They had no tail, but a head at each end, and sharp horns on each head. They were very shy and terribly hard to catch. No matter which way you came towards them, they were always facing you. The Story of Doctor Dolittle Hugh Lofting 21 ■ JJV1S IS 4.X1 (13VJ 26 After having faithfully served the Ursinus community for twenty-three years. Dean Ruth R. Harris retired in 1983. Her association with the college began in 1932 when she entered as a freshman. She received her B.S. from Ursinus in 1936 and pursued her M.A. degree at Columbia University Through the years, she has attended numerous institutions. In 1974. an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree was bestowed upon her by Ursinus College. She also received countless other honors in her career, the most recent being a chair on the Local Arrangements Committee of the Pennsylvania Association of Women Deans in 1978. In her twenty-three years of dedicated service to Ursinus. Dean Harris has involved herself with various activities. She has been a member of the Ursinus Woman's Club Executive Committee since 1959 and has acted as chairman on the following four major committees: Student Activities. Forum and Cultural Affairs. Parents' Day. and Orientation Committees. She has been both a friend and counselor to many students. It is the close contact with the students that Dean Harris cites as the highlight of her career. She enjoyed seeing students in action, participating in diverse activities. She was even more thrilled to follow graduates and be happy for the successes that they have had. The fact that she could witness a young adult's developmental metamorphasis from student to adult gave Dean Harris a great sense of satisfaction. She reflected upon all her years at Ursinus. both as a student and staff member, as having all been very happy ones, due to the people She also attributed her happiness and satisfaction to Ursinus' values and high academic quality and remembered the faculty, staff, and students as being conscientious, hardworking, interesting, and delightful. After contemplating the past twenty-three years. Dean Harris concluded that the major changes on campus were physical and include the construction of Helfreich Hall. Corson Hall. New Men's Dorm, and Ritter Center. As Dean of Students, she also witnessed many changes in the college's rules and regula tions. Indicative of her progressive outlook, she acknowledged the changes and adapted accordingly. She stated that the switch from regulations to freedoms was no problem to accept because students are mature enough to make their own decisions. Looking to the future. Dean Harris wishes Ursinus to continue to maintain academic excellence and attract high quality students. We feel it only fitting that the 1983 Ruby be dedicated to Ruth R. Harris for her twenty-three years of service, friendship, and devotion to Ursinus College. ADMINISTRATION AND STAFF Ruth R. Harris Administrative Dean Of Student Life William E. Coach Brown This year's team believes that more victories v ere achieved this season than the record indicates. The direction and motivation instilled by Coach Brown and his staff have injected new spirit and pride into the program. The team, composed primarily of underclassmen, included Jim Chupein who achieved honors as Ursinus' best punter in years. The team anticipates more promising seasons as Coach Brown's new program begins to take hold. L Belt D V urzbach The Field Hockey team s 1982 season was one of rebuilding. learning, and adjustment; they ended their season with a record of 10-10. Behind the experience of senior co-captains Janine Taylor and Sandy Signorino. the team won some key games, and was unlucky to lose quite a few close ones in overtime. With the loss of six key seniors last year, including the whole forward line, the team found themselves with many talented freshmen and first year varsity players, needing only game experience. The entire team showed much improvement through the season. Freshman Kelee Whitely led the team in scoring. Cindy Flynn played hard and consistent all season, and sophomores Marsha Herb and Teresa DeVin-cent. and junior Nikki Zimmerman consistently improved game by game. The team started out slowly with two quick losses to Trenton State and Rutgers, then came back to win six straight, including William and Mary, before losing to Temple in a double stroke off (2 1). From then on. the season was up and down. They defeated top-ranked Lock Haven State 1-0. but then lost the next five games, and ended their season by winning two out of three of their last games. With this season behind them, and the loss of only two seniors, the team has only good things to look forward to next year. With the return of a very strong, experienced defense including freshman Lauren Johnston, sophomores Sheryl Raithel and Tobi Timko. and juniors Berme Powell and Margaret Olmedo. plus the experienced forward line, it looks to be a promising year for the Bears. The team took second to Haver-ford at the MAC championships and had their dual meet streak broken by Division II powerhouse. West Chester. The team also lost to Millersville. Division II National Champs. Despite these disappointments, there were some bright spots during the season. The team upset a strong Lafayette team and Neil Brown took 2nd at MAC'S. Good recruiting and the leadership of Coach Bob Sieracki '78 are credited with the Aquabears remarkable turnaround. The 400 meter freestyle relay record was broken by Lacey. Brian Dohner. Paul Gallagher, and Jerry Killoran. Captains this year were Joe Rongione. Brian War-render. and Jamie Forlini. This project was truly a collective effort. In an attempt to create a book which represents all students on campus, a diverse spread of participants was needed. I was very fortunate to have a great core-staff who responded to my ideas and gave me many hours of their precious time. Specific thanks goes to: Mike and Barb Guilroy for their advice and support Mr. Broadbent for taking care of all the important business Mike Cash and Andi Detterline for your extra photos and info Mrs. Rischer for all kinds of paperwork Gemma and Davor Studios for the fast, quality service Nan for your ideas, aid. and enthusiasm John for being there in June Neiman for responding to my pressure Anne for sticking with it. and coming up with the money Maria for your grammatical expertise Craiger for taking my abuse and getting ads Sue and Diane for your flawless performances Beth, Brad and the other photographers for 200 pages of pictures Larry for your developing seminar at midnite before my last final The others for your efforts God for giving me the patience, creativity, and courage As with every editor. I attempted to create a new'’ yearbook, contrasting all sides of Ursinus. but maintaining some of The Ruby's traditions. Despite my harried condition before deadlines. I must admit. I enjoyed having the power to control the destiny of the book. We consider this Ruby nothing short of a success. 199
