What started two years ago as a group of boys running around on the cinders after school is now turning into a solid team-. Mr. Merritt was the coach of the first varsity team in 1960 with Mr. Wasson as the held coach. Since then, the cindermen have chopped off a few seconds, jumped a few inches farther, and added a little poise. The 1961 team record was 2 wins and 4 defeats and a fourth place finish in a pentagonal meet. Ray Conaway, valu- able 880 yard record holder, was team captain. Bob Bruschi broke the broad jump and 100 yard dash record, Page Woodbury, the mile, Bill Obenchain, the 220, and Phil Stewart, Tom Long, Bill Obenchain, and Frank Gleve, the 880 relay. 'Nl' E. Let's have a good drive, Jack!! Coach Brown GOLF The record of the Upper St. Clair Golf Team did not show the great improve- ment made in one short yearg the team average dropped twenty strokes per match. We are the only Class MBU school competing against six Class UA schools. Dick VanLeuvan, our first man, was out most of the season with a knee injury- another disadvantage. One bright spot was Jack Phillips, coming in fifteenth in the WPIAL individual competition. Coach Brown said that he is looking hopefully for a better won-lost record in 1962 Ceven though we lost Walter Rossj. The coach is also anticipating the WPIAL eliminations and a possible trip to Penn State. W. Ross, D. VanLeuvan, K. Johnson, T. Speer, B. Kaufman, J. Philips, K. McCown, D. Stewart.
