When discussing the Ursuline order, one must take a personal approach because each of the sisters is a unique person with unique ideas and talents which are reflected throughout Ursuline Academy. As Sr. Lois Bannon, president of Ursuline, said, “The sisters have created a certain happiness and spiritualness that they combine to form a loving atmosphere.” Even though the sisters are not in daily contact with the students, as they once were in Ursuline’s boarding school days, they remain today a prominent part of the school’s existance. Several teach classes, such as Sr. Damien Flood and Sr. Sue Anne Cole while others work in various other positions; for example, Sr. Virginia Marie Killiam is the registrar, Sr. Helen Carey works in the treasurer’s office, and Sr. Catherine Chandler is prioress in the convent. Those not in direct contact with the school still help to develop its atmosphere through their prayers and devotion. In order to maintain strong communications between the students and sisters, various activities are planned throughout the year. For example, on the Feast of St. Ursula many of the seniors spent an enjoyable afternoon over lunch with the sisters. Another activity was again a luncheon at the convent on the Feast of St. Angela Merici. The afternoon was spent recalling the past and present lives of the sisters and topped off with several games of bingo. This year a live-in weekend with the sisters has also been planned. Ursuline Academy has always been a high school for young women, but without the sisters of the Ursuline order, it would be just another school. ABOVE: Michelle Seeligson tells of Sr. Elizabet Ann’s years at Ursuline teaching theology. The mass served a dual purpose of welcoming the students and faculty back from summer vacations and the induction of the Student Council Officers. The induction of the officers and class representatives was performed by our new principal, Dr. Placke and Student Body President, Jennifer Salmon. After the inductions, Jennifer gave a speech welcoming the students and faculty and encouraging everyone to make this a terrific year. Father Deeves said the homily and the whole school offered prayers for the beginning school year. After mass, we all returned to Ursuline with a warm feeling of unity. 6 Student Life RANGER DAY The annual Homecoming activities began with Ranger Day in Jesuit’s gymnasium. The Jesuit Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleaders lead the students in a spirited pep rally accompanied by the Jesuit-Ursuline Band. The football team received a trophy from KISS 106 for “Team of the Week”. The pep rally was continued in Haggar Stadium with the chariot races, a drillteam performance, and more band and cheerleader entertainment. ‘4 te eg il tox: a sg Oe Suit — ypSulT ° 43,°74. oS Ale Wey G7 1, ESUIT =) 719 psa = oe No ee ,Jesurr JESU, BeeEY, = Bes Student Life 7 HOMECOMING 1986 Homecoming began with the pre-game show at 7:30 p.m. The Jesuit Varsity Football Team gave a great show, defeating the Bishop Lynch Friars 51-0. Half-time marked the presentation of the Homecoming Court Claudia Fonts, Lara Rimes, Heather Glasgow, and Shannon Davis and the crowning of the queen,Karin Marshall. After the game, alumni and students celebrated the festivities with a dance. The entertainment was provided by the up and coming group, “The Nurse”, who played such tunes as “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” and “Guiana Punch”. During a band break, the court was introduced and the ladies shared a waltz with their escorts. Altogether, the events were enjoyed by all who attended. 8 Student Life Student Life 9 VOLLEYBALL SENIORS, for the second consecutive year, captured the intramural games, winning all but one game. Dressed in blue and represented by their theme, “The Senior Zone”, the Seniors had a very unifying and memorable final Volleyball Intramurals at Ursuline. Congratulations Seniors! INTRAMURALS JUNIORS caught everyones eyes at Intramurals this year _ with their theme, “Catch the Wave”. Their skit was amusing and _ they worked harder than ever in ’86. Although no awards were won, the Juniors were the only class to beat the Seniors in a _ game. Well done, class of ’88! VOLLEYBALL SOPHOMORES ruled the Intramurals of 1986 with their theme, “Soph-ari”. Their clever idea won them the Best All- around Theme Award. The class of ’89 also won the Spirit Award for the second year in a row. The Sophs really showed Ursuline their dedication at Intramurals this year. Way to go Sophomores! INTRAMURALS FRESHMEN experienced their first Intramurals at Ursuline this year. Their theme of “Froshstones” displayed the great spirit and creativity of the class. The Freshmen were initiated into Ursuline through their enthusiasm during Intramurals. Great things will come from the class of 1990. SNOWBALL The Seniors kicked off their holiday season with the annual Snowball dance. On December 20, 1986 the Seniors and their dates arrived at the Registry ready to dance the night away to the tunes of Supply and Demand. Later in the evening the court, consisting of Queen Stephanie Staubach and Princesses Becky Drucker, Laura Earls, and Sam Hall, was announced. The fun and excitement of Snowball fullfilled each girls expectations and will become one of the most cherished memories of Senior year. 14 Student Life wo = = el =| i) ac) =] p= io 9) 16 Student | HALLOWEEN DANCE The Senior’s Halloween Dance was attended by people of all grades who showed up to do the “Monster Mash“. The costumes were creative and ranged from “Top Gun” to Raggedy Ann, but the favorite costume of the evening was the jungle look. Prizes were awarded for the best costume. Everyone was “treated” to a fun Halloween. SENIOR CHRISTMAS PLAYS This year’s Senior X-mas Oz play, written by Eileen Henry, was quite entertaining. The play was a medley of fairy tales combining “Alice in Wonderland”, “The Wizard of Oz”,and “Peter Pan.” The lead characters included S. Davis as Dorothy, S. Malone as the Cowardly Lion, E. Louis as the Tin Man, and M. Seeligson as the Scarecrow. Mrs. Flynn’s drama class worked very hard for six weeks on the play. Santa Claus surprised everyone at the end with presents for all. feel aD) Jos) ic ON = ae) CO c D) ie ae S os © o DN = = Zs S2 © ea SENIOR RETREAT This year Senior Retreat was held at Monserrat Retreat house. For the seniors the last retreat was definitely their best. rs T td! j 20 Student Life JUNIOR RETREAT This year Junior Retreat was held at Pine Cove retreat house in Tyler, Texas. On the evening of the Feb. 20, the Senior class hung their murals from their previous years at U.A. and preformed a skit representing their class and its memories. The skit was based on several seniors meeting in a supermarket years from now and reflecting on their various teachers. Later in the evening Jenny Hill was crowned prom queen and she and her date began the dance and was later joined on the dance floor by princesses, Jennifer Salmon, Claudia Fonts, Kyllene Carter, and Ciji Ruud. The dance was officially over at 1:00 and many went out to “Moonlight” until daylight. 28 Student Life 30 Seniors Jennifer Kathleen Salmon Student Body President ’Tis easy enough to be pleasant, When life flows along like a song; But the man worth while is the one who will smile When everything goes dead wrong; For the test of the heart is trouble, And it always comes with the years, But the smile that is worth the praise of the earth Is the smile that comes through tears. To kick off the week of graduation and all of the excite- ment that accompanies it, the seniors joined together for a final prayer service at Ursuline filled with symbols of the past four years. Then everyone drove to Canyon Creek for an afternoon of recreation and relaxation. While the sun did not cooperate until noon, that did not stop the class of ‘87 and their teachers from playing kickball, swimming, and sliding down the giant slide. Soon after the sun came out it was time to reminisce with songs from soph. retreat and a slide show. Love, Dad, Mom, Mike, Mark, Danny BETH GEISLER Dear Jennifer, Only a daughter can bring so many joys which grow deeper and richer through the years. As a little girl, she charms everyone with smiles, giggles and curiosity. Little girl hurts are soothed in the loving arms of her parents. As a daughter grows, she becomes still a greater joy, a special friend to talk to, to rely upon, and to help through good times and bad. Through the years, (especially these last three) she is always a source of great family pride because of her efforts and successes, her thoughtfulness and sharing. Only a daughter is all this and more — only a daughter like you! Love, Mom and Dad CONGRATULATIONS! Megan, KC, Todd, Juli Jenn, I’m so glad I have a big sis. You’re like one of my friends.
