wil! f. From THE DES MOINES REGISTER, March 9, 1956 URBANDALE HIGH SETS CAGE MEET PRECEDENT Urbandale High is one victory away from reaching the Class B state basketball tournament, starting at Veterans Memorial Auditorium Wednesday. Urbandale plays Jamaica at AdelSatur- day night in a district final. lt's the only school in the Des Moines area still in tournament competition. The team from the northwest suburb stayed in the running Thursday night with a54-50 over- time victory over Lineville at Chariton. Should Urbandale advance to the state tournament, it will set a school precedent. The 1942 Urbandale team had the best previous record by winningasectionaltourn- ament. SPIRIT COUNTS The formula of success, and that's what it is when an unranked school reaches the district final, is an old one, according to youthful Coach Jim Forsyth, a 1952 Drake graduate. I would say the team's spirit and attitude had more to do with our winning recently than anything else, said Forsyth. We had a so-so record 18-'77 before the sectional tournament started. We started to roll in our last two games of our regular schedule, Then we really went to town when we dumped Slater, 52-47, in the first round of the sectional. Slater is a strong B team. STARTERS AVERAGE 5-95 In these days, the Urbandale cagers would have to be classified as small men. The team height average is 5 feet 912 inches. The Urbandale players prefer to run on offense and that's about their only choice because of their size. The Urbandale basketball fans are re- straining their enthusiasm. But should Urbandale win the district against a good Jamaica team Saturday night, there might be a hot time in the old town afterward. tl
