The biggest money-making project is the publication of the BlueJay Chatter, our high school paper, This year is grew to a five-column paper. As before, the eight editions of this four-page paper came out once a month. Many hours of work went into preparing the paper for publication, selling, advertising, gathering news, writing copy, and preparing a dummy copy. Mrs. Lucchini is the Chatter advisor. ln November thejuniors presented their class play, Heros Just Happen, a three-act comedy directed by Mrs, Lucchini, The cast included '24 members, The newspaper and the class play contributed a nice profit to the class treasury, Another money-making project of the juniors was the handling of the food concessions at the football and basketball games. Next in their busy year came the first Christmas Formal of U.H.S. history, The Snow Flake Fantasy was sponsored by the juniors. The climax of the junior year was the preparing of the Junior-Senior Banquet with the help of the class sponsors, Mrs. Muir, Mrs. Sherer, and Mr, Mariott, Moments to Remember was the theme and the program and decorations were made to carry out this idea, The Banquet was given April 28th at the Hotel Savory, FIRST ROW, Left to Right: Mrs. Eveleth, Harriett Smith, Marilyn Essex, Wanda Cooper, Martha Kersey, Barbara Barton, Janis Foote, SharonBrown, Sandra Merritt, Karen Haines, Jerry Towers, Norman Ritchart, Jerry Little, Mr. Kern. After the sliding they enjoyed eating at Wi11ard's Restaurant, where Bill was pleasantly surprised with an identification bracelet. The money-making project for the sophomores this year was selling homecoming pins. They are looking forward to the projects and activities which will be coming up during their junior year. ,.-E, -an- FIRST ROW, Left to Right: Patty Smith, Linda Richeson, Karole Peterson, Sharon Conrad, Judy Bice, Bonnie Stites, Carol Garwood, SusanGreene, Helen Danehy, SECOND ROW: Mr, Hessenius Mrs. Wilcox, Dick Boatright, John Becker, Lonny Milligan, Carl Bishop, Gary Laverrenz, Dick Foote, Danny Boals, Carle Hall, Mr, Belford. To start off, as usual, the seniors treated the freshmen to their annual initiation. As the year progressed, the freshmen joined in many of the activities, In the Homecoming parade, the class had a float featuring the l959 Queen. For the school carnival, the freshies operated a sponge-throwing booth. The freshman boys were able to take the new industrial arts course this year, and the girls formed a large portion of the girls' glee club. The class had a lot of fun at their sliding and skating parties during the winter months, x 9 ' X W7 ww VP-QSHMAN JUNIOR HIGH GRADE 8 FIRST ROW, Left to Right: Diane Miller, Connie Swanson, Judy Johnson, Jean Valerius, Andrea Yeater, Dixie Peterson, Claudia Hobbs, SECOND ROW: Miss Jensen, Joann Parsons, Douglas Thielke, Gerard Noble, Bob Dietz, Jim Samuels, Glenn Isserstedt, Mary Jane Chase, Linda Kessler. From THE DES MOINES REGISTER, March 9, 1956 URBANDALE HIGH SETS CAGE MEET PRECEDENT Urbandale High is one victory away from reaching the Class B state basketball tournament, starting at Veterans Memorial Auditorium Wednesday. Urbandale plays Jamaica at AdelSatur- day night in a district final. lt's the only school in the Des Moines area still in tournament competition. The team from the northwest suburb stayed in the running Thursday night with a54-50 over- time victory over Lineville at Chariton. Should Urbandale advance to the state tournament, it will set a school precedent. The 1942 Urbandale team had the best previous record by winningasectionaltourn- ament. SPIRIT COUNTS The formula of success, and that's what it is when an unranked school reaches the district final, is an old one, according to youthful Coach Jim Forsyth, a 1952 Drake graduate. I would say the team's spirit and attitude had more to do with our winning recently than anything else, said Forsyth. We had a so-so record 18-'77 before the sectional tournament started. We started to roll in our last two games of our regular schedule, Then we really went to town when we dumped Slater, 52-47, in the first round of the sectional. Slater is a strong B team. STARTERS AVERAGE 5-95 In these days, the Urbandale cagers would have to be classified as small men. The team height average is 5 feet 912 inches. The Urbandale players prefer to run on offense and that's about their only choice because of their size. The Urbandale basketball fans are re- straining their enthusiasm. But should Urbandale win the district against a good Jamaica team Saturday night, there might be a hot time in the old town afterward. tl FIRST ROW: Delores Boggs, Judith Yeater, Janis Bagley. Janice Willett, Gay Ann Parish, Adelle Wilson, Marcene Fickel, Barbara Barton. SECOND ROW: Coach Norval DeWitt, Karen Haines, Marilyn Essex, Susan Greene, Mary Kay Thielke, Carol Dunn, Janice Foote, Martha Kersey, Dorothy DeVries, Sharon Barton, Manager. GIRLS' BASKETBALL The girls' basketball team ended their '55-'56 season with a 12 and 7 record. Among these victories was the Polk County Third Place trophy and Runners-Up trophy in the Sectional Toumament. Prospects for next year should be very bright as the entire squad is returning. The girls doing the most playing are as follows: Juniors: Adelle Wilson, Judy Yeater and Janis Bagley. Sophomores: Marcene Fickle, Janis Willett, Delores Boggs and Barbara Barton. Freshmen: Susan Greene. Bill Little qualified for the state finals in shot-put, as did the 880 yard relay team of Rusk, Newbrough, Visser and Boals. Entering state competition for the first year, Urbandale placed fourth in the high jump, with Tom Alexander's 5' 5 2314 and set a school record in the 880 yard relay.
