The Museum is housed in the original Alumni Memorial Library, built in 1921. and remembered by the Class of 1989 as the Student Union and home of Zack’s Place. Renovations to the building will result in a professional exhibition and art research facility that retains the grand elegance of the traditional classic-architecture. part of the heritage of Ursinus College While the Class of 1989 witnessed the first glimpse of the potential of the museum program with exhibitions in Fet-terolf House. The uproar over the Aggressive Couple, the mysterious moving Chadwicks and the dust and noise of construction, future generations will have the full benefit of a visual arts program that will enrich their educational experience at Ursinus. The Herman Museum adds to the strength of Ursinus College by providing the opportunity to cultivate understanding and appreciation of the visual arts, past and present, as an integral part of preparing for the challenges of this world. Chris Brennan 117 120 121 100 Years of Sports 1888-1988 1988 marked the centennial year of intercollegiate sports competition at Ursinus College. We celebrated the accomplishments of our student athletes and coaches with a nostalgic look at our past 100 years throughout the Fall. The victories are not measured in the won-lost columns hut in the spirit of teamwork and good sportsmanship both on and off the field. We payed homage to the legacy of individuals who have brought unique recognition to the Ursinus sports program and have encouraged participation on all levels. Ursinus has had its share of glorious victories and agonizing defeats along with many outstanding individual achievements, yet it is the enduring quality of physical challenge and sense of community that ensures the perpetuity of our sports program. A special exhibition was mounted last Fall in recognition of the centennial of sports competition. Memorabilia from the past and present representing teams fielded throughout the years brought hack memories for all......................... 122 I 123 Football Row 1: T. Ix)ve. T. Steele. T. The greatest thanks goes to my staff — Laura Crowell. Michele McFadden, Yvette Davis and Tammie Erb for helping me to turn 208 blank pages into memories. Mike Gilroy of Herff Jones Publishing, Cindy Harris the Ruby advisor, her secretary Sally Rapp and guest advisor Scott Gassier, deserve much credit for guiding this project and handling the finances. 1 would also like to thank Sports Information and the Communications Department for providing us with scores and photos. In addition to these Ruby regulars, I would like to give special thanks to all the people who contributed to the 1989 book. You helped make this book interesting and fun. Credit goes to Sue Irwin for her sketch of the gate, to George Widman for his photo ol the top of Phfaler and to Lisa Trempar-Barnes for her pieces on the Herman Art Center and 100 Years Sports. To Madeline Pitts the Grizzly and other photo contributors thanks so much! To all of those people who were captured on film at unflattering moments and then were included in the yearbook oh, come on, have a sense of humor. We sure did! I hope that you all enjoy your 1989 Ruby. We had fun creating it and are keeping our fingers crossed that there are not too many mistakes. Enjoy the memories!
