E' E., V' , .V ' 'il To the spirit of gay adventure and staunch determination typical of the '49ers of old, we proudly dedicate this yearbook. A single century has passed since our forefathers braved the treacherous unknown and pushed on to brighter horizons in their search for gold. A full century-in which our progress has been measured by radios, telephones, airplanes, and countless other modern inventions which are characteristic of our present atomic age. In 1849, each individual, as he sought his share of the wealth, was forced to surmount innumerable obstacles to achieve his goal. Many en- thusiastic men were never to reach California, yet these same men were to become the founders of new settlements, thereby broadening and advancing the spread of civilization in our country. We, too, are '49ers. We, too, are possessed with the same spirit that obsessed our ancestors, and we, too, are seeking wealth. Yet, we are striving for a wealth more precious than gold-an enduring, satisfying wealth in which we may find happiness, health, and above all peace. Many of us will also be attracted by seemingly more important things. Yet, there will be a significant few who will struggle on, fighting against every obstacle until the goal is attained. This '49er, our cheerful, wizened character, is going to escort you through the pages of this book, which reflect our gay moments along with our serious ones. 1
