CLASS HISTORY September 1944: 'I'he 56 Special chugs into the station at Urbana with twenty-two wide-eyed young- sters starting on a 12 year excursion trip. Conductor Rager punched the tickets of the following: John Bower, Dan Long, Jim Krom, Tom Willcox, Betty Colclesser, David Gaston, Ralph Thomas, Marsha Hahnert, San- dra Haupert, Patty Rife, Barbara Parson, Sylvia Carver, Kay Eiler, Harvey Hoover, Jim Zimpelman, Joe Ulrey, Norma Jean Hileman, Norman Knee, Bettie Miller, James Clark, June McWhirt and Charles Moore. The train made several stops through the year letting off Joe Ulrey, Ralph Thomas, James Clark, Charles Moore and Bettie Miller, also picking up James Cole and Nancy Baker. Maxine Molessa became conductor when Mrs. Rager decided to get off. Miss Molessa decided to stay with us through the second year. We were delighted to find the only car we would occupy by ourselves during the first six years. New passengers were Karl Hardman, Gary Grey, Eunice and Pat Marshall. The two Marshalls, Norman Knee, Barbara Parson and Nancy Baker left soon. Tom Willcox, Dan long, Norma Jean Hileman, John Bower and Jim Krom decided to await a later train, so we came to the third grade with eleven passengers. Starting our third year we found David Monoe and Larry Eads waiting to hopgon the train. Miss Frantz became conductor. We lost June McWhirt. At a signal we were off to the fourth year. Mrs. Hardman, our conductor, added Wayne Miller, James Clark, Donald and Harold Everest to the passenger list. During the year James Cole and James Clark took their baggage to another train. At fifth year Conductor Griffiths, Peggy Grandstaff, Jim Rosen, Barbara Parson, and Donna Mae Warren boarded. Donna Mae and Wayne Miller disembarked. Mr. Krieg hurried us through the sixth year, slowing only enough to take on Jack Randall and release Donald and Harold Everest. Thrilled at reaching the half-way point, we found ourselves facing seven or eight new teachers as well as a big car. James Haupert, John Eads and Doris Gardner boarded while Peggy Grandstaff left to go to Wa- bash. After rushing through the seventh grade, we made several changes in the personnel of the class. Eugene Carroll, Larry Mast, and Josephine Blevins hopped on, but Josephine, John Eads and Barbara Parson parted company with us. Freshman station disclosed several new faces. John Mullinix, Phil Goebel, Lily Miller, Annette Rada- baugh, Larry Jack, Sylvia Carver, Hilda Jacobsen, and Dorothy Reed had their tickets punched. Later Hilda moved to Wabash. Norman Knee, Virginia Kotterman, and Mae Mann came aboard in the tenth year. Ella Miller and Ellen Smith also entered, but left before the year ended. Larry Jack also left during the year. At Junior junction, Hilda Jacobsen came back to finish the trip with us, and John Ratliff and Norman Rogers also joined. At the midpoint the HONEYMOON EXPRESS roared down the track past us and took Marsha Hahnert with them. Both Lily Miller and John Ratliff said their farewells. Now we come to the end of the 12 year trip with twenty-seven comrades left, It has been a wonderful adventure, full of many exciting times that we will never forget. It is now time for us to achieve our final goal as a class. We are leaving the 56 Specia1 to catch a bus tour for our Senior trip, We, the Seniors of 1956, wish the future graduates of Urbana High School the best of luck always. We also wish to extend our thanks and appreciation to those who have helped us through our 12 years.
