N nv.: ..i,, '... ,M-..,,,,, , I it An education at Urbana High School, as any student will agree, is more than reading through a stztclz of text-books. All of the extra-curricular activities-Sports, both intra- mural and varsityg playsg dan- cesg organizations that cover almost every possible student interestg all offer a wonderful opportunity and a field of ed- ucation as much a part of sec- ondary school learning now- adays as the long hours spent in the classroom, Yes, high school days are a wonderful experience, never to be forgotten, but cherished and remembered throughout life. Yet, as time passes mem- ories do fade, so we have in this book striven to capture and hold for ever the high spots of a school year. As a background for this story we have used the golden days of the '20's, with the hope that it may bring back to our parents and friends fond memories and recollections such as we may have thirty years hence of happy high school days. if l 06 1 INI TRATIONQ This group of civic-minded men and women run the school system of our city. Com mercial Club 4, In athletics also the Seniors excelled, making up almost entirely the first-string-teams in football and basketball. And the whole school was thrilled with six Senior football players and two Seniors on the basketball team were selected for the All -CBL teams. Another quality of which this year's class had ample supply was ingenuity. One had only to watch their various programs throughout the year: the political rallies and the election-day project, their several assemblies, and, of course, Class Day-just to have seen it is evidence. And last, these Seniors best exemplified that quality which characterizes all upperclassmen, but which is for Seniors the crowning quality of all---disdain of all underclassmen. WILLIAM I. Under the direction of Mrs. Lewis Inskeep, this rousing comedy was a great success, both financially and entertainment- wise, and got the Juniors off to a fine start on their year's activities. Starring Christy Park and Jim Fitzgivens, the production concerned the difficulties a teen-age girl gets entangled in when she attempts to organize a teen canteen for her town and keep her boy friend happy at the same time. It was an excellent production and one for future classes to emulate. 5 3- -'ff W 0i V . p 4 CHOIR Pat Howell, Norma Robison, Shirley Bush, Carol Cowden, Carolyn Knull, Betty Walker, Trudy Kelley, Betty Downs, Sue Baker, Barbara Ropp, Marvy Dilts, Mary Pooler, Shirley Squire, Nancy Thomson, Pat Rogers, Mr. Shoup, Betty Brown ing, Carolyn Stickley, Ann Murphy, Lucinda Blair, Cynthia Smith, Patsy Mihaly, Sandra Hegele, Judy Powell, Sara Keeran, Adrienne Hudgings, Rillis Johnson, Mary Ann Crabtree, Janice Heck, Pat Tabern, Ann Poffenberger, Susan Swingle, Marilyn Clark, Miriam Lowry, Bill Jones, Lynn Haught, Gene Knull, Paul Kimmel, Gilbert Cave, Bruce Seifried, Bill David, John Blair, Sue Dilion, Bea Castle, Lois Pfaff, David Dowds, Bob Neer, Chuck Harvey. Football means giving up those last few days of vacation for the players, but every- one seems to feel that it's worth it. It was certainly worth it this year, with one team making the best showing in many a year. The CBL championship was almost in sight until that heart- breaking game with Upper Arlington. However, the team was league runner-up, and we finished the season with an over-all record of eight wins and one loss. Another highlight was the naming of seven of our players to the all CBL team, more than any other school in the league. These boys were Birt, Childers, Harvey, Keim, Lowe, Sanders and Stokes. It was an excellent first year for Coach Tom Watson and company, and of course there's always next year. . . and Arlington. M., . -vt. 1 'sag 3 X. Coach Tom Watson was aided this year by Fred Booze, who every Friday night missed seeing our team play in order to scout the next week's opponent's games. Helping out with the coach- ing was Kenny Gladden, himself an ex-coach and player, and an avid U. H. S. follower. With Seniors Birt, Childers, Cook Howell, Sanders, Stokes, and White playing their last season for Urbana High, it promised to be a very good season--and it was. 'S FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The future teachers association is composed of an energetic group of students who plan to devote their lives to the noble profession of teaching. Under the sponsorship of Miss Thornton, they assist teachers by grading papers and helping with other assorted tasks which give the teachers an extra moment or two of free time. In addition they have an opportunity to try their hand in the class- room teaching classes in the junior high and elementary schools. All these activities are encouraged in the club to promote interest in the teaching profession and to give those interested in teaching a better understanding of what is involved in teaching. Highlight of the social activities in which the club participated during the year was the faculty tea served by the club to the teachers of the high school on February 13. Future teacher officers are: Adrienne Hudg- ings, President, Patsy Buck, Vice President, Shirley Squire, Secretary, Ann Murphy, Treasurer, and Cynthia Craig, Song Leader and Parliamentarian. LATIN CLUB This club, named The Twentieth-Cen- tury Romans, was organized three years ago to promote interest in the Latin language and the Roman way of life. The event-of-the- year in the club schedule was the annual banquet, planned by consul Doris Robinson, tribune Ray Stewart, scribe Lucinda Blair, and the club sponsor, Miss Kollmeyer. At this Roman -style banquet, held near the end of the school year, all members dress in togas, eat Roman food, and enjoy Roman entertainment. This year they were treated to a match by two gladiators imported from Sicily for the occasion, and also to an in- itiation ofthe new members.
