PRINCIPAL In his seventh year as principal of Upper Darby high school. Dr. James E. Nancarrow has proved himself an able leader. The problems which he has faced have been many. However, school aifairs have run so smoothly under his direction that few realise the amount of work entailed in the efficient running of such a large high school. This year, for example, he has inaugurated a leadership' development point program, for limitation of extra-cur- ricular activities, which will go into effect next year. This plan, he hopes, will allow a more even distribution of activities. Moreover, in addition to his regular duties as principal. Dr. Nancarrow serves as an officer of both the Pennsyl- vania State Principals’ association and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic association. Although many of the students have not known Dr. Nancarrow personally, they have seen his friendly smile, his enthusiastic support of athletic events and his interest in school projects and activities; and they know that he is interested in Upper Darby in the true Purple and Gold spirit. 14 Dr. Nancarrow goes over a letter with hi secretary, ' Mi»» Cole.

To the superintendent and his assistant falls the overall planning for the entire district— composing a senior high schtxil, a junior high school and ten elementary schools. The principal of the high school is charged with the general policy-making of the school and with the inter- pretation of the school to the public. The deans serve the dual role of guidance counsellors and disciplinary officers. The registrar must make rosters for every student, assign pupils to classes and send credentials to colleges. The director of tests and measurements is in full charge of a comprehensive testing program. The director of attendance issues excuses for absence and pre- pares absence and tardiness reports for the school and state. 16
