THE 19 5 9 ROSEMARY Dedication Once in a while you meet someone you just naturally like. You like him not for any special quality, hut just for the kind of person he is. Maybe he’s dedicated; a person never too busy to see that the best possible results come from every project. Maybe he’s understanding; a person to go to in times of worry or trouble. Maybe he’s the kind of jK-rson who doesn’t teach you a subject but teaches you to love it. We think Daniel J. Pcrrino is that kind of person. This year, the class of 1959 proudly dedicates the Rosemary to Mr. Perrino, a friend to everyone who ever knew him. DJP—at work—with music—and people—as usual Foreword The purpose of the 1959 Rosemary is to perpetuate for you fond memories of your classmates, of your teachers, and of the many activities which have given you pleasure. In the years to come it is our hope that when you leaf through this Rosemary, you will live again these memorable high school years. 4 The 959 Rosemary Rosemary 1959 Editor-in-Chicf .... Student Council sent delegates to many meetings and conventions this year, including the district S.C. Convention and the State S.C. Convention in Chicago. Nancy Russell, a sophomore, was elected treasurer at the district convention. For the first time, U.H.S. decided to send a student abroad. After careful screening, four finalists were selected. From these four, Jan St. Clair was chosen to go abroad during the summer. In addition to the ex- pense of sending an Urbana student overseas, there was the expense of bringing another foreign student here, as the student body again elected to do. There were many money-making projects carried out during the year. Dilys Morris and Karen Ball were co-chairmen of the Fund Raising Program. At an all-school auction, the fund netted over $500 from such items as candy made by Mr. Braun, a pizza, 10 dances at the Tigers’ Den, and certificates to get out of detentions. Two volleyball games, one between the senior boys and the faculty men and the other between the senior girls and the faculty women, brought in more money to swell the fund. Other projects were bake sales and the Hard Times dance. Each division page symbolizes a phase of school life. During the year, the “behind-the-scenes” business managers were selling Rose- marys, the ad staff was industriously attacking the local businessmen, and the pho- tographers were busily snapping pictures. The division editors were kept on their toes trying to get each section laid out by the deadline. AD STAFF Row 1: C. Edwards R. Gerhart, B. Coffey, Ad Manager; P. Stillwell, M. White, M. Boggcss. Echo At the beginning of the year many reporters competed for positions on the news and feature staffs. Only 2K were selected. The Echo experimented with new and more modern ideas in layout, features, and writing. They used floating nameplate for the first time. By dropping various low interest short news or filler items, they were able to raise the literary quality of the paper. Serious interviews and a new addition to the sports page, “Stars and Stripes,” were important improvements on the paper. They have also gone after interesting and unusual feature and human interest ideas. The staff may look back at a very successful year. EDITORS SPORTS and MANAGERS J. Tracy, Feature Ed.; S. Future Teachers of America F.T .A., the Future Teachers of America, was one of the more active clubs at U.H.S. If you think you might wish to become a teacher, the F. I .A., under the sponsorship of Miss Marie Hauer, can probably help you. Excellent speakers addressed the club on various phases of teaching. During the state convention at the U. of I., the girls were in charge of registration. In the spring, all the senior members became cadet teach- ers for six weeks. All observed the grade that they hoped to someday teach, while some did actual teaching. Later they gave a tea for the teachers that they did cadet teaching under. During Illinois F.T.A. Week, apples were given to the teachers, and there was a display in the Citizens Building and Loan Company. OFFICERS I.imla Nolen. Football Urbana’s 1959 grid season opened on a tragic note as senior halfback Hob Braun injured the cartilage in his right knee during the opening minutes of the Rantoul game and was out for the rest of the season. Injuries continued to plague the squad as John Hell broke his collar bone during the Bloomington game, Jim Hemphill was hampered by a badly sprained ankle, and Lyman Larson was continually bothered by a painful knee injury. Even though the squad had a losing season, they never gave up. With the capable coaching of Warren Smith and the inspired leadership of co-captains Russ Brown and Jim Hemp- hill, Urbana’s gridiron squad continually displayed the spirit and fighting heart which characterizes the true Urbana Tiger. Bill Ostema and Carl Hovdc were voted co-cap- tains of next year’s squad. However, the record is not a true indication of the season. Urbana played “on again, off again” basketball but still could have compiled a better record with a few more breaks. Mattoon, Schlarman, Springfield, Champaign, and Monticello barely defeated Urbana’s Tigers. In the Springfield game, Urbana went scoreless during the third quarter yet managed to come within eight points of the state champs from Springfield. Urbana’s hopes of retaining their regional crown were crushed as Monticello barely edged the U.H.S. cage squad 52-50. SENIOR CLASS As the senior class of 1959 walks clown the aisle to Pomp ami Circumstance, you can see that they are thinking of their last four years at Urbana High School. Outstanding in their minds is the thought of their own Marianne, the first ex- change student to visit U.H.S. Marianne and the other seniors are probably remem- bering many of the same things. The seniors proved themselves capable orators when class election time came around. For the first time, speeches, instead of skits were put on by parties and independents. The capable officers that were elected handled their responsibilities well. Miss Harris agreed to write music for an Alma Mater if one of the students would supply the words. The seniors contributed their share of lyrics. Everyone appreciated the beautiful prom. Ham Matsuri, given for them by the juniors. Tackling rhetoric words, losing to the faculty in volleyball games, working on the homecoming float, hacking the boys at games, studying on research papers, along with music and parties made this year a memorable one. 104 The 959 Rosemary Loralcc Jean Abbott likeable—jocund ambitious Lori —Rosemary 4; Alpha 1; Lamlxla 2; FTA 1, HUt. 2: Vice Pres. 3, 4: Art Club 4: SK 1; GAA I. 2; Pep Club 2: Office Help I; Sagamore; Alpha Psi Omega. BRAUN Principal You will be remembered as the senior class which provided the leadership for one of Urbana High School’s most productive and wonderful years. As I write this, I recall the innovations and advances in our academic program, successes in music and athletics, an outstanding student council, an unusually g x)d school paper, and a host of other gratifying and pleasing accomplishments. My most poignant memory, however, will l c of a senior class of many poised and capable young people, not overly impressed with themselves, and therefore much more impressive to others. Though good-natured, hard-working, dependable and mature, you also possessed the spark of fun-loving, mischievous youth. Seniors of 1959, I hope that your graduation from Urbana High School will give impetus to further accomplishments and achievements. May you enjoy a long, happy, and worthwhile life. 148 The 7959 Rosemary To the members of the Senior Class of 1959 About the time you were horn, the atomic bomb had not been made. Television was a toy in the laboratory. Penicillin was to l c made available for medical use shortly. The first jet airplane was just taking the air. The following years saw many inven- tions, major and minor wars, anti the world divided into hostile and competing ideological camps. No one can say what the future holds in store for you. However, it is certain to Ik exciting and chal- lenging, and as full of changes as the past has been. It will Ik an interesting period. Cood wishes go with each of you for good health, happiness, and the realization of your highest potential. C. C. LOEW SUPERINTENDENT BOARD OF EDUCATION l)r.
