Throughout the season the top four runners were: Dave Garner, Ron Shaiko. Pat Walker, and Jon Perrotto. Garner capped off the dual meet season with a record shattering performance in front of the Homecoming Day crowd. The season was culminated in November with the MAC Championships. The squad finished third in the MACâS and placed four men in the top twenty: Garner (7th). Shaiko (8th). Walker (13th). and Perrotto (20lh). The following week, the Golden Bears returned with hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championships. However, the harriers fell just short of their goal as they finished sixth out of some forty-three eligible teams. Losing no one to graduation, the team members are optimistic about the 1980 season. Volleyball With the addition of a new coach. Bill Sutherland, and a delayed start in pre-game practice the women's volleyball team had a frustrating beginning. However, those initial losses only made the team realize its potential and the list of victories began to grow. The girl's succeeded in guining a consolation trophy in the Philadelphia Invitational Tournament by defeating Immaculate who had been victorious over Ursinus in an earlier contest. Three days later, the team traveled to Drexel for its last game of the season. It was a previous loss to Drexel that cost the girls the winners bracket in the Philadelphia Tournament. But in a spectacular, hard fought match. Ursinus gave Drexel its only league loss of the season. The two senior co-captains, Lori Armbrust and Kathy Smith, leave the team with an optimistic outlook for an even better season next year. u.c. 0 York OPP. 2 1 Franklin Marshall 2 0 Gettysburg 3 0 Moravian 3 2 Muhlenberg 1 1 Lafayette 2 0 Temple 3 0 Trenton 3 3 Swath more 2 2 Immaculate 3 3 Albright 1 0 Univ. of Penn. 3 Front Row: Betty Morrison. A sense of dedication and purpose was distinctly evident. Team members knew that 1979-80 would be an exceptional season. Enthusiastic fans came out in large numbers as the Bears defeated Widener twice and brought home the MAC Southeast Championship with a victory over Swathmore. As a result, the Bears entered the MAC playoffs for the first time since 1968. In the opening round, Ursinus downed Western Maryland. Despite an overtime loss to Dickinson in the final round of the MACâS, the Bears were selected to compete in the NCAA Mid Atlantic Regional playoffs for the first time in the school's history. Gifford went on to compete in the Nationals where he defeated his first two opponents but. due to a torn shoulder, had to default in the third round. Other top wrestlers were sophomore Steve DeDufour who compiled an excellent first year 12-4 record including eleven pins. Sophomore Dave Viola compiled a 12-3 record and was fifth in the MAGâs.
