UPSALITE STAFF First row: A. Heller, E. Gullo, J. Downs, D. Carlson, H James. Second row: I. Petrigach, D. Post, G. Osmers, E. Carlson, L. Wilcox, H. Cucozzella, P, Read. 1956 UPSALITE Webster defines yearbook as o book, as of the statistics or facts of a year, published yearly. We, the staff of the i956 Upsalite, have at- tempted to make this book of facts for you to read and in later years, re- member . . . big and little moments to remember. Striving to make the i956 Upsalite as good if not better than the i955 issue, Editor-in-Chief Jane Downs and her staff began work in the fall after a summer of collecting and evaluating many ideas. Reviewing the hectic months they can recall when seniors had to be begged to leave a cup of coffee in the cafeteria to have their picture taken, when somebody forgot to take a picture of the band, and the day when Dave Carlson couldn't find the basketball pictures. But as the deadline drew near, Dot Post, Lydia Wilcox, Irene Petrigash typed with amazing speed, Harry James sold dozens of ads, and Jane, in- evitable pencil behind her ear, lost many hours of sleep. Finally all the pictures were captioned, writeups typed and The Book went to press. If the 1956 Upsalite brings back many memories to you today and when you pick it up in years to come, we, the staff, will feel well rewarded.

The Gazette began its fiftieth year of continuous op- eration in September with a big stat? and big ideas. The statt was headed by Editor-in-Chief Richard Paduch, backed up by Managing Editor Thomas Whitty, Associate Editor Albert Ahlstrom, and Sports Editor Walter Scrivens. The editors changed over to a new type face for all headlines, giving the paper a uniformity it lacked in the past and added a new system for make-up, a perennial headache which has been known to keep busy editors at work until some very wee hours in the morning. All in all, the main idea was to hit the stands with a better looking, more readable paper. Response was good, even among that almost forgotten campus group, the night school. Enlarging the area of cov- erage to include this large segment of campus life, the editors made the paper available to the after-dark arrivals, another Gazette first. Still, life on the third fioor of Viking Hall was pretty much the same. Reporters still kept editors perched on the ledges of windows when important stories didn't arrive on time, and the editors reciprocated by keeping the printer in a constant daze as to just when the copy was going to ar- rive. Yet, by some strange force, probably motivated by Ahlstrom's famous, What's news? Whitty's I'll go along with that, and Paduch's perennial No! the Gazette's faithful readers were each week lwell, nearly each weekj presented with a brand new issue. And, this year, in grati- tude of fifty years of faithful reading by the campus family, the Gazette added a present of its own-an issue of Foci. A 5241: i i , ' ig- x 'Q To many of his staff Editor Dick Paduch lives up to the name on his desk, especially when that deadline approaches. From the smiles on Walt's and Lydia's faces the Gazette must be printing jokes these days. 109
