Ursinus College 1984 Collegeville Pennsylvania Founder's Day 1983 Distinguished scholars converged on campus on November 5th for a colloquium marking the 400th anniversary of the death of Zacharias Ursinus. Following the Founder's Day convocation the commemoration of Zacharias Ursinus was concluded when a statue of the College's namesake was unveiled outside of Bomberger Hall. We work towards our future, while we play in our youth. vO ■hi 8 11 The Ursinus Homecoming Celebration for 1983 took place on October 22 Homecoming nominees and their escorts were as follows: (clockwise) Representing Alpha Phi Epsilon are John Boyd and Pamela Blodgett, representing Alpha Phi Omega are Scott Scheffler and Lori Andrews, representing Beta Sigma Lambda are Peter Robinson and Katie Freeman, representing Delta Mu Sigma are Hunter Mills and Teresa Lozinger, representing Delta Pi Sigma are Brian Mcllhenney and Carol Krajewski, representing Sigma Rho Lambda are Skip Ferraco and Birgit Klett. and representing Pi Omega Delta are Charles Bove and Nikki Zimmerman who was crowned the 1983 Ursinus Homecoming Queen. 12 13 14 15 ys WITH THE FINEST 16 17 19 20 21 “A Man Not Soon Forgotten.” trumpeted The Ursinus Weekly when, in the Fall of 1970 Dr. Donald Lawrence Helfferich retired as President of Ursinus College. It might seem possible to members of the Class of 1984 that they have not truly encountered the late Chancellor, but his Ursinus profile is more imposing than a Mt. Rushmore carving. Every time you attended a class, sat to dinner, visited a dormitory, watched a sporting event, negotiated a scholarship, shared a forum, trafficked at the Dean’s Office, sobbed through a CMP course - you encountered an Helfferichian legacy. He bought, bartered, bulldozed, built and otherwise conducted his works of campus construction and curricular change in ways no longer very possible to the individual leader. Graduated in 1920. he returned as member of the Board of Directors by 1927, became Vice President in 1936 and President in 1958. In 1970 he was named the college’s first Chancellor. Dr. Helfferich’s list of credits is as long as his colorful, creative life. The credits are posted elsewhere. Let the RUBY show that during the senior season of the Class of 1984, two campus legends seem to have toppled to the winds of change. The gnarled, concrete-rodded end zone tree may live on — less visibly for awhile — through its cuttings. Dr. Helfferich will continue very visibly. It is easy to paraphrase Suetonius’s claim for Augustus Caesar: “He so improved Ursinus College that he justly boasted that he found it deeply in debt and left it highly endowed.” The history of Ursinus College is richly enhanced by this man of uncommon energies, wisdom, and loyalty. Led by Gavin Lentz, the young team outshone all time rivals. Franklin and Marshall which resulted in an U.C. over F M victory which hadn't occurred since 1965. The strong Ursinus defense held off the F M defense to make this victory the peak of the season. The Bears also pounced on league champions. Muhlenberg, and defeated them 17-9. During the season, a record was broken by Billy Scanlon when the ball flew 129 yards to make Ursinus football history. The team finished the season with a record which improved on that of the previous year. Two players were lost but were adequately replaced by a few fast playing freshmen. The team was captained by goalie Margaret Olmedo and midfielder Bernie Powell. Theresa DcVinccnt led the team in total goals and assists with freshmen Heather Palvinsky and Beth Bingaman close to her tail. The records broken included the winningest season, most shutouts, most goals scored in a season, and least goals scored by opponents. The team had the second best overall record in the PA-MD-NJ area and missed getting a NCAA bid by 1 goal. The team did however manage to sieze the ECAC Southern Regional Championship and then traveled to King's Point, NJ where they defeated Salem State and Rochester University to capture the 1st ECAC Championship in the history of Ursmus soccer A major factor contributing to the Bear’s success was the outstanding offense led by Jamie Moyer. The team made fair showings at their invitational meets and completed their season with a 4 2 record, but were unable to finish as well as they previously had hoped. 1983 was not a recruiting year for the Bears. Many upperclassmen were able to develop their skills while others fell victim to injuries. Senior cocaptain Neil Brown was able to take 4th in the MAC Championships and qualify for WCAA Division III Nationals. The season was below expectations as the Bears finished with a record of 8-17. However, there were many bright spots and excellent performances turned in by several players. Sophomore center Jim Collins had an outstanding year and was named to the first team MAC-South. Seniors Thoma and Donahue ended their careers in an Ursinus uniform. Despite their small size, the team, led by Captain Janine Taylor, displayed unity and determination when they surpassed the previous year's record. With only four returning seniors, the team lacked the experience. However, the girls hope to improve their record once again which could result in a winning season. SWIMMING The girl's swimming team achieved a fantastic season. They finished the year with a 10 2 1 season which was the best for the girl’s ever at Ursinus. This year the team was very close-knit. Their spirit and tremendous effort led to their outstanding performance. The girls were captained by Debbie Clough and Meg Early who brought unity to the team and made the six months of toil seem worthwhile at the finish of the season. 1983-84 WOMEN S SWIMMING Ursinus Opponent 39 Dickinson 72 72 Bryn Mawr 67 29 Swarthmore 79 54 Widener 50 72 Lycoming 67 52 Western Maryland 52 63 Elizabethtown 41 76 Glassboro 47 64 Susquehanna 45 54 F M 50 88 York 24 63 Loyola 50 WOMEN'S SWIM TEAM 154 Front Rote: Coach B Sicracki. The 1984 team was small and somewhat inexperienced with only one senior. Captain Julie Strizki. Led by Head Coach Angela Morrison, the team exhibited poise and fine form in all of their competitions. Two gymnists. Strizki and Rosenberg, managed to qualify for the ECAC Gymnastics Championships Division III at Salem State College. In Massachusettes Strizki participated in the all-around and Rosenberg was an alternate for the vaulting.
