PRI CIPAL Although personal contact has been limited to a small number of students, most of us have enjoyed pleasant, casual meetings with our principal, Dr. James E. Nancarrow. His enthusiastic interest in all student projects and activities has been curtailed by his many pressing obligations as principal of such a large high school. Dr. Nancarrow's favorite project, the Leadership Development Program, went into eifect for a trial period this year. The plan has proved a success and will be continued next year. Dr. Nancarrow believes that Upper Darby has one of the best balanced prof grams of outside activities in the nation. In his infrequent spare moments, our principal tries to catch up on the latest developments in school life. All phases of student activity interest him, but he particularly enjoys sports, for he is an enthusif astic hunter and fisherman. Gardening is another favorite outdoor activity Dr. Nancarrow's chief regret is that this heavy duties prevent him from knowing each student inf dividually, but the members of the Class of 1951 will always remember him as an important part of their life at Upper Darby. Miss Mary L. Lulcens, Director of Educational Measurementsg Mr. Lewis O. Goas, Assistant to the Superintendentg Miss Pauline Roffe, Elementary School Supervisor. ASSISTANTS TO THE SUPERI TE DE Elementary and high school expansion and educational testing programs demand able ad' ministrators-and that is what Superintendent of Schools John H. Tyson has in his three assistants: George W. Hoehler, Mary L. Lukens, and Pauline E. Roife. Between them they boast 56 years of service to Upper Darby's school district. Mr. Hoehler succeeds Lewis O. Goas, who left for Washington February 27 :to further national civilian defense preparations. Prior to Mr. Hoehler's appointment, Mr. Goas had completed making specif fications for all equipment, supplies, and materials necessary for building UD Townships two new elementary schools. Mr. Hoehler now has charge of filling specifications for over two million dollars worth of high school additions now under construcf tion. Mr. Hoehler arrived in UDHS in 1925 after graduating from Williamson Trade School and ob' taining an M.A. and B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.E. from Drexel Institute of Technology. In September of last year, he was ap' pointed head of the Industrial Arts Department. Miss Lukens supervises township :tests and measurements and special educational placements. Seniors should recall her proctoring their I.Q. and comprehension examinations in the auditorium. An Upper Darby resident from birth, Miss Lukens at' tended and obtained her B.A. from Swarthmore and an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. She subsequently taught in Monmouth, New Jersey, and Middleton Township, Delaware County, until her arrival at Upper Darby in 1923. Supervisor of Elementary Schools, Miss Roffe, came to UD in 1938 after serving in this same capacity in Altoona, Pa. Upon graduation from Lock Haven State Teachers College, she attended Columbia University where she obtained her B.A. and M.A. degrees. Miss Roffe supervises the selec' tion of textbooks and the course of study in the twelve elementary schools in this district. She also observes the progress of the new personnel and co' ordinates the teaching methods so they will be uni' form in all the grade schools. Twentyfsix
