Enthusiasm of Purple or Gold during color con- tests, cheers for Purple and Gold during athletic events, sweet triumph over Haverford in the last football game of the year, aromas from chem lab and lunch room, six-weeks tests and mid-years, friendly greetings in the halls, dance decorations in the gym, senior portrait sittings, Senior Prom, caps and gowns, commencement—these and more we shall always remember when we think of our senior year at Upper Darby High. Our purpose is to present a permanent record of the school year. It has been the sincere effort of the Staff and Editors to include all organizations and teams that have done so much to make our school life complete. With this in mind, we have used the calendar theme in the 1952 OAK to re- cord permanently the joys and sorrows, the tri- umphs and tribulations during this year of school growth. we dedicated au% do-oie... For her sincerity, patience, and en- thusiastic interest in all school affairs, our class dedicates the 1952 OAK to Miss Zita E. Mallon, who for fifty- one consecutive years of teaching and administrative service, thirty- three of them at Upper Darby High School, has kept close to her heart the interests of young people in the classroom, in publications, and in social living. 7 Occi act M U4tn,atcve ... To the Class of 1952: We in America are just becoming aware of the great responsibility of world leadership and of the necessity of using all our potential resources in order to maintain that leadership in a badly-divided world. The past genera- tion has witnessed the greatest advances in science, education, medicine, en- gineering, communication, transportation, government and standards of living that the modern world has known. Other advances that will completely over- shadow these will follow in the next generation. You in the Class of 1952 are privileged to live in this great era. It is not without its compensating hazards, dangers, and pitfalls, but we believe that you will carry the torch forward, build- ing more deeply into our national fabric those ideals that our forefathers cher- ished, and passing them on to other people that they, too, may share in our blessings. Your training for this great responsibility has really just begun. We believe that it has been sound and constructive. We wish for all of you a rich, full life —one characterized by growth and achievement and enriched by the blessings that come from unselfish service to mankind. J. H. Tyson, Superintendent 10 Ti nate letters fo ,., To the Class of 1952: Commencement and Graduation! For three years you have been eagerly looking forward to that event. Since it has arrived, you wonder whether you are really ready for it. As you ponder, you begin to realize that you are about to sever your ties with your teachers and friends, including many intimate as- sociations. Life lies ahead, and you must look forward toward the solution of many problems which must be met. As you leave the portals of Upper Darby High School, may I assure you that you take with you the best wishes of the faculty for your own personal success and at the same time, the hope that you will ever be ready to defend and preserve our priceless freedom and liberty. One hundred eighteen gold stars in World War II and four thus far in the Korean War bear ample testimony to the courage and bravery of our graduates. May you hold your head high and be keenly aware of the responsibilities which lie ahead. Your Alma Mater believes that you have been equipped with the necessary tools for a creditable performance in life, and it has confidence in each and every one of you. J. E. In our Academic Course, students become ac- quainted with history, economics, and other social studies. The Scientific Course pre- sents concentrated study in intermediate and advanced mathematics and in varied science topics. The experimental facilities make biology, chemistry, and physics prac- tical as well as theoretical. Commercial students learn to operate modern business machines and typewriters. They receive instruction in shorthand, Eng- lish, and law. Many of them obtain actual business experience, working in the commer- cial office. Girls taking the Arts and Crafts Course find their work in the home economics de- partment not only interesting but also very valuable in their future life. The boys learn manual skills in the shops, thereby obtaining preparation for many and varied occupa- tions. 16 In the picture, upper left of the pre- ceding page, members of the acceler- ated chemistry class gathered accurate data for an experiment. Shown lower left is Miss Saren's academic typing class—a course open to all students. Pictured at the right, future farmers demonstrate automobile motor repair in agriculture class. In the picture below, boys of the Arts and Crafts Course study the metal lathe in metal shop. 17 SCectect zctifem felcitwect,,, During the past five years the School Board has doubled the size of the Senior High School campus by adding sixteen acres of land. The carefully-planned expansion program, now nearing completion, includes an academic wing, a gymnasium, and a bus garage. Meanwhile, the problem of in- creased elementary school population has been partly solved by the building of two new elementary schools—Primos and Hill- crest. Claiming the School Board's attention while administering these projects totaling $4,000,000, have been all the usual problems of maintenance, finance, and instruction, and a sustained interest in all the schools of the Township. Members of the Board pictured above in the first row are: Mr. Vanleer I. Bond, Mrs. Bertha S. Wert, Dr. George G. Dilworth, Mrs. Rhoda S. Seeburger, Mr. John H. Fra- zier; in the second row: Dr. Edgar B. Cale, Mr. George W. Hoehler, Assistant to the Superintendent, Mr. N. Horace Berman, Dr. J. Vernon Ellson, Mr. John H. Tyson, Super- intendent of Schools, Mr. John C. Parry, Mr. John J. Schiedel, Secretary, Mr. Stewart B. Harkness, Treasurer, Mr. R. Winfield Baile, Solicitor. 18 'Wc sicfttem ex... John Smith Billingslea, who was born in 1892 in Westminster, Maryland, grad- uated from Western Maryland College in 1913 where his activities were extensive, in- cluding a full athletic program and a posi- tion on the varsity football team. However, his greatest interest lay in the field of music as a member of the Glee Club and of a quartet that sang throughout the State. After graduation he continued his studies at Johns Hopkins and assisted his father, the president of Smith and Yingling Canning Company. He then served as an officer with the U. S. Army in the Mexican Border War and World War I. After the war he served as a director of one of the influential newspapers of Maryland and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Westmin- ster Bank. He took an active part in the local Rotary Club, in Masonic activities, and served as Post Commander of the American Legion. Then in 1921 he was elected to the Maryland State Legislature. In the follow- ing years, a physical condition which devel- oped as a result of military service became more acute and caused him to build up an entirely new pattern of living. After com- pleting his graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania, Mr. Billingslea came to Upper Darby and became head of our His- tory Department four years later. Now Mr. Billingslea has fitted into a new pattern—bigger and better than he ever knew here. Only the place he lived in is gone. The teacher we knew, the mind we felt, the character that impressed us, the soul of the man is alive. What he contrib- uted to our lives will not fade out—will not be lost. To his students he was a friend, sympathetic and kind, an understanding teacher and a gentleman. All those who knew Mr. Billingslea loved and admired him for his helpfulness and quiet discipline. 19 e ivtct t e ce(te ... Our school secretaries help the machine of school business affairs to run more smoothly by keeping accurate records of enrollments, courses, grades, and personal histories for the administration. Assisting the superintendent are Miss Elizabeth Longaker, Mrs. Betty Jo Apple, and Miss Miriam Powers; Mrs. Elizabeth Paxton's assignment is as Mr. Hoehler's pri- vate secretary. Working in the principal's office are Miss Dorothy Cole and Miss Ro- many Craig. Mrs. Margaret Boyd directs the High School Office, Mrs. Thelma Malin has charge of the Activities Fund, and Miss Walda Corriston is secretary in Mr. Holmes' office. The cafeteria corpsmen, whom most Upi- dites see from I 1:45 to 1:15, are on the job before and after the students are in school. Under the direction of Mrs. Ann Snyder, head dietitian, a staff of seven women pro- vided lunches for hungry students. The workers this year were Mrs. Gertrude Bo- gart, Mrs. Emma Devitt, Mrs. Mable Elber- son, Mrs. Mary Hippie, Mrs. Florence Lloyd, Mrs. Catherine Palmer, and Mrs. Lydia Schlichter. £ e(p UMxn ed The school spirit at Upper Darby sure is swell, commented the cadet teachers this year. These young men and women from Penn, Temple, Drexel, West Chester, and Villanova are re- quired by state law to student-teach for one semester. Besides helping the faculty in the classroom and taking charge of one class for a month, they are given other duties, including work in the office, library, or study hall. Miss Mallon is the school superviser of this program. Cadet teachers for the first semester are pictured at the top right: Neu- bauer, Ranire, Feldman, Shubert, Hughes, Sloan, Cotter, Mitchell, Zang- will, Sigliotti; Second semester: Long, Szczurowski, Peggs, Applestun, Schenk, Weinstock, De Rosa, Snitzer, Hare, Andolaro, Rhudy. Striving to keep our rooms, halls, and campus clean were head custodian, David Lewis, and assistants, Dudley King, Evan Meredith, Frank Whilldin, Reuben Neidlinger, Steven Swartz, Wil- liam Mann, and Sadie Davis. Pictured is Mr. Lewis on the job. 21 Ou% acCvC e% c uac Setting a new record for the 100- yard dash, Miss Alice Goodman rushed down the hall between her Spanish classes and the senior office. She then began her daily duties as Spanish teacher, chairman of the service honor roll committee, member of many other faculty committees, and adviser to the class of '52 Always surrounded by a group of students, Aunt Alice enjoyed con- sulting with us or just gossiping about school events. When we look back on our high school days, we will always remember Miss Goodman's friendly manner, her kindness, her fairness, and her enthusiastic pride in our class. Pictured at the right, Miss Goodman cuts a cake at a party with her All- School Show football boys. 24 t tfecwp AavtcU,,,, Mr. Herzog's friendly smile and lively spirit have animated all our class activi- ties—sophomore magazine campaign, parties, dances, checking the senior pictures and gowns, and the problems of a busy senior year. His encourage- ment and guidance have proved inval- uable to our class. In addition to his class activities, Mr. Herzog spent much time instructing the boys in gym and supervising play- ground activities in the school district. We will not soon forget the time, thought, and effort Mr. Herzog de- voted to us and our interests during our senior year. Mr. Herzog is shown at the left in consultation with one of his boys. 25 S rlif ca the .year -me elected -allicere.., Wielding the gavel for the Class of '52, Parke Hess demonstrated his versatility in every phase of activity including the ACORN, Student Council, class commit- tees, W.A.F. and Hi-Y clubs, baseball and intramurals, and scholarship. Active in sports was Parke's assistant, Bob Abbott, who also contributed to the Stu- dent Council and Hi-Y. Bob served for three years as Purple color captain. Leading the list of Joan Miller's activities were hockey and the vice-presidency of Girls' Hi-Y. Our secretary also participated in class committees, Student Council, and A Cappella. Financial expert for the Class of '52 was Rowland Hutchinson. Hutch, president of Boys' Hi-Y, also took part in Student Council, class committees, and baseball. 26 4 c Miwtcttcc eo %ctiwatect activities... With the goal of boosting school spirit the Senior Executive Committee, under President Parke Hess, met every Monday morning. The class advisers and the seven- teen members discussed class problems and planned for the party, play, and dance. They sent cards and flowers to students and teachers when they were ill and on Memorial Day they placed wreaths on the graves of teachers who had died. The committee, with Bob Abbott, also arranged our assem- bly programs. The Senior Executive Committee shown standing below are first row: Treasurer Rowland Hutchinson, Historian Joan Parker, President Parke Hess, Secretary Joan Miller, Vice-President Bob Abbott; second row: David MacCleary, Ann Kildare, Joyce Mac- Gillivray, Sue Holmes, Barbara Frazier, Bet- tina Belefonte; third row: Harold Keeler, Jack MacKnight, David Kline, Bill Fawley, Bruce Schmucker, Tom Kerr. Miss Goodman and Mr. Herzog, class advisers, proved the steadying influence of the committee. 27 jilted £ e ctcuf many,,, Upper Darby is proud of these six stu- dents who have distinguished themselves by achieving highest scholastic honors in the class of 1952. They have not only proved their scholastic ability for three years but also have given much of their time and serv- ice to school activities. Because of their consistent effort, they have attained the Scholarship Award, which entitles them to have their name engraved upon the Scholar- ship Plaque. The top six in scholarship in the Class of 1952, pictured below in the order of their final standings, are Lavonne Olson, Elizabeth Eller, Geraldine Fenner, Lesley Tarleton, Paul Strenge, and Lois Parry. • • • The class of 1952 honors the six members who in the eyes of their classmates have con- tributed most during their three years in Upper Darby High School to the school's success in athletics, student government, dramatics, publications, class activities, clubs, and musical organizations. Loyalty and devotion to Upper Darby have won for them the admiration of their classmates and the honor of having their names inscribed upon the Service Plaque in the front hall. To further better understanding between faculty and student body, the Upper Darby Student Council functioned with a member- ship of one representative from each home- room and a member from each of the lead- ing school organizations. Under the leadership of President Babs Miller, the council staged a clean-up cam- paign for the cafeteria, sponsored a Leap Year Dance, and sent a Christmas basket to a needy family in the community as some of their various activities throughout the year. Since this student group formulates and re- vises school laws governing the three classes, this year they revised the constitution and chartered the Musical Masterpieces and Horace Mann Clubs. With Vice-President Parke Hess, Secretaries Ann Adams and Artie Copes, Treasurers Jack Schumacker and John Hartmire, and Sergeant-at-Arms Don Jones, the council attended meetings of the Suburban Student Council and ush- ered at Back to School Night. The two hundred boys who came out for intramural basketball were divided into four leagues. The league winners were sopho- more homerooms 4 and 209, junior homeroom 125, and senior homeroom 230. The juniors captured the school championship. Twenty homerooms, forming ten teams, competed in intramural baseball. Mr. Fred Loeb, who directed the entire boys' intramural sports program, awarded purple and gold numerals to members of each championship squad. ?« cut UttXCUKU Cli fewyxcuK,,, Amateur sportswomen of Upper Darby availed themselves of the opportunities for competing on intramural teams. In recog- nition of outstanding teamwork, each member of championship squads received a set of numerals. Because the construction of the new gymnasium greatly re- duced the area of the hockey field, the girls' intramural program included only three sports this year. The basketball round-robin proved popular last winter when 350 sophomore, junior, and senior girls turned out to participate. Volleyball again was a popular between-season sport. This is the third year that U. D. girls have taken part in intramural softball. A softball club of intramural players scheduled games with clubs of other schools.
