Back row: Devlin, O'Connor, Bradley, Boland, DeKasar, Pasqua, Cupit, Col- lins, Andreach, D'Agostino, lnneo, Merola, Schoolbraid, Sloan, Filoramo, McHugh, Goyette, Hooper, Schneidenbach. Front row: Conte, Charette, Wil- son, James, Rubas, Hill, Stevens, Henderson, Baldante, Meningall, Smith Catchouney, Pearson. 1 The final whistle ofthe Tufts game heralded the entrance of the thirtieth year of Upsala football into the record books. The Norsemen finished the season with a record of seven wins, one loss, and one tie. Although the Vikings fell one game short of the dream of an undefeated season, they played a season of football to which every Viking fan can point with pride. The schedule which the Norsemen had set up for them this year was possibly the toughest faced by any Upsala eleven. Head Coach John Hooper and the rest ofthe coaching staff are to be highly commended for a iob well done. Hooper had six! teen returning veterans at the beginning ofthe season, but the loss of Freshman candidates severely limited his squad's strength in numbers as well as talent. During the course ofthe season, in- juries took their toll in all parts of the Viking squad, Bill Holt, one of Upsala's greats, was sidelined most of the year with a shoul- der separation. Don Stevens likewise missed a good deal of ac- tion. Special praise must be given to Richie Meningall for his splendid iob of quarterbacking after Stevens' iniury. In spite of all the deterrents, however, the i955 Vikings were the first team in the history of football at Upsala to win seven games of the nine-game schedule. This year the Norsemen scored l54 points to average l7 plus per game. Their opponents tallied 85 markers for an average of less than 9.5 per contest. The offensive total makes this year's squad the fifth highest scor- ing team in Upsala grid history, and the defensive total reveals that only the i935 Vikings allowed their opponents less than 85 points in a nine-game schedule. In the three years that .lohn Hooper has headed the Viking squad, his charges have won seventeen games while losing nine and tying one. This marks the first time that a Viking squad has compiled a record such as this over a comparable period. In the same period of time, the Norsemen have scored a total of 619 points. In the thirty years of football at Upsala, Viking elevens have tallied a grand total of 2710 points. The Norsemen's failure to score against Tufts marked only the second time in twenty-seven games that the Blue and Gray has failed to register a tally against the opposition. Seven seniors appeared in the Blue and Gray for the last time this year. They are: Bill Holt, Joe DeKasar, Bob Cupit, Ray Merola, Jerry Bradley, Bill Boland, and Harry James. These men have been definitely instrumental in helping the Vikings compile the fine records enioyed over the past few seasons. To say that they will be missed on the gridiron would be an understatement. To single each one out and recall his exploits on the gridiron dur- ing his playing here would be well nigh impossible. In lieu of a tribute to each one of these seniors, let us mere- ly point to the record compiled during the past four years that they have been at Upsala-twenty wins, fifteen losses, and one tie. We doubt seriously that the record could be as good as it is if they had not decided to give their talents to the Viking cause.
