Larry Day Sec. Sandra Ralph Treas. Lester Johns Reporter Judy Mathews Class History We returned to Harpster in September 1957 as bewildered, but eager Freshmen. We acquired six newmernbers. They were Sharon Sheaffer,ShirleySchrader, Tj.-rus Cram er, Gary Gould, and Eddie Shumate from Wyandot and Lois Beaty from Tennessee. During the year we had one class party at Jeanne Beaschler's home under the supervision of Mrs. Denman, our advisor. In 1958 we trouped back full force with all our former members and one new mem- ber, James Noble. Mrs. Denman was again our class advisor. We saved sales tax stamps to begin funds for our class treasury. We had two class parties, one at Gary Gould's home and one at the school. Our Junior year arrived before we knew it. We had lost two members, Lois Beaty and James Noble. The whole year was a jumble of activity and excitement. Once again our faithful Mrs.Denman was our advisor. We sold refreshments at the ball games, had bake sales, and sold nuts and apple cider as money-making projects. On April 7, 1960 we presented our Junior play OFF THE TRACK under the direction of Mrs. Walton. Later in the spring we honoredthe Seniors with a banquet. Our theme was The Harpster Hi-Hat Supper Club. We not only decorated the gym but the sidewalk and the entrance hall as well. We had waiters, a hat check girl, doorman, and a parking attendant. We also furnished our own entertainment from the varied talents of our class members. Welearned that we would not be permitted to take a class trip when we were Seniors so we dug in and worked fervently to raise money to make the trip in our Junior year. We had scrap and paper drives and we achieved our goal. We ended this fabulous year with a five-day trip to Washington, D. C. Again we thank Mrs. Denman for making this pos- sible. We're Seniors! It seems almost impossible. We all thought it was so far in the future, but suddenly it was no longer future,it wasthe present. We were the first Harpster Seniors under the new Upper Sandusky system. During the year we sold ads and com- pleted our section of the annual. Every six weeks we had a maddening scramble to com- plete our school paper. In the spring we presented our Senior play NO BOYS ALLOWED underthe direction of Mrs. Fowler. On May 28, 1961, our Baccalaureate exercises were held and the next night we had our Commencement exercises. We are now afloat upon the sea of life! A huge crowd was milling around a familiar-looking girl. As the pic- ture grew clearer, I distinguished the face of Mary Ann Sheaffer, who had just won the pole vault event fwomen's divisionl for the United States. Official time keeper for the event was Larry Day, a high ranking member of the Olympic Committee. Lynda Phipps and Jean Maclaren, elementary school teachers in Miami, Florida, have brought their Pee Wee girls' football team to perform at the gathering of in- ternational peoples. This is the first team of its kind to be organized in the world. On the sidelines l see a number of governmental personnel. ln the center of attraction is Mary Ellen Swartz, the first woman president of our country. Inci- dentally she is still a very strong Democrat. Among the representatives to foreign countries l see Ty Cramer, whom Mary has named to the responsible position of Ambassador to Russia. 'Although Ty is one of Mary Ellen's deepest political foes, she was not too party minded in her selections of government employees. Also serving the United States with deep devotion is Eddie Shumate, a Major in the U.S. Air Force. As my eyes journey over the crowd, I see Judy Kay Mathews a brilliant new star from Hollywood. Judy has written, produced, directed, and is now starring in her own adult western entitled MRS. PALADIN. Also present from the entertainment world is Elvis Presley and his devoted secretary, Sandra Ralph. Hovering above the crowd in an electronic cont rolled air car,I see Shi rley Sch- rader. Shirley, a world-famous newspaper woman, is reporting behind the scene activities for the New York Times. There are still many people interested in the natural resources of our wonder- ful country in this space age. Two of the most prominent are Lester Johns and Eugene Egger, owners of the Coon Reserve in northern Ohio. Hunters may visit this reserve each hear for a large fee, and if they wish to improve their hunting techniques they may attend Lester and Gene's school of coon hunting which is con- ducted each summer. Also present is Jim Sheaffer, owner of the worldls largest Columbia Sheep farm. Jim is also serving his native state as governor. Ohio is proud of its huge co-operative dairy farm backed by Gary Gould. Gary's farmis very successful, and he now spends most of his time in Paris, France. where he daily views all the pretty girls. Accompanying Judy from California was Jeanne Beaschler, the favorite com- mercial teacher of the students at Los Angles High School. Another member of our class has entered the educational world. Sharon Sheaffenwhosehusbandis a chem- istry professor at Columbia University, is head dietian at that same institution. Since Sharon has been planning the meals at Columbia, not one student has com- plained of the menu. The future holds many unknown things. Even if these predictions do not come true,I'm sure that all the members of the class of 1961 willbe very happy, success- ful., and contented doing the work of their choice. 42 EISSBS David Brewe r Nancy Clark Barbara Cox Gladys Foreman Louise Foreman Virginia Haner D Bill Luman A . The occasion is the first day of school for twenty eager little children. They are Ronnie Emptage, Beverly Van Atta, Linda Westervelt, Ella McKinniss, Shirley Shifflet, Ann Bell, Marilyn Myles, Janet Kennedy, Kent Buckingham, Tommy Hensel, Johnny Kennedy, Ronnie Parsell, Tommy Uncapher, Harold Van Scoder, Duane Martin, Michial Myles, Wayne Rish, and Larry Hastings. That was just the beginning of many happy school years. Mrs. Hughes welcomed us and helped us, not only through those first diffi- cult days for us, but also through the entire first and second grades. Mrs. Walton and Miss Stalder came next, helping us through the third and fourth grades. The following year Mrs. Heckathorn became our teacher. She guided us through the fifth and sixth grades. During those first six years, many students had come and gone, two of which were to stay with us the remainder of our school days. Jan Shields joinedus in the second grade and Bill Miller in the third. Before we knew it, we found ourselves in junior high school. Everything was so different for us. We had many new things to get accustomed to. Mr. Strahm and Mr. Jordan were our class advisors during those years. We gained two more students in the eighth grade that have stayed with us, Sandy Carothers and Lloyd Swavel. Now came the big moment, high school! The Seniors welcomed us with that unforgettable Freshman initiation. During that year we gained two more stu- dents,Irma Pfleider and John Osborn. Mr. Strahm was our advisor during that year and the following. From our Junior year we have many memories. The two greatest are our play, Let Me Talk and the prom, the theme of which was With a Song in my Heart. Bert Shearer joined our class that year. Now our Senior year has arrived. To our regret, our class was divided, part attending some classes at I-Iarpster and Upper Sandusky. Without doubt, the biggest event of this year will be graduation. Six of the original class mem- bers plus seven that have joined us along the way look forward to this occasion. They are, respectively, Ann Bell, Janet Kennedy, Ronnie Emptage, Kent Buck- ingham,Michial Myles, Johnny Kennedy, Janet Shields, Bill Miller, Sandy Car- others, Lloyd Swavel, Irma Pfleider, John Osborn, and Bert Shearer. We wish to express our gratitude and thanks to Mr.Neiswander for his help and guidance as our class advisor during our Junior and Senior years. One section of our life is now history, but we have another very important part to live, our future. We are all looking forward to this with much hope, faith, and expectation. 68 .E , 1 1 X 515 v WORK? MARRIAGE ? COLLEGE. I K g Class Prophecy Well, here itis 1971 ,ten years since I graduated from dear old Marseilles High School. A few weeks ago, I was wondering how my old classmates were doing, so I wrote a letter to a dear friend, the former Janet Kennedy. She in- formed me that they were all very successful. Kent Buckingham, a successful graduate of Ohio State University, is now president of the Pineapple-Grapefruit Growers of Hawaii. I'll bet -Kent really likes his work. g X pm K4 gb, 1.0 F' Ron Emptage is now the manager of the IGA store in Marseilles. Heis also the proud father of three little red-headed boys. I guess Ron always did like the store. Sandra Carothers is happily settled with her farmer husband and eight children. Sandy's high school dream came true. John Osborn is a high-ranking officer in the US Marines. After all that waiting, he finally joined the Marines. Mike Myles is driving race cars at the Indianapolis 500. Mike always did like to drive fast. Lloyd Swavel is a big-game hunter in Africa. I guess his deer-hunting experiences really paid off. Bert Shearer is a successful businessman. He owns the Shearer Tooth- pick Company in Chicago, Illinois. Bert always was a good businessman, even in high school. Janet Kennedy is a fabulous interior decorator in New York. Her husband is in the Marines and they now have three children. Bill Miller has a large florist shop in Marseilles. I guess Bill is doing very well in this business. Irma Pfleider is a private secretary to her husband, who owns a large company in Chicago. They have four lovely children. Janet Shields has marriedamillionaire from the sunny state of California. She met him at a homecoming game, at which she reigned as queen. John Kennedy is head coach for the Harlem Globetrotters of New York. John always did like basketball, even though it didn't like him. If you're wondering who I am, it's Ann Belle. I'm now a Registered Nurse living in New York City with my husband and two daughters. 69 qt H Y N QP, Through the twelve years of our schooling, we have gained certain rights and privileges which other students do not have. As we are now leaving this school we no longer have any use for these things. However, it would be a shame to just forget them, so, being of sound mind and memory, we do bequeath the following attributes to the following persons: I, Irma Pfleider, will my great typing speed to Wanda Hensel, and my mid- get-like appearance to Jerry Soule. I, Jan Shields, will my broken seat in Lit class to Linda Jacobs. I, Ron Emptage, will my nickname, Red, to Llowell Bear, and my ability to study until 12:00 to Tom Sayre. I,Mike Myles, willmya.bilityto wreck cars to Tom Sayre, who has already had experience in this field. I, Bert Shearer-,will my membership in the Stella Stenos, lan all-girl clubl to any boy who can get away with it. I, Sandra Carothers, will my tight skirts and hair to Mrs. Heilman, and my brilliant speed in shorthand to Linda Jacobs. I, John Osborn, will my Brains to anybody who has a head big enough to handle them. I, Kent Buckingham, will my comb to Eugene Kerns, and my shyness to Larry Hemmerly. I, Lloyd Swavel, will my height to Marianne Pfleider. I, Bill Miller, will my ability to grow whiskers to Tom Sayre. I,-John Kennedy, will my good looks to the coach. I, Janet Kennedy, will my wardrobe to Pat Arnold, and my good grades in world history to Gary Clawson. I, Ann Bell, will my ability to goof off and get away with it to Caroline Emptage and Connie Jacobs, and my shyness to Randy Woods. 70 Bus Drivers Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. E 'xhx w.-'XJ Clinger Barnett James Kennedy Custodian Mr. and Mrs. Norvin Kennedy Cook Mrs. Frances Shertzer Mrs. Oglevee Heilman N. These unphotographed achievements include: your full understanding of and dedication as a citizen to your democracyg and development of a sympathetic understanding of the other human beings who make up our world, a knowledge of their problems, their strides forward and enrichment of your life through art, literature and music. Strengthened moral attitudes, concepts of right, fairness, and justice have also been im- possible to pose for the camera. Your teachers have no pride greater than in knowing these most important of all values exist. have been nurtured during the year and will endure through you. These Gentlemen To the graduates of l96l:. lnaworld of unrest and rapid technological advance, a good education is of the utmost importance. Every student mustbe prepared to meet the challenge of tomorrow. Best wishes to all of you. May your future accomplishments reflect credit on you and your high school. Sincerely, Paul Groth, Principal Direct Our Courses. 127 RUSSELL WO LFE Mr. Wolfe has the difficult task of guiding the men into the fields of their interest and best ability. Celia Harmon, Jill Hendricks, Kathy Herald, Mary Mason, Barb Richardson, and Linda Shuherk. The MacDonald family--Don, QRoger Castanienl Betty, lDiane Pfeiferj Ann, lMarcia Myersl and Joan, CSue Strasserl--was happy until father decided to make his life-long dream of living on a chicken farm come true. The family's next door neighbors are an inquisitive woman fBetty Newelll and her pessimistic husband lWayne Dickasonl. The girls are chagrined to learn that there is no telephone, no running water. no bathroom, and, worst of al1,noboys, except Thad, QAI George, who has been claimed by first born. But Ann's adventures with Thad are not easy because there is competition from Corine Uackie Kuenzlil. The chicken is Thad's first choice. Life is complicated by the Lingerie Lady Uudy Hinesl, Don's Indian friend QDwight Gib- sonj, and a skunk. Joanie manages to attract two boyfriends, a lumberjack Uim Evansl and an athlete Uirn Weaverl, but she is in the height of her glory when she discovers that there is to be aboys' camp nearby. She is highly disturbed when the five outdoor girls QCe1ia Harmon, Jill Hendricks, Kathy Herald, Mary Mason, and Barb Richardson, and Milli- cent fLinda Shuherkj arrive to share her boys. The Egg and I ends happily when the outdoor girls leave because of the skunk, and Primrose wins an egg laying contest, thus enabling the family to pay off their debts and make house improvements.
