fine, classmates mine, As we dignified the place where we shine-now we shine? Heard their whispered, All is well, Here's material, you can tell Where intelligence doth dwell, Classmates dear. Oh, can you vision still, classmates fair, classmates sweet, How we sought our minds to fill, sought to greet and complete Nourishment for our mentality, Put aside each triviality, So made wisdom a reality, Classmates dear. Dost recall how higher and higher, classmates bright, classmates We did each and all aspire to climb up learning's stair? , Nothing could our progress stop, Though 'twere feared our heads would pop, Till today we're at the top, Classmates dear. As we're leaving all behind, classmates dear, can't you see Fortune has been wondrous kind, writing our history? If our friends would like to read We'1l give details, date by date, But the hour perhaps grows late, Classmates dear. A Senior I'8.I'8 Class Prophecy Where is now the merry group That we knew long, long ago, Gathered round our Alma Mater, Full of hope and full of glow? Long we'Ve parted in that June time Of that great commencement day, They have scattered all and wandered, Some who gave our best orations, And were clever in debate, Have become our Congresswomen, And direct affairs of state. Some who wielded pen and pencil, Authors, artists, known to fame, Are a credit to our High School Whence their inspiration came. One a teacher of distinction, One a brilliant tennis star, One a record-breaker chemist, Others famous singers are, One a famous radio singer Moves us all to sobs and tears, One an architect illustrious, Two are clever basketeers. Some there are who turned to drama, And are starring on the stage, Some as playwrights won distinction far away In our brilliant day and age. Some have gone to the convent, Others trained nurses all the day. One One One One One got married to a title, acquired a millionaire, became a social leader, designs such pictures rare, became a great explorer, Another one a great inventor. Where is now that merry party That we knew long, long ago, Gathered round ot r Alma Mater, Full of youthful hope and glow. Hopes have blossomed, Oh, so niccly. In achievements and careers, We are happy as we ponder Looking back across the years. Class Will Know all men by these presents that we, the class of 1943, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do hereby make, publish, and declare this to be our last will and testament hereby revoking any and all prior wills made by us. To our immediate successors, the Juniors: First, we bequeath all the joys of graduation-the presents, honors, and congratulations. Second, we bequeath the loyalty and devotion of this departing class to our beloved school with the understanding that this loyalty and devo- tion shall never be allowed to depart from the school but shall in sub- sequent years be passed on to the successive classes in order that class loyalty to the school shall never be lacking. Third, we bequeath such good will as may be necessary and such enthusiasm as may be required to enable the members of the class to pass all examinations next year so that they may occupy the place of honor on the platform in 1944. To all the other girls we gratefully leave all the relics of bygone yearsg including bashfulness, blunders, hard tasks left undone, giggling spells, when no one can possibly tell what is funny, with the best wishes that they may outgrow these afflictions and become earnest sedate stu- dents as become a graduating class. To every member of our faculty we bequeath, in the spirit of ap- preciation which has long been their due, all the kind expressions of gratitude which through thoughtlessness have remained unsaidg and all the respect which shall grow with the years. We hereby nominate and appoint all the members of the class of 1943 as sole executrices of this will and testament and direct that said executrices be not required to give bond beyond the twinge of their conscience should they lapse in their duty toward their school. In witness whereof We have hereunto subscribed our name and aiiixed our seal this the seventh day of June, 1943, Cumberland, Maryland. Books are the most mannerly of companions, accessible at all times, in all moods, frankly declaring the author's mind, without offence. Wwhat Is America? God built a continent with glory, and filled it with treasures untold. He bedecked it with soft, rolling prairies, and pillared it with large moun- tains. He studded it with sweetly flowing fountains, and encompassed it with long, winding streams. He graced it with deep shadowed forests, and filled them with song. These treasures would have meant little if myriads of people, the bravest of the races, had not come, each bear- ing a gift and a hope. They had the glow of adventure in their eyes, and the glory of hope in their souls, and out of them was fashioned a nation, blessed with a purpose sublime. They called it AMERICA ! ! -21 as as The Stars in the Flag Each star in our country's Hag stands for a State in the Union. Stars were used to represent the States, because, since the beginning of time, the star has been of lofty inspiration to man. The Three Wise Men followed the Star of the East to Bethlehem. The Morning Star heralds the dawn of day, the Evening Star is the twilight's peaceful calm. It is the Star which guides the mariner safely over tumultuous seas. Stars are symbols of faith, reverence, constancy, strength, and pur- ity. So it was that our forefathers decreed that stars upon a field of blue, like the heavens above, should stand for the States in the first nation on earth dedicated by its founders to the preservation of liberty, freedom, and justice for all. Like the stars above, the stars in our flag stand as sentinels-stead- fast Sentinels of freedom, which man, time, and war shall never dim. The greatest gifts of all the earth are those that We may have but for the taking. The glory of the dawn, the rising of the sun, we may enjoy without a price. The beauty of the landscape,-of the woods, the streams, the hills, the plains, and setting sun, are ours but for the look- ing. God gives all these to us, and then renews each day His gifts. We accept them all with little thought of gratitude,-these priceless gifts. But these are things that we must share in common-to each his share, some more, some less, according as his heart or mind responds. Then God does more. He gives to each of us a personal gift, a gift for each alone. He gives to every person of earth-a Mother. What gift of God can compare to this ! What joy, what love, what sweet consoling bliss Is equal to the touch of Mother's hand? There's not enough of gold in all the earth, There's not enough of gems of priceless worth, To equal just the touch of Mother's hand. When at the end, if life be cruel or kind, We pray Thee God somewhere we'll find The sweet caress of Mother's gentle hand. Ursuline Boasts Many Friends But None Truer Than the Members of Ursuline Auxiliary The Ursuline Auxiliary is one of the most active organizations connected with Ursuline Academy. Under the direction of its capable officers, Mrs. Frank Weisenmiller, president, Mrs. Austin Cooke, vice president, Mrs. George Schaaf, treasurer, and Mrs. Paul Stein, secretary, the association has had a very successful year. The Ursuline Auxiliary meets every month to plan and arrange for the various social functions of the school and to raise funds to assist Ursuline Academy. The Auxiliary consists of the Mothers of the students attending Ursuline Academy. The faculty and student body are most grateful to the Auxiliary who so willingly and generously give their time to Ursuline girls. May God bless each and every dear member of the Ursuline Auxiliary for all the many things they have done not only this year but since its organization seven years ago. Mrs. Thomas R.
