C. A. Roth Principal YEARBOOK MESSAGE 1967 The theme which you have chosen for your yearbook, A Look At Ourselves , a self- evaluation, is in itself unique, The goal of helping each individual achieve his unique character is one of giant propor- tions. The complex and interrelated world with its social, economic, political, religious, and idealogical conflicts seems to raise insurmountable barriers to achievement of this goal, However, from history we learn that the more complex life becomes, the greater is the need for independence and individuality, Since it is the schools which must largely assume responsibility for preserving and developing the special talent and character of each individual, it is hoped that the years spent at Upper Perkiomen will reflect an image of pride as you take a look at yourself. Best wishes! C. A. Roth Principal 18

Dr, Donald Thompson Superintendent of Schools To the Class of 1967: Do not pray for easy lives, Pray to be stronger men! Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for powers equal to your tasks. Phillips Brooks This year of Our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and sixty seven, your graduation year, presents to you a world in turmoil: on the one hand, the threat of racial suicide by lethal storms of intercontinental missiles, bitter cold war sporadically breaking out into small hot wars, and conflict between the ideologies of free men and slaveryg on the other hand, the thrilling horizons of elimination of disease and suffering, of the end through automation of man's centuries of drudgery, of man's exploration of the unknowns of outer space, and of peace among men through an effective United Nations. These are times to make the faint-hearted quail, or to challenge the stout-hearted to greater heights of achievement. I recommend to you the philosophy of Brooks. I, with confidence, believe that you will meet these great challenges of 1967 in a far better way than has my generation met its challenges. Good luck. Come back to visit your friends at Upper Perkiomen, Donald C. Thompson, Superintendent 17

Warren C, Schlegel Assistant Principal YEARBOOK MESSAGE Many years ago Robert Burns expressed the fervent wish that some Power give us the gift of being able to see ourselves as others see us. An essential ingredient of such a Iook at ourselves is an understanding of ourselves and our motives. All the educational efforts here at Upper Perkiomen have been directed toward providing you with this knowledge of yourself and your relationship to other people and the world in general. Now you must as- sume more and more responsibility for attaining this inward perception. May the future years provide you with further and deeper understanding. Warren C. Schlegel Assistant Principal 19
