Dear Members of the Class of 1971: As one phase of one’s life leads into the next, it is good to pause and reflect upon the meaning of the experience that is ending and to extract its essence. Two centuries ago Benjamin Franklin in his pamphlet Proposals relating to the education of youth in Pennsylvania said something like this: The idea of what is true merit should—be—presented to youth, explained and impressed on their minds, as consisting in an inclination joined with an ability to serve mankind, one's country, friends, and family; which—with the blessing of God—should indeed, be the great aim and end of all learning. Now that classes, grades and their incomprehensibilities have diminished in importance, it would seem that the next important activity in life to develop is service, to one’s self, to others and to Ursinus College throughout your useful life. Reciprocally your Ursinus friends of the Faculty and Administrative Staff stand ready to serve you. You have our best wishes. William S. Pettit President 27

Dedication We may elevate ourselves but we should never reach so high that we would ever forget those who helped us get there. Will Rogers It is out of our endeavor not to forget those who have helped us reach the goal which was established four years ago. that the Class of 1971 dedicates this yearbook to DR. EUGENE HERBERT MILLER. As departmental chairman, professor, and educator. Dr. Miller has been successful in stimulating and motivating many students. In the classroom he has encouraged independence, individuality, initiative, and imagination, all of which are factors necessary to develop one's emotional, social, spiritual as well as intellectual character. And yet Dr. Miller's regard for the learning process is not so great that he fails to recognize the needs of the students as people. He listens to their thoughts and opinions. He respects them and their rights to express and hold such thoughts and opinions. Dr. Miller is a person who is concerned and actively involved with Ursinus College, education, and the students who strive for an education at Ursinus College. We. the Class of 1971, will not forget DR. EUGENE HERBERT MILLER 76
