It was good because we lived it. Our only senior year knew many things: funny things- extraordinary and very, very funny because we were a part of them and we can call them ours, tough things- tough because we were determined to get through them and sometimes tough because we didn't care, personal and lonely things- things we didn't let many people know about, things not planned on the curriculum nor scheduled in our activities. Dick, Beth, Dan, and Harry pose for a family portrait. S yrt k 24 We were athletes and cheerleaders, people who cheer, quiet people, dancers and readers, politicians, anarchists, nuts and wet blankets, artists, intellectuals, and occasionally good students. We were kids and at times were very, very grown-up. We were us. Sometimes we loaned lunch tickets. More often, we borrowed them. Occasionally we paid them back. Sometimes we didnit know what was going on. Usually, it didn't matter. Sometimes we wished we were dead, and once in a while we had a vision of being alive. These things were the substance of our year- - a year extraordinary because it was ours. HOMERCDQM OFFICERS S. CRAIG ALLDREDGE PETER BAGGERMAN JOANNE BATEMAN 1-v 1,g.,e2.fiff1eee3 e Q' raw ,,.. Ellen- 82 INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC Sporting their new black and white uniforms, the band, assisted by the ma- jorettes, entertained football crowds of the ,6l season. Their showmanship came only after plenty of hard work, quanti- ties of school spirit, and, one may sup- pose, a bit of perspiration. The August sun broiled the bermuda-clad music- makers during the pre-school practices. But there were rewards! The Mt. Leb- anon Band Festival, which previously had admitted only AA Bands, asked our band to take part. They participated in another band festival at Norwin High School in Erwin. And for the second year, many of our musicians represented the school in the South Hills Area Band Concert, at Baldwin High School. While at home throughout the year, the band was enjoyed at special assemblies, at the annual concert, and at the 1962 Com- mencement. B. Wallace, J. Stewart, J. Schrecengost, J. Minor, P. FCDOT BALL The football team started off the year with a bang! Compiling the best won-lost record Upper St. Clair has had and winning the Ohio Valley Confer- ence Championship, it showed what hard work and desire could do. Much of the success must be at- tributed to the devoted coaching staff, which put in many long, hard hours. The team was a powerful offensive machine which gained 2275 yards and 135 points. The defensive eleven, fighting eight tough ones, held the opposition to 54 points. Bob Bruschi led three outstanding backs with 694 yards, compiled in runs of 90, 80, 73 and 52 yards, and an 80 yard pass run, and 55 points. Fullback Frank Vanzin, pounded through the line for 627 yards and 47 points. Indestructablc half- back Terry Shields, carrying 130 times and gaining 4.5 yards per carry, was the workhorse in the back- iield. Because of Bill Stewart's knee injury during the second game, Dick Boal and Fuzz Stewart filled in as quarterbacks for the remainder of the season. Speaking of the line, Coach Merritt stated: An inexperienced line, through determination, devel- oped into a very respectable seven man front. A very aggressive group which blocked hard all year, it proved itself by the last game to be one worthy of praise. Q Kg- .gn-1 -ig: 'S 7 I.. . fs .4 A 1. The team consisted of seven seniors and five juniors, a com- bination that seemed to click as the Pan- thers pranced through a seven game win- ning streak to stand 4-0 in section play. The Panthers' march was interrupted only by a loss to Etna at the Holliday Tournament. Although the Panthers were never able to regain their former mo- mentum, the team gained revenge by drubbing Etna twice in the remaining play. In the following games, St. Clair lost important contests to Avonworth and Bellevue. Three other defeats left us with a third place in the Ohio Valley Conference and spelled an end to our title hopes. Frank Vanzin turned in 243 points to become the Upper St. Clair high score man, while Bill Zondoralcs 230 points put him in second place. Despite disap- pointments, the team was always in there fighting, whether running, rebounding or shooting. JUNIOR VARSITY T Dillon D Pfunder, B. Ritenour, B. McNaughton, D. During the first three games of the season Cwhile the team was still intactj the squad knocked off Bellevue, Neville, and Quaker Valley, and looked quite sharp. But by the fourth game fireballer Terry Shields was out and shortstop Paul Welder was injured. For the rest of the season Coach Argiro shifted the lineup around, trying to make a section winning team, but was unable to find a pitcher to take Terry's place. By the end of the season, however, some inexperienced players be- gan to play ball. The batting honors were taken by Frank Vanzin, who knocked the ball at a .407 clip. He was closely hounded by Paul Welder, who hit .400, and catcher Bill Zondorak, who hit .378. Bill Stewart, with .323, and Dave Welder, with .300, also did well. Dick Nolan, the team's MVP, did most of the pitching chores and compiled a 4-2 won-lost record. Zon- dorak also had a hot bat, getting 14 hits and 11 RB1ls. Coach Brown GOLF The record of the Upper St. Clair Golf Team did not show the great improve- ment made in one short yearg the team average dropped twenty strokes per match. We are the only Class MBU school competing against six Class UA schools. Dick VanLeuvan, our first man, was out most of the season with a knee injury- another disadvantage. One bright spot was Jack Phillips, coming in fifteenth in the WPIAL individual competition. Coach Brown said that he is looking hopefully for a better won-lost record in 1962 Ceven though we lost Walter Rossj. The coach is also anticipating the WPIAL eliminations and a possible trip to Penn State. W. Ross, D. VanLeuvan, K. Johnson, T. Speer, B. Kaufman, J. Philips, K. McCown, D. Stewart. TRACK Raw I: R. What started two years ago as a group of boys running around on the cinders after school is now turning into a solid team-. Mr. Merritt was the coach of the first varsity team in 1960 with Mr. Wasson as the held coach. Since then, the cindermen have chopped off a few seconds, jumped a few inches farther, and added a little poise. The 1961 team record was 2 wins and 4 defeats and a fourth place finish in a pentagonal meet. Ray Conaway, valu- able 880 yard record holder, was team captain. Bob Bruschi broke the broad jump and 100 yard dash record, Page Woodbury, the mile, Bill Obenchain, the 220, and Phil Stewart, Tom Long, Bill Obenchain, and Frank Gleve, the 880 relay. 'Nl' E.
