ENGLISH English classes of the Upper Darby Senior High School teach not only the established rules and present-day literary usage in school situations, but also suggest good practice in the use of language in social situations outside of school. Although in previous years accelerated classes were offered to seniors only, this year accelerated classes have been started for juniors and sophomores. Miss Edith Gaukrodger heads the English Department in which a pro- gram of reading, vocabulary building, com- position, spelling, and punctuation points Upper Darby students to more effective communica- tion in all courses offered. Expressing Thoughts FOREIGN LANGUAGES When in Rome do as the Romans do, is a phrase that is truly understood by Upper Darby pupils who study a foreign language. Under the guidance of Miss Lucille Noble, the foreign language department offers three years of French, Spanish, and Latin and two years of German. Students learn not only to speak a foreign language but also to appreciate many of the strange customs that other countries have; and come to sense how to cope with such problems if they should visit a foreign country. In the college preparatory course stu- dents are required to take two consecutive years of one language in order to meet college entrance requirements. Turner Library, including collections in memory of four people active in school and community affairs in Upper Darby, bear wit- ness to the successful efforts of Miss Ruth Bassett, librarian, and Miss Emma R. Brogan, assistant- librarian. The library also includes general works of reference, such as atlases, dictionaries, and encyclopedias, basic aids for students. It is the library's policy to encourage the use of the library as a source of general information.
