Publiflvem' TAYLOR PUBLISHING CO. Dallas, Texas l l I Dear Subscribers: By this time you have leafed through the fifth volume of the Upper Dublin Mundockian and have noticed that the theme of our yearbook is that of a news- paper. The newspaper records the events of the day and the events that go down in history. In a similar manner the staff has recorded our memories at Upper Dublin on the pages that follow. I hope that these pages and sec- tions help you to relive some happy and sad moments at our Alma Mater. I FOREWORD The staff has worked much like a newspaper staff in telling about sports events, dances, stu- dents, teachers, which are only a few of things reported upon in our book. The yearbook is one way in which to bring back mem- ories, but it also expresses our thanks to all the people who have made it possible for us to par- ticipate in-a free educational pro- gram and to Mr. Wert who has made it possible for us to put so many pages of facts together in so short a time. GRI? 1 ie BILES ' it It is a tradition throughout high schools and colleges in our country to dedicate their yearbooks to a single person, a group of people or to a monument. Upper Dublin is one of these high schools, and it is the graduating class that chooses to whom they wish to bestow this honor. Every yearbook staff is confronted with the question. Who? What? It is difficult to decide because there are so many people who have helped us to reach our first plateau in life, graduation. Our parents, friends, and teachers are all a part of this choice, but we have chosen you because we feel that you have done more for us during our learning years than any group of friends or monument. N Your untiring effort in and out of the classroom to aid us has been appreciated by all in our class. We extend our deepest thanks for your part in our educational and spiritual development. We have had our disagree- ments from time to time, but in the end we always met with a happy medium. Numerous occasions could be recalled when your helping hand was extended to offer suggestions when asked for and needed. We hope that you realize that you will always be recognized as our friendly and helpful right-hand men. So to our advisers, Mrs. Geraldine Biles and Mr. Edward Taddei, we dedicate the 1959 Mundockian. PICTORIAL PAGE 31, 3 ' I The 17 1 meg. H115 at Snenge xs 5,0 e seldom ,Went A -1- ' ..,4 a. X.: n..' You have reached a significant goal in your life, and we hope that you have already set goals out and beyond, which you are going to try and attain. I Commencement signifies a beginning rather than an ending. You have received some of the tools by which you are going to live a life, useful or otherwise, depending a great degree on your attitude and how well you have built during the last twelve years in school. You are on the threshold of real opportunity and real challenge. We hope you will not falter. May you benefit by the instruction and the experiences which you have had in Upper Dub- lin. The school has endeavored to give you a rich, cultural background and a command of the fundamental operations. We hope you will use it as a basis to continue your education, whether in college, in the office, in the shop, or in what- ever field of endeavor you might enter. You have a noble heritage in that you are the recipient of all the scientific and technological advances of preceding years. Many more scientific and technological advances will come into being in your life, and we hope that you will be able to adjust to a changing civilization. Your cul- tural heritage is rich indeed. May you appreciate it, add to it, and help to pass it on to generations yet to be. May your life be a rich benediction of useful' ness and helpfulness in the community in which you live. Every two years, three or two new mem- bers are elected by the people on a party ballot at the Nov- ember election. The Republican and Demo- cratic parties nominate candi- dates for the primary election the third Tuesday of May. Af- ter the fall election the three with the highest votes begin their term the first Monday of December. Qualifications for a member of the school board are that he be a citizen of Up- per Dublin school district for one year and be at least twenty- one years of age. The Board operates the same The Stockholders as a Board of Directors of a large corporation. They have the power to levy taxes, and erect buildings. They make the final endorsement of all se- lections on the staff of the school, approve purchase of all supplies, and ratify the school curriculum. The school board meetings are held the second Monday of every month and are open to the general public for sugges- tion and criticism. Now that we have graduated, we fondly recall our happy, hectic, high school days. The year 1955 found us entering a school filled with new faces. Upper Dub- lin seemed quite large to us as compared with the small elementary schools from which we had come. We were divided in- to four homerooms where we made many friends. As we finally became accustomed to our new school, we began to take an interest in the activities. Our first year was brought to a close with a picnic at Montgomery County Park. Too soon the summer was over, and we were back in school as eighth grade students. How nice it was to see the new seventh grade as confused as we had been. We were glad we knew our way around and were no longer the youngsters of the school. The outstanding event in 1954 was our trip to Harrisburg. We also visited the Hershey factory and especially enjoyed the free samples. However, the most remembered part was Hershey Park with its exciting roller coaster, The Comet. Then came 1955 and we became a real part of the high school as freshmen. It was in that year that we decided what course of study we would pursue. We elected our first class officers and learned that Mrs, Biles and Mr. Taddei would be our advisers. We had a great time preparing for and presenting our play, The Mad Hatters. It was quite hilarious and a huge success. May 31 brought to us our long awaited trip to New York where we visited the United Nations Building, the Statue of Liberty, and many other famous places. This was a pleasant ending for our freshman year. 1956 found us in the Senior High. It was quite a thrill to be able to partici- pate in the varsity sports and we were much more interested in these activities. We sponsored our first dance, Valentine Daze, which was lots of fun, and Tag Day, an annual tradition at UD. To- wards the end of our sophomore year we were all busy ordering our class rings, and wondering where we would ever find the money to pay for them. Our wet picnic at Montgomery County Park brought this busy year to a close. We were greeted upon our return in the fall of 1957 with the arrival of our class rings, spotless and shiny, and we proudly showed them to anyone within sight. We celebrated by sponsoring the annual Ring Dance, During the Christ- mas vacation, we all enjoyed ourselves at I f9J 4 1 HISTORY 'M mg I s N X 'TS 4. OF THE 5 'X annum SENIORS Mtv 0 a Christmas party held at the fire house. After the holidays we really got down to work on the prom. The committees had been chosen and the title, Serenade of the South, had been picked. The time flew by and before we knew it, the prom was only a few weeks away. Who will ever forget the elaborate preparations-the painted stones, the paper flowers, the borrowed shrubs, the beautiful waterfall, and the colorful lights. And finally the big night arrived. Barbara Echardt's coketail party before the prom put every- one in a gay mood. The prom was perfect and Ray Carr's band was fabulous. We had our post prom party at Hustle Inn and then went to Sally Sabold's for break- fast. But the climax wasn't reached until the following morning when we discovered that the pool had leaked all over the gym floor. What a way to end a year! At last September 1958 came and we were Seniors. The first big event of the year was our Senior play, Girl Crazy. Although we worked hard, we had lots of fun and everyone enjoyed it. We sold Christmas cards to raise money for our depleted treasury. Name cards were order- ed and then came Christmas vacation, Our dance, The Sugar Plum Ball, was very , 'tlllfllll e ,gg .9 iityttqsu vstxsvigff it Twig Q9 successful with the jones Boys supplying the music and entertainment. Anyone who helped decorate could not possibly forget the last-minute rushing and especially dec- orating that huge tree. This dance herald- ed Christmas vacation, with all the par- ties and holiday fun. Remember Sabie's Christmas Eve party and our class party at Hustle Inn? Amidst the busy whirl of studies, basketball games, and all our parties, our name cards arrived. Paying for these cards, keeping up with class dues, and other graduation expenses, kept us all broke. This was the year for many memor- able brawls-the girls' pajama parties and the boys' weekends at the mountains. In early May we were the honored guests of the juniors at the prom. After recovering from the prom, we began to get down to work and prepare for our final exams. Then came Baccalaureate and fun and excitement of Class nite. At long last the big night arrived and we received our coveted diplomas with mixed emotions. Now, as we are about to go our sepa- rate ways in life, we realize that although our high school days are over, we shall never forget them. We deeply appreciate all the help we received from a very cooperative faculty and a generous community for providing the school facilities. SENIOR OFFICERS B. Livezey, Secretaryg S. Firman, Treasurer, J. Smith, President, E. Koeblin, Vice President. I should like to express my sincere appreciation to the class of 1959 for its cooperation and enthusiasm during the past year, it has been a great pleasure to work with them. It has been a privilege to work with the other class officers: Evelyh Keoblin, vice president, Becky Livezey, secretary, and Sam Firman, treasurer. The help and understanding of our advisers, Mrs. Biles and Mr. Taddei, have been instrumental in our growth. The cooperation of Dr. Eshelman, Mr. Nor- man jones, and the faculty is deeply appreciated, The class has shown its worth in school, now it is time to show it in life. I am sure they will attain achievements such as those they have gained in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and in their social life. During the middle of August the birds began to preen their feathers for a flight through the season. They resolved to win and win they did by ending the season with fifty-fifty, quite an improvement. The coaches felt that the Cardinals really did improve and enjoyed one of their better seasons by finishing fourth in the newly formed Inter-County League. For the first time in its football history, U.D. edged out one of its biggest rivals, Springfield, by one point. Next year the coaches and the team with the aid of 13 returning letter men, look forward to a successful flight encompassing nine wins and no losses, while capturing the League crown -well, we can dream, can't we, since we shall be influential alumni. 1 J. However, this year it was in a different league, the Inter-County League. Their league record was eleven wins and one loss. Outside of the league, their record was four wins and five losses. The Cards came in second in the Oreland Lions' Basketball Tournament, losing to Am- bler. One reason for the success of the Cards was the coaching of Paul Jones. He planned a difficult sched- ule before the league began so that the Cards would have the needed experience for their league games. Its members are students from each homeroom. Two people are selected by their classmates as representatives for the council. These students must have a C average to remain a member of the Student Council. Elections for officers are held in the spring. The students who wish to run for office must fill a petition with required signatures. Then, the candi- dates form parties which campaign for a week before elections. The climax of campaigning is the election in which all Senior High students vote for their choices. The officers that are elected are: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Captain of the Hall Monitors. This year the officers elected were: Arthur Fad, Presidentg Mary Lea Minehart, Vice Presidentg Barbara Weikel, Secretaryg Vincent Curll, Treasurerg and Bill Everitt, Captain of the Hall Moni- tors. Mr. Duelfer is the adviser for the council this year. Although the Student Council is not as powerful as we wish it might be, it is responsible for many of the extracurricular activities that are carried on at school. The Student Council runs the school store at which school supplies and food may be purchased. The can- F5931 ff X f 1 E Qs teens after the basketball game are also a Student Council project. The Student Council also tries to improve the conditions in school and to interest the students in school activities and programs. School spirit is often a project that needs improve- ment. This year Studerrt Council sold pins and spon- sored a very successful school spirit week. A project this year is the formation of a Student Court. Thus the Members of the court will take the responsibility of punishing other students. Although the Smdent Council is sometimes an un- recognized organization, it does help to promote a democratic school government. JUNIOR HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL y Our junior High Student Council from year to year has performed many valuable services that have helped to make Upper Dublin the wonderful school that it is. It is designed to give its members more responsibility and to assist them in solving their own problems as well as those of the entire junior High. This year their officers were Kay Derau, Presidentg William Weikel, Vice Presidentg Melvin Anderson, Treasurerg and Carrol Neiman, Secretary. E. Kallenbach, Editor Mr. R.
