I V Q1 u ruff 5 .gi 5 . 'A it .Mr In the bright October sunshine Upsala students, alumni and friends await the kick-off of the annual Homecoming football game. At the final gun the score stood - Upsala 28 - Hofstra 7. The most beautiful weekend of the season graced Upsala's biggest and best Homecoming. The gala affair even started a day earlier as Upsalans got into the spirit of the festivities with the pep rally Thursday night. But Friday was not lacking in ac- tivity, as the undergraduates prepared for the big day, the alumni celebrated their Homecoming Eve at the fifth annual Open House at the Suburban. Saturday dawned brisk and bright for the traditional pa- rade. The two Upsala queens, Alice Hyder and Joan Vander- mark, ruled over their domain as their car led the way. The royal musicians, better known as the Upsala Marching Band under the direction of Bob Erickson, followed the queens. Oh's and oh's escaped from the crowd as the ten floats and three cars, portraying historical events, passed before them. After the parade the alum's met behind Kenbrook Hall at the Homecom- ing picnic to find old friends and await the big game. This year the undefeated, once tied, Vikings were out to really make Homecoming 1955 one to be remembered. They spotted Hofstra College seven points in the first quarter and then came from behind to roll over their opponents 28-7. In their victory they showed the speed and stamina that has en- deared this year's football team to the heart of all Upsala and won it many new supporters. The suspense of the first half was rivaled by the suspense of the float competition, as the awarding of the Hollander Trophy drew near. And then came the half and the announce- ment of the winners, and winners there were. The floats were so superior that the iudges awarded placement to five instead of the usual three floats. First place went to the Beta-Sigma and Tau-Rho entries. The Beta-Sigma float portrayed the familiar picture of The Flag Raising at Iwo Jima to perfection. While the Tau-Rho float used a striking Chinese background to present Marco Polo at the Court of Kublah Khan . The Phi Om-APO float held down the second spot with an interpretation of the signing of the Declaration of Independence that included the Declaration and a replica of Independence Hall. The third place position ended in another tie, this be- tween the Chi-God and the Theta-Eta Delt entries. The Chi-God float featured a huge ship rigged with movable oars and sail in which Cleopatra went cruising down the Nile to her Mark Antony. Two realistic railroad engines were the focus of atten- tion on the Theta-Eta Delt float, which pictured the meeting of the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Point, entitled East Meets West . An award for the best aecorated car was again presented this year. First place went to Station WVIK for its depiction of Washington Crossing the Delaware . The Kenbrook Hall entry copped second with its version of the Boston Tea Party . But Homecoming didn't end here. Saturday night saw the introduction of a Homecoming Dance for the undergraduates plus the Alumni Dance. This undergraduate dance sponsored by the Student Council andthe Greek Councils was a welcome addition to Upsala's Homecoming and a fine way to end a perfect weekend.
