AND The instrumental music department consists of the concert band, the marching band, the pep band, and small groups. The marching band played during the half-times of football games. The concert band performed at the winter and spring concerts, and at the music festival at Ankeny. During the basketball season, pep bands made up of two different sets of musicans performed. DRAMA The pre-district contest of the Iowa State Speech Association was held at Urbandale. Local contestants entered all events, including a OI18'aCt play. Four speakers emerged as winners in the final state contest at Storm Lake, Placing first were Tom Walker, Carolyn Parker, Gay Ann Parrish and Susan Greene, In the debate contest, our teams met Monroe, U. High of Iowa City, Bettendorf, St. Aquinas, Ft, Madison, Ottumwa, Clinton, Oskaloosa and Newton. The Drama Department wrote and presented a Christmas program with the Music Depart- ment, One-act plays and skits were produced for numerous programs throughout the school year. A state-wide radio contest was entered, and an entry was made in the American Legion original oratory contest. Mrs. Carol Lucchini directed all speech events.

The three groups are: the mixed chorus, the girls' glee club and the boys' glee club. In the State Music Contest, Urbandale's entries came out with the following ratings: DIVISION l--the madrigal group, the A sextette, and vocal soloists Carolyn Parker and Janis Willett.
