Our purpose is to present a permanent record of the school year. It has been the sincere effort of the Staff and Editors to include all organizations and teams that have done so much to make our school life complete. With this in mind, we have used the calendar theme in the 1952 OAK to re- cord permanently the joys and sorrows, the tri- umphs and tribulations during this year of school growth. TVe dedicated Saak... For her sincerity, patience, and en- thusiastic interest in all school affairs, our class dedicates the 1952 OAK to Miss Zita E. Mallon, who for fifty- one consecutive years of teaching and administrative service, thirty- three of them at Upper Darby High School, has kept close to her heart the interests of young people in the classroom, in publications, and in social living. 7 4 Oci% Azctmiai foative ÂŁeader .,, To the Class of 1952: We in America are just becoming aware of the great responsibility of world leadership and of the necessity of using all our potential resources in order to maintain that leadership in a badly-divided world. The past genera- tion has witnessed the greatest advances in science, education, medicine, en- gineering. communication, transportation, government and standards of living that the modern world has known. Other advances that will completely over- shadow these will follow in the next generation. You in the Class of 1952 are privileged to live in this great era. It is not without its compensating hazards, dangers, and pitfalls, but we believe that you will carry the torch forward, build- ing more deeply into our national fabric those ideals that our forefathers cher- ished. and passing them on to other people that they. too. may share in our blessings. Your training for this great responsibility has really just begun. We believe that it has been sound and constructive. We wish for all of you a rich, full life âone characterized by growth and achievement and enriched by the blessings that come from unselfish service to mankind. 10 J. H. Tyson. Superintendent TV%ote letters ta ... To the Class of 1952: Commencement and Graduation! For three years you have been eagerly looking forward to that event. Since it has arrived, you wonder whether you are really ready for it. As you ponder, you begin to realize that you are about to sever your ties with your teachers and friends, including many intimate as- sociations. Life lies ahead, and you must look forward toward the solution of many problems which must be met. As you leave the portals of Upper Darby High School, may I assure you that you take with you the best wishes of the faculty for your own personal success and at the same time, the hope that you will ever be ready to defend and preserve our priceless freedom and liberty. One hundred eighteen gold stars in World War II and four thus far in the Korean War bear ample testimony to the courage and bravery of our graduates. May you hold your head high and be keenly aware of the responsibilities which lie ahead. Your Alma Mater believes that you have been equipped with the necessary tools for a creditable performance in life, and it has confidence in each and every one of you. J. E. In our Academic Course, students become ac- quainted with history, economics, and other social studies. The Scientific Course pre- sents concentrated study in intermediate and advanced mathematics and in varied science topics. The experimental facilities make biology, chemistry, and physics prac- tical as well as theoretical. Commercial students learn to operate modern business machines and typewriters. They receive instruction in shorthand, Eng- lish. and law. Many of them obtain actual business experience, working in the commer- cial office. Girls taking the Arts and Crafts Course find their work in the home economics de- partment not only interesting but also very valuable in their future life. The boys learn manual skills in the shops, thereby obtaining preparation for many and varied occupa- tions. 16 .., voc zti M .,. Shown lower left is Miss Garenâs academic typing classâa course open to all students. Pictured at the right, future farmers demonstrate automobile motor repair in agriculture class. During the past five years the School Board has doubled the size of the Senior High School campus by adding sixteen acres of land. The carefully-planned expansion program, now nearing completion, includes an academic wing, a gymnasium, and a bus garage. Meanwhile, the problem of in- creased elementary school population has been partly solved by the building of two new elementary schoolsâPrimos and Hill- crest. Claiming the School Board's attention while administering these projects totaling $4,000.000. have been all the usual problems of maintenance, finance, and instruction, and a sustained interest in all the schools of the Township. Members of the Board pictured above in the first row are: Mr. Vanleer I. Bond. Mrs. Bertha S. Wert, Dr. George G. Dilworth, Mrs. Rhoda S. Seeburger. Mr. John H. TiJe sientemfiei.., John Smith Billingslea John Smith Billingslea, who was born in 1892 in Westminster. Maryland, grad- uated from Western Maryland College in 1913 where his activities were extensive, in- cluding a full athletic program and a posi- tion on the varsity football team. However, his greatest interest lay in the field of music as a member of the Glee Club and of a quartet that sang throughout the State. After graduation he continued his studies at Johns Hopkins and assisted his father, the president of Smith and Yingling Canning Company. He then served as an officer with the U. S. Army in the Mexican Border War and World War I. After the war he served as a director of one of the influential newspapers of Maryland and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Westmin- ster Bank. He took an active part in the local Rotary Club, in Masonic activities, and served as Post Commander of the American Legion. Then in 1921 he was elected to the Maryland State Legislature. In the follow- ing years, a physical condition which devel- oped as a result of military service became more acute and caused him to build up an entirely new pattern of living. After com- pleting his graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania, Mr. Billingslea came to Upper Darby and became head of our His- tory Department four years later. Now Mr. Billingslea has fitted into a new patternâbigger and better than he ever knew here. Only the place he lived in is gone. The teacher we knew, the mind we felt, the character that impressed us. the soul of the man is alive. What he contrib- uted to our lives will not fade outâwill not be lost. To his students he was a friend, sympathetic and kind, an understanding teacher and a gentleman. All those who knew Mr. Billingslea loved and admired him for his helpfulness and quiet discipline. 19 g W tke Acetteb... To further better understanding between faculty and student body, the Upper Darby Student Council functioned with a member- ship of one representative from each home- room and a member from each of the lead- ing school organizations. Under the leadership of President Babs Miller, the council staged a clean-up cam- paign for the cafeteria, sponsored a Leap Year Dance, and sent a Christmas basket to a needy family in the community as some of their various activities throughout the year. Since this student group formulates and re- vises school laws governing the three classes, this year they revised the constitution and chartered the Musical Masterpieces and Horace Mann Clubs. With Vice-President Parke Hess, Secretaries Ann Adams and Artie Copes. Treasurers Jack Schumacker and John Hartmire. and Sergeant-at-Arms Don Jones, the council attended meetings of the Suburban Student Council and ush- ered at Back to School Night.
