. . . Once in a While A top hit at UDHS. the Upi-Dah offered students an opportunity to display creative writing ability in both poetry and prose. The Upi-Dah also main- tained its traditional excellence in the two issues of the publication, both of which featured “Good Castlekeeping” as the theme. Every M nday afternoon staff members met to read, criticise, and select manuscripts for publica- tion. Editor-in-chief Nidra Poller worked hard and long with her assistants Irene Jacob and Harriet Jekofsky to produce a fine piece of work worthy to compete with the best high school magazines in the United States. Jean Failing, art editor, also contributed to the success of the Upi-Dah. Her work on the first issue was superb and the work she did in advertising forthcoming issues was also very well done. ( JISl J ews . . Thin, reedy sounds of turning pages and exclama' tions of surprise coming from news-hungry Upidites announced the weekly arrival of The Acorn. CD's most widely circulated publication. H.ird work and inspired writing produced this concise, yet complete, seven-day record of school and community events. Each Monday and Tuesday, students found room 210 in a merry-go-round of writing, rewriting, proofreading, and typing, as staff members hurried to meet their deadline. Bob Tobey. editor-in-chief, and Mrs. Anne M. Slick, adviser, headed this fast- moving organization. The entire Acorn staff, shown at the upper left, takes a minute to pose for the camera. Unforgettable “Will you please turn in your copy!” “Who took the dummy? These were phrases heard around the office at almost any hour of the afternoon, any day of the week, as Oa staff members labored ceaselessly to record the 1952-53 school year. The sixteen senior staff members, beginning in Septem- ber. watched the book grow until their finished product delighted the school and community in June. The staff, under the direction of Mr. Carl Hamsher, adviser, and Joyce Mitchell, editor-in-chief, con- verted a vast amount of raw material into running heads, copy, and pictures. Jean Carter, assistant editor, aided her chief in general administrative duties and Anne Gilbert efficiently supervised the copy desk. Mr. Paul Noel, photography adviser, tirelessly and without complaint arranged for and took all pictures which appear in this book. Staff members pictured below are: Kennedy, Rowell, Phillips.
