D o b THE ACRES Pulnlisliecl by The Senicnrs QE Merici High Sclqoo I-IARBEN-SPOTTS C0 P znte PQREWQRD As members of the Staff of the 1946 Acres , we have tried to picture school life as we saw it, showing student participation in numerous projects. May you have as much fun in reviewing the year's activ- ities as We had in compiling them. THE ACRES The FICTKS, two words that best illustrate our picturesque school: a more perfectsetting for a real enjoyment of our high-school days could not be had. The prevailing atmosphere is a sense of friendliness that reaches from the heart, a genuine feeling of welcome that enfolds the visitant like the warm enticing breeze that is continuously sailing across the grounds. The life of the school resembles the movement of the stream which Hows with calm serenity, ruH'led only occasionally by insignificant obstacles that are swept away and forgotten. The flowing quality that characterizes the stream, disturbed only occasionally, is comparable to the wide variety of beautiful trees that grace the fields and surrounding land- scape. The almost constant restless motion of thetrees is like a student's own inability to grasp the meaning of life itself. God showered upon us the graces of humanity as a tree sheds its leaves to protect the earth from harsh winds of destruction and preserve its rich bountiful nature. God's grace shields us from the decay of sin and leaves a strengthened will that flourishes as time goes on. The flowers, the trees, the stream are God's blessing on the acres of land that are our school. BERNEDETTE WHITEHEAD '46 Qiifdfl-miilr- MQ-fwfd-ff s OUR SCIIOUI, 'S' ' V W Wrsw 'Xi 45? Father's lectures prov- ed to be both interesting 'and enlightening, and the students were unusually eager to make this retreat a very good one. The topics of Father's lectures were: temptation, death, penance, confession, and everyday problems in social life. Under Father Tynan's excellent guidance, we hope to find courage to carry on through life in Christ's spirit, and pray God help us to be strong Christian women in our war-torn World of today. The dark cloud threatens and passes by, And leaves the moon behind, For it is just a child of God, MY PRAYER O Mother Star of Heaven, O Mother Queen of Seas, I'm here to ask a favor Upon my bended knees. When I go to meet my God On judgment day at last, Please tell Him that I'm sorry For all my wicked past. I am a lowly creature Not knowing what to do But I know a light is shining And has His grace divine. U i That will guide me safe to you NANCY MARTIN, ,49 MARY ANN TRIECE, ,47 V TO BE LOVED There is a heart so simple to be loved just gentle and little and waiting for one A cry in the night the stilled By the look of his eyes which laughter had filled. I cannot tell him the words of my heart The silence is kept like the tomb of crypt If only he spoke just one little line To tell me he loved me and would always be mine. Am I but of stone that I cannot be loved A statue that stands with her arms to the sun The pale moon must shadow the depth of my soul And fade into nothingness beyond the lost World. Must I stand here alone with none by my side Waiting for you as the dawn brings forth light So alone and afraid of the long hour of night. But alas I must wait until that great day When my soul shall be stilled by the calm of your I-ove And that statue that stood neath the moon's yellow light Shall be given a heart, With you as her life. Place: Glen Lakes Country Clubi Let me tell you what happened to me the other day while I was sitting in a lawn chair at Glen Lakes Country Club. Close your eyes, settle back in your chair and try to imagine the things I saw. As I sat resting in my chair, I heard some one giggling, looking around I saw a small child blowing bubbles. This took me back to my high school days when we used to blow bubbles cn the campus. As I was reminiscing, imagine my surprise when I opened my eyes and saw the following sight. As each bubble floated toward me it seemed to contain someone I knew. First I saw a room in a hospital, very quiet, with three familiar figures. VVhy! it was Rosemarie Burger, the famous ice skater. judging from her condition it wasn't a very happy landing. I then noticed Dr. Pat Russell, the famous bone specialist and her talented nurse, Helen Ivy, leaning over Rosie. They assured me she was in no great danger. VVhen this bubble passed a larger one descended. This second seemed to be the great social gathering of the year. Among the crowd I saw Jean Abraham, now Mrs. Van Aster III: the well known globe trotter. VVith her was the at- tractive Betsy Latimer, the debutante of the day. You could see Miss Latimer at any of the social functions. In the corner l spied liettye jane Billingsly who was now the wife of the famous Marine Col.-J. T. NVall. Mrs. VVall had just re- turned from a concert tour of the world. Jodie Bavouset was there too. You have probably read her best seller- Banzai to Maxine . Mme. Betty Lee, the fashion designer of 1956 was sipping tea with her favorite cover girl, Gerry Norton. Gerry's smiling face now appears on all the Vogue magazines. I then saw Mary Ann Mullarkly ind Bernedette Whitehead eagerly listening to the famous African explorer, Mari- lou McLean. She was telling them of heriexperi-ence with the Hubba Hubba Head hunters. Mary Ann was now a hnc dramatic actress and Bernedette one of the nation's leading comedians. Another bubble burst before me and I saw a large red school house. Mrs. jay Bee fthe former Lynn Donnelly was bringing her two blonde daughters to school. From the topic of conversation I gathered that one was a genius, the other rather stupid. Cneed I say which took after her mother?J Then I heard little Olive McGehee calling to one of Mrs. Bee's girls. Trailing behind her was Mrs. McGehee, the former Ruth Currin, who is now one of the prominent women of society and might I add, very attractive? I soon seemed to be gazing into one of the classrooms. The teacher, Bitty Domino, was sitting behind her desk. She wore thick rimmed glasses and her hair was piled high on her head in a top knot. I remembered when she used to wear it that way at school. She was talking to Mrs. Birmingham II, formerly Rita Hunt. It seems that one of Rita's four sons had brought one of his mother's race horses to school and caused a lot of excitement. These boys were quite the problem of the school. Besides Bitty, there were some other Merici girls on the staff. Phyllis Meek and Anne Marie Kerin were the dietitians. Marian Wolfe was the gym teacher. The pupils considered these teachers their favorites, and I naturally understood their choice. Suddenly the door opened and I saw Virginia Schwane standing there. She was talking to some of the children about enrolling in her very exclusive summer camp. As this scene faded from my vision I saw another bubble coming toward me. As it came closer l seemed to see the very famous F.B.I. woman, Sammy Lane Daugherty. She was engaged in deep conversation with Carol Collins concerning the borrowing of two of Carol's blood hounds. Carol now owns one of th-e best equipped and modern ken- nels in the U.S. Miss Daugherty wanted to borrow these dogs to try to find some trace of Mother Joseph Marie who is a missionary in China. It seems that several weeks ago while on her way to a sick child she disappeared. The roads in China are bad, and there are many bandits, so Miss Daugherty planned to take the dogs with her to China to see what could be done. Mother Joseph Marie in her school days was Jo Marie Leverett. The next scene to come before me seemed to be an office-yes, it was an office. At the desk I saw Peggy Johnson who was now the secretary of VVanda Taylor, the well known reporter. Then I saw Wanda coming into the office. She had just interviewed Mrs. Eldrigh fthe former Leona Wooteni who has five healthy boys. I might add that she was the first of our class to marry. Miss Taylor seemed very tired but she still had another interview. this was with Miss Gayle Grant who now is a very famous pilot and has made the world's record of flying. I looked up again and saw the child had stopped blowing bubbles. This was the end of my visions, so I got up, walked to my helicopter and flew home.
