Vvvvv15XC? f’ —« rv - 'SWi v - iX-v Yi ifrco- Y fr W pv-v-CTMj '-' 3 the 194 we dedicati: It is with pride that we dedicate the 194S Oak to our parents. In a tribute long overdue, we extend our thanks for their unselfish and tireless efforts to secure better school facilities and to maintain high standards for the students. Beyond the realm of material betterment, they have stimulated a desire for advancement in us. Our parents have stood in the shadow of our progress, applaud- ing our successes, shouldering our disappointments, and constantly urging us to look toward the future. From them we learned to cherish the privileges and accept the responsibilities that go hand in hand with democracy—our priceless heritage. May we be worthy of their ideals and build high upon the firm foundations they have laid for us. Pour For two years the class of 1948 eagerly awaited the annual publication of Upper Darby High School’s yearbook, the Oak. Now we are privileged to experience the pleasure and satisfaction obtained from producing the book ourselves. In the Oak we have given our best and hope that this well-thumbed volume has faithfully recorded memories of three wonderful years at Upper Darby. There have been many changes since we entered Upper Darby in the fall of 1945. Of greatest significance was the end of World War II. In our sophomore year, the peace was so welcome that nothing else seemed important. But with the coming of 1947, we realized that the world was not yet at peace and that our responsibilities were heavier than ever. Living in a land of plenty, we failed to recognize the poverty of the war-torn countries. However, the end of 1947 and the dawn of 1948 found us formu- lating the Marshall Plan, designed to assist Europe in regaining its peace- time status. In our own country, the New Look” presently holds sway, and the perennial favorite, bubble gum, has returned to delight the younger set and torture the elders. In Upper Darby we are proud of our school and its accomplishments and hope that this yearbook will serve as a permanent record of our events, for we have had enjoyment in recording them for you in the 1948 Oak. Five Upper Darby was once known as the fastest growing suburban township in the United States. Through the years it has become bigger, better, and more prominent. New stores, new homes and new roadways are being built every day. Because of the fast'growing population, larger grade schools and secondary schools have become absolute necessities. During the community's rapid expansion, stress has been laid upon accommodating the social, religi- ous, and economic needs of the people. We should be grateful to live in such a prosperous community. Top: A view of Upper Darby’ usu- ally busy shopping center with the Terminal Building at the foot of the hill. Middle: The Lansdowne Trolley- Station where students congregate daily to take trolleys for various sec- tions of the township. Bottom: The main branch of the U. D. post office on West Garrett Road. Upper Darby's college prepara- tory course offers a wide selection of subjects to students aspiring to continue their education beyond high school. To provide for specialization, this course is divided into two curricula—namely, the scientific and the academic. The sciences, foreign languages, and mathematics are foremost on the rosters of those pupils carrying the former curriculum. History, foreign languages, problems of democracy, and sociology are studied by those in the latter curriculum. The college preparatory course is the largest of the three offered, attracting over half of the total enroll- ment. Commercial For those whose interests lie in the business world. Upper Darby presents courses in the following four fields: stenography, accounting, salesmanship, and general business. A limited number of students from the salemanship curriculum are selected each year to participate in the distributive education program. This system, which provides for actual working experience as well as class work, is under the supervision of Joseph E. Rhile. The commercial curriculum is planned so that students will have sufficient training upon completion of their high school course to obtain immediate employment. Ji JH) cLwu 6 0' th UXOyo-lA. Arts and Crafts 4— ■. The arts and crafts course is intended for those who plan to enter into a particular trade or business upon graduation. This course has five main divisions: art, agriculture, home economics, music, and metal and wood skills. In addition to their fields of con- centration, the arts and crafts students must carry a minimum of six hours of work in subjects directly related. Moreover, there are certain required sub- jects each year. By this plan, students in the arts and crafts curriculum may be assured of a specialized knowledge in their chosen field. It OAK D O F EDUCATION Credit is due to the members of the Upper Darby School Board for the part which they have played in enabling the schools of this district to run smoothly. This year, four new candidates were welcomed to the Board: Mrs. Lena M. Adelizzi, Dr. Edgar B. Cale, Mr. John C. Parry, and Mrs. Marion M. Sweeney. Members of longer standing include Dr. George G. Dilworth, President, Mr. John H. Frazier, Vice-President, Mr. Vanleer I. Bond, Dr. J. Vernon Ellson, and Mr. W. Harry Schaffer. In addition, many years of faithful service have been given by Mr. John J. Schiedel, Secretary, Mr. Stewart B. Harkness, Treasurer, Mr. R. Winfield Baile, Solicitor, and Mr. John H. Tyson, Superintendent. The paramount problem on the Board's agenda this year was that of expanding our school system. In order to cope with the increase in population, it will be necessary for Upper Darby to build new schools and to secure new educational facilities. We are proud of our School Board that has worked faith- fully and wisely in behalf of Upper Darby's students. Having served Upper Darby in the capacity of principal for twenty-four years, John H. Tyson has now completed five years as superintendent of schools. Upper Darby is deeply grateful for hi? faithful and untiring service to both school and community. Although few students enjoy any personal contact with Mr. Tyson, we realize that he is genuinely interested in us as individuals, as a class and as a school, and in the problems which confront us in preparation for the future. He is willing to assist us in any way to further our projects. Plans for the expansion of the senior high, which arc so necessary if Upper Darby is to maintain its high standard, are also his deep concern. In addition, he is a loyal supporter of all our athletic contests. He frequently attends games, spurring the team to victory. The students of Upper Darby, and particularly the Class of 1948, wish to take this opportunity to ex- press their sincere appreciation and gratitude to Mr Tyson. Whenever our thoughts turn to our school life, we shall remember his helpful guidance through twelve profitable school years. Mr. Ty on, with all his work, takes time out to have his picture taken. Twenty-two PRINCIPAL For our three years in Upper Darby, we have been under Dr. James Nancarrow's leadership and supervision; his jovial manner and ever-present smile are familiar to all of us. Many problems confront him, as principal of such a large school, but we are sure that Dr. Nancarrow has met and solved the ones of the present and the future, in order to make Upper Darby a worthy and efficient high school. Like a true Upper Darbyite, Dr. Nancarrow has taken a keen interest in our school's sports and all activities. In addition, he finds enjoyment in hunting, fishing, and general reading. Dr. Nancarrow came to Upper Darby in the fall of 1943 from Williamsport High School, where he was also principal; continuing in this capacity at Upper Darby, he has helped to make Upper Darby what it is today. In the years to come our thoughts will often return to the man who guided us through our three years at Upper Darby High School, and our lives will be richer from being under his influence during our high school years. TAKE A LETT E It! Behind the scenes of the Administration is a group of efficient ladies whom most of us overlook. They arc the secretaries who type records and reports, and do many other jobs that are very important to the school system. Our questions are always answered with a smile, and these women help make our school and its activities what they are today. Mrs. Henry, Mrs. Hastings, and Miss Longacre work in the Superintendent’s office and help keep the entire school district functioning smoothly. Miss Corriston and Mrs. Tipton, in the high school office, specialize in student problems as assistants to Mr. Holmes. Dr. Nancarrow’s private secretary, Miss Cole has charge of all correspondence and bulletins. In the attendance office, Mrs. Malin is the secretary for the Activities Fund, while Mrs. Blake serves as the principal's secretary. To these women, the class of 1948 wishes to ex- press its appreciation for a task well done. Thirty PRACTICE MAKES PE Left: Firtt Semester Student Teachers—First row: J. Zinno, Y. Garofi, H. Exar, M. Student teachers arrive at Upper Darby twice dur- ing the school year. Most of these men and women have completed four years at a university and spend one-half of their fifth year doing practice teaching. This year Upper Darby was fortunate in having forty- seven of these students, twenty-six during the first semes- ter and twenty-one during the second semester. The Uni- versity of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Drexel Insti- tute of Technology, and Villanova College were repre- sented during the two semesters Each student teacher is under the supervision of Miss Mallon and the particular teacher to whom he is assigned. Each helps perform many of the duties of the teacher. These duties include assum- ing charge of classes, supervising study halls, taking charge of homerooms, and performing any necessary clerical work. There is a mutual benefit from this plan; we are grate- ful for the new ideas which they bring to us, and the stu- dent teachers gain experience here which culminates their training. Thirty-one IHETAHY IM This year we creeted Mrs. Snyder to the school as the successor to Mrs. Knox, our former cafeteria manager for many years. Working with our cafeteria personnel this year and last has been Dr. Mary De Garmo Bryan, food expert from Colombia. Because of her recommendations following a survey of cafeteria needs, several changes were introduced; namely, the installation of a new counter in the teachers' lunch room, the employment of paid cashiers, and the instituting of a new lunch period system. Another new member of the cafeteria staff is Miss Rothcnberger, who is supervisor of health and nutrition and whose duty it is to direct and integrate the educational program. In addition, she assists in managing school cafeterias throughout the township. The main object this year has been to encourage students to buy hot lunches. This plan has proved quite successful because of the government subsidy program, which enables the schools to maintain a minimum price level. Mr . Snyder, cafeteria manager, checking her daily totals. Below: (1) Mr . Schlichtcr and Mrs. Bogart buttering the hot dog rolls; (2) Mrs. Carson inspecting the salad; (3) Mrs. Devitt and Mrs. Elverson prepar- ing the soup; (4) Miss Palmer and Mrs. Frantz fixing the salads. Thtrty'two IKYICE AI Thirty-three Despite today's critical help shortage, the maintenance staff of the Upper Darby High School has maintained its high standards. Mr. Butterworth, as superintendent of buildings and grounds, and his efficient staff of workers are to be congratulated for the out- standing job which they have been doing in keeping the school building and grounds in such fine condition. Under Mr. Butterworth's supervision, each room is cleaned daily, school grounds are kept pre- sentable the year round, repair work, such as carpentry and painting, is done promptly, and the school heating system is properly regulated. In addition, the routes and schedules of the school buses arc worked out by the maintenance staff. Seldom does the student of Upper Darby realize how widespread are the duties of Mr. Butterworth's staff, nor how much the excellent management of maintenance contributes to his health, safety, and happiness while in school. Below, beginning top left: Pat Frinnerty and Michael Rouse at work on the hockey field; David Lewis looks up as he fixes a door; Andy Gallagher, Pat Cair, Ray Blight, and Jimmy Gallagher erecting bleachers; Bill Hurlock, Mrs. Davis, and Nick Borelli pose in the cafeteria. V LTlB S Jt PLEIADES Those students who wish to take part in the dramatic activities of the school find their opportunities in Miss Reed's Pleiades. Through their participation in school plays, the club members are given the chance to study, not only dramatics, but also stage craft, make-up, and costume designing. TAY-WISTALVAN Under Miss Weimer’s capable guidance, the members of the Tay- Wistalvan endeavor to familiarize themselves with plays and novels, both classical and modern. At the monthly club meetings, recent liter- ature is discussed and plans are made for attending future theatrical productions. THE LATIN CLUB The Latin Club, after a period of inactivity, was revived this year by its sponsor, Miss Noble. The members worked diligently to pre- pare boxes of food and clothing for the pupils of Colston's School in England. In addition. Miss Noble presented her slides of England and Switzerland. Under the guidance of their sponsor, Mr. Boyd, the boys usher at football and basketball games and share in the management of the information desk. To them is due the credit for arranging for this year's foot' Kill mascot. LIBRARY CLUB Under the able supervision of Miss Mabel Buckwalter, the Li- brary Club serves the student body by managing Upper Darby's small but popular library. As an annual project, the club is compiling a handbook which will serve as a directory for students unfamiliar with the library system. WORLD AFFAIRS FORUM Keeping in stride with current affairs is the aim of the World Affairs Forum. Guided by Mr. Coffey, the members arc enlight- ened by the views of a guest speak- er once a month. Panel discussions, radio programs, and the Temple Civic League Forum are on the W.A.F.'s annual agenda. Boy ’ Hi-Y Library Club World Affair Forum rr:i-its LEEUWENHOEK With a membership of fifteen, the Leeuwenhoek Society meets bi monthly to study the microscope and related subjects. TERRAQUA T erraqua, sponsored by Mr. Lower, is maintained for those students who are interested in science, especially biology. An- nually the club visits scientific insti- tutions and makes occasional trips to nearby nature spots. One of their yearly projects has been the collection of specimens for use in biology classes. GIRLS’ BOWLING Meeting each Thursday afternoon at the Playhouse, the Bowling Club, led by Miss Ruth Brcese, promotes a competitive spirit among some sixty members. The outstanding feature of the year is a banquet held in the spring, when the officers for the following year are announced. Leeuwenhoek Trrraqua Girl ’ Bowling Club The members of the Steinmetz Scientific Society are those students who are particularly interested in the physical sciences. Club meet- ings, which are held once a week under the sponsorship of Mr. Culver, are enlivened by movies, guest speakers, or lectures which have been prepared as a student project. HIPPOCRATES CLUB Under the direction of Miss Sommerficld, the members of the Hippocrates Club pursue the study of medicine. In accordance with this interest, they toured the Dela- ware County and Presbyterian Hospitals. The club was also privi- leged to witness an operation at the Women's Medical College in Germantown. Forty'four O F T II F STUDENTS The purpose of the S ode CflpkciL is to promote cooperation between studentytnd tgacher' and aid the students of Upper Darby High to ap- preciate the privileges and responsibilities of democracy. The Student Council is representative of all homerooms and other influential organizations in the school. It functions around seven standing com- mittees. Chairmen of these committees plus the officers of the Council make up its executive committee. Among its accomplishments this year, the Council sponsored a Keep the Athletic Field Clean cam- paign. They also gave several after-school dances. Throughout basketball season the Council sold Beat buttons, which proved very popular. The Council has actively participated this year in the Philadelphia-Suburban Student Council Associa- tion. In addition, representatives have been sent to various schools of the surrounding territory to investigate their student government organization and general school problems. In this way we have gained many valuable suggestions for the better- ment of ur school. DEAll HI Til Greeted with enthusiastic applause, Dear Ruth” by Norman Krasna was presented as the first dramatic venture of the Junior Class in Upper Darby High. Through the unremitting efforts of an excellent publicity staff, great crowds thronged the auditorium on November 14 and 15, and the class treasury was augmented by approximately $500. Faithfully backed by a fine production staff and efficient make-up, costume, and properties committees and skillfully directed by Miss Frieda Reed, the thespians of the Junior Class turned out a grand piece of entertain ment. The successful production of Dear Ruth was an achievement of which the Class of 1949 should be justifiably proud. ' I THE Crr BLI { le and experienced direction Upper Darbys Show scored another huge production, staged by approximately members of all three classes, repre much time and effort dedicated by both and students. The show was well received by audiences which filled the auditorium to capacity both nights. Officiating in the capacity of ring master were George Miller, senior, and John Harkins, junior. To both is due credit for a splendid performance. Assisting them as circus barkers were Jay Kulp, Wally Lecher, and Bob Hotchkiss. Furthermore, recognition is owed to the people behind the scenes— the stage crew and make up committee. The proceeds of this production are contributed to a fund which will be used to establish a permanent war memorial. This year's circus theme provided for the exhibition of a variety of talents. The program opened with a grand parade passing in review before the audience. Featured were novelty dances, vocal solos, acrobatic acts, and comedy routines. The show was further enhanced by the charm of our vivacious Circus Queen, Marguerite Christine. Chris obtained this honor by receiving a majority of the votes cast by all students in their respective homerooms. In addition, the band lent a genuine circus atmosphere to the festivities. MAY DAY Each year, as the first clays of May bring warmer weather, people gather from miles around to witness this traditional Upper Darby celebration. Miy Day, one of the highest points of the year, is an important event be- cause it marks the close of the annual Purple and Gold color contest. On the day set aside for the exercises, there is a feeling of excitement in the air. The May Queen and her court, chosen by student ballot, arc arrayed in loveliness. Everywhere color captains and drill leaders are busy perform- ing various duties. Students dressed in the uniform of the day wait expectantly for the grand march to commence. The events of the afternoon are well known to all participants. After the teams have marched on the field, the May Queen is crowned, and the Maypole dance and drill are executed with precision. Then follow the games and contests which determine the victorious color team. Although May Day involves much time and effort, it is enjoyed and appreciated by one and all. One of the accomplishments of the Choral Club this year was the adoption of a constitution proposed by the executive committee. Among its many activities were Christmas and Easter Concerts, radio broadcasts, the Lion's Club Minstrel Show, and the sponsorship of the Steel Pier Frolic. Our orchestra also took part in the Christmas music program which is presented each year at the Junior High. Of the twelve students who were sent to the dis- trict orchestra, Bill Hester, a junior, was selected to attend the All-State Orchestra. The book stands as an account of general student activities for the current year, and in particular, it provides a permanent record of the entire senior class Producing a yearbook requires much work as well as pleasure. The Oak is compiled through the com- bined efforts of five staffs—namely, literary, art, photography, typing, and business. Coach Fred Loeb and assistant Joseph E. Rhile had nine returning lettermcn included with their thirty-three war riors. The squad, paced by co-captains Ken Jackson and Bill Padula, downed Radnor, Lansdowne, Cheltenham, duPont, and Haverford, tied Lancaster and Chester, and was defeated by Abington and Lower Merton. There were many thrills on the gridiron this year—a Jackson to Fair pass resulting in that all-important TD against Lancaster: Bill Padula'$ ninety-yard kick-off return against Lansdowne and his interception in the Lower Merion game for touchdowns: and passes from Jackson to Hoenstine that resulted in touchdowns against Radnor, Cheltenham, and duPont. U.D.’s near upset of undefeated Lower Merion was the team's high water mark of the season. Proving that we had a powerful team this year was the fact that Jackson, Padula, Hoenstine, and Dougherty made All-Suburban, while Higgins, Waters. The jay' vecs went scoreless against Chester, Lansdownc, and Abington, but tallied a touchdown and extra point against Lower Merion in their final game. Paul Meyers was the Royal who registered UD’s touch' down. This year’s squad consisted mostly of sophomores and was led by juniors Greg Bowan and Newton Wade, who were elected co-captains by their fellow players early in the season. The squad had quite a few returning lettermen, and although the Royal hooters lost their first two games, with more experience they subsequently played much better ball to win or tie most of their remaining games. Perhaps the most thrilling game of the year was the one with Bethlehem, when both teams were scoreless until the last few minutes when Ray Birmingham tallied. The squad of '48 wishes to express its grateful appreciation to Coach Westervelt, for her considerate and understanding coaching; and to their successors, the squad of '49, they wish the best of success. The season was terminated by the Purple and Gold contest, which was won by the Purples. Second-year varsity award winners Ruth Brooks, Captain Buzzie Fretz, and Susie Tillett. Dottie Wiltshire, a sophomore, was high scorer with 43 points to her credit, followed by another sophomore, Diana Leary, with 24 points. SPE E II A | SI'lk I. s The 1948 track squad, under the lead- ership of Roy Wolfgang, assisted by Harry Wike in the field events, and Murray Mil- ler in the running events, should have a fairly good season. The team will be small, so competition will not be too great except in the running events. It seems that Upper Darby will again be weak in the field as last year. Ed Foy will throw the javelin, and Jim Hardy will broad jump, but the other events have not been filled as yet. Running the mile will be a promising junior. Bill Armold, while Ernie Walker and Jack Muench will take the hurdles. George Miller, a senior who won his letter last year, will be running the quarter mile. Warren Bevan, a junior, will also be a threat in the dashes. Lower Mcrion and Norristown will have strong teams this year and will probably give the trackmen a hard battle for the District crown. EXECUTIVES OF 94U To the officers of the Class of 1948 we owe our gratitude and thanks for their loyal, unselfish service in leading our class through its last and most important year in high school. Active in football, wrestling, Hi-Y, and Student Council was the president of our class, Ray Higgins. Ray's competent leadership and friendliness won him the support of both the students and faculty. Assisting Ray this year was Fred Brown, class vice-president. Fred's varied interests included foot- ball, basketball, baseball, and Hi-Y. He also served as treasurer of the Choral Club. While conscientiously keeping the class records, our secretary, Francis Cara ns, had time to be active in numerous clubs—namely, A Cappella, Pleiades, Le Ccrclc Francais, Hi-Y, and Tay Wistalvan. Interested in soccer and a member of the All- Suburban soccer team this year was our treasurer Rodman Scace. Rod was also a member of the track team. Serving as a general governing board, the members of the senior executive committee meet weekly to discuss affairs pertinent to their own class. The com- mittee includes the class officers, the class advisers, and a representative from each home room. Many and varied are the duties of this senior group. Under its jurisdiction fall class financial problems, arrangements for the annual class party, and the senior final dance. In addition, the members choose the class gift to the school. This year, acting on the suggestion of our presi- dent, the committee formed several new organizations, such as the tutoring and the senior final boards groups, to insure greater efficiency in the handling of class activities. The executive group was instrumental also in arranging various assembly programs and in the selling of advertisements for the senior play. To the members of the executive committee goes our expression of gratitude for faithfully and capably fulfilling their many obligations and for their display of enthusiasm and class spirit. The brisk, efficient, business-like manner and cooperative spirit of Miss Pear! E. Garen are well known to the members of the class of 1948. Miss Garen is always ready to help us with the many confusing problems, particularly of our senior year. She assists the girls of our class, while Mr. Hoehlcr, her co-advisor, has jurisdiction over the boys. To- gether they advise the executive committee and super- vise class activities. For Miss Garen s splendid willingness, the class of 1948 expresses its grateful appreciation. It is a familiar sight to students of Upper Darby to see Mr. George Hoehler busily at- tending to his various duties as teacher and class advisor. No matter how busy Mr. Hoehlcr is, he always has time for a few words and a friendly smile for everybody. Although this is Mr. Hoehler's first assignment as class ad- visor, he has done an admirable job for the past three years in guiding us along our way. The class of 1948 wishes to thank Mr. Hoeh- ler for all of his unselfish services. THE YEARS Hinetyseven Through thfjr unfaltering devotion toward school and fellow students, these six people have been elected to receive the Service Award, one of Upper Darby's most cherished honors. They have proved themselves valuable in every phase of school life—student government, sports, dra- matics, publications, class government, class committees, and club activities. They have given unselfishly of their time and efforts in order that our schcx l might be worthy of our highest respect and deepest loyalty. To these six people, the three o'clock bell meant the end of classroom work and the begin- ning of school service. In the Acorn office, in the publica- tions office, on stage, on the athletic field, at club meetings, and at committee meetings they found all kinds of work to be done, and they were willing to try their hands at any task. To you, the upholders of Upper Darby's time-honored traditions, we say, Congratulations and best wishes!” VM1 Foremost in service to their school: Carolyn Bell, Joe Fusco, Mary Jane Struth, George Miller, Frances Carans, Ray Higgins. Ninety-eight These six honor students, the 1948 winners of the Scholarship Award, are worthy of our highest praise, for it is they and those who have preceded them in former years, who have upheld the high academic standards of Upper Darby High School. To you, the preservers of Upper Darby's maintained their high scholastic record through four years, have still managed to find time to distinguish themselves in school activities. Today, with so much stress laid upon the importance of a good high school education, we may feel doubly proud that these consistently fine students are representative of our school. Their names will be permanently recorded on the Scholarship Award Plaque, which, together with the Service Award Plaque, hangs in the front corridor of Upper Darby High School. To you, the preservers of Upper Darby's outstanding scholastic standards, the Class of 1948 extends its most respectful and grateful thanks. IIOI.
