Not in Picture: Jack Tingle, JoAnn Brown, Harriet Turner, SPEECH The drama and speech departments competed for the first time in the Iowa State Speech Association. Fields entered included: debate, one act plays, radio speaking, interpretive readings and the three fields of declamation. Eleven from the twelve entries emerged from the pre- liminary contest to the pre-district meet at Pleasantville. Seven were given top honors and advanced to the district at Oskaloosa, From this contest Betty Lamb, Winifred Gaskill, and Dorothy Young won division I ratings, giving them the right to enter the state finals at Waterloo. The debate teams opposed Newton, Oskaloosa, Ottumwa, Pella, and Fairfield in a round-robin series at Newton. Carol Lucchini directed all of the speech activities. 30
