Upper Darby was once known as the fastest growing suburban township in the United States. Through the years it has become bigger, better, and more prominent. New stores, new homes and new roadways are being built every day. Because of the fast'growing population, larger grade schools and secondary schools have become absolute necessities. During the community's rapid expansion, stress has been laid upon accommodating the social, religi- ous, and economic needs of the people. We should be grateful to live in such a prosperous community. Top: A view of Upper Darby’» usu- ally busy shopping center with the Terminal Building at the foot of the hill. Middle: The Lansdowne Trolley- Station where students congregate daily to take trolleys for various sec- tions of the township. Bottom: The main branch of the U. D. post office on West Garrett Road.

For two years the class of 1948 eagerly awaited the annual publication of Upper Darby High School’s yearbook, the Oak. Now we are privileged to experience the pleasure and satisfaction obtained from producing the book ourselves. In the Oak we have given our best and hope that this well-thumbed volume has faithfully recorded memories of three wonderful years at Upper Darby. There have been many changes since we entered Upper Darby in the fall of 1945. Of greatest significance was the end of World War II. In our sophomore year, the peace was so welcome that nothing else seemed important. But with the coming of 1947, we realized that the world was not yet at peace and that our responsibilities were heavier than ever. Living in a land of plenty, we failed to recognize the poverty of the war-torn countries. However, the end of 1947 and the dawn of 1948 found us formu- lating the Marshall Plan, designed to assist Europe in regaining its peace- time status. In our own country, the New Look” presently holds sway, and the perennial favorite, bubble gum, has returned to delight the younger set and torture the elders. In Upper Darby we are proud of our school and its accomplishments and hope that this yearbook will serve as a permanent record of our events, for we have had enjoyment in recording them for you in the 1948 Oak. After one of the numerous storms of the past winter. School Lane (to the right) became a white pathway to school. Below, between classes U.D.’s halls and stairways are always crowded with students. A familiar shot taken in Naylor's Run, which is picturesque- ly situated behind the school.
