IP 9II Hill III Introducing Oakie,” the sprightly little fellow above, who is going to escort you through some of the pages of your 1947 yearbook. Oakie, being an elf, is naturally full of playful fun and maybe that’s why we created him—to represent the Upper Darby student body as a whole, for we do have a wonderful time at high school. The Oak has attempted to put down in a permanent record all these good times, not only dances and plays, but classroom activities and sports also. Oakie hopes you enjoy the book and that in years to come it will bring back many memories of three wonderful, unforgettable years. L Four MR. LEWIS O. GOAS The Oak Literary Staff is dedicating our yearbook to the deans, Mr. Lewis O. Goas and Miss Zita E. Mallon, because of their constant and unselfish work for the benefit of the student body. Both are faculty advisors to Student Council, where their ever ready advice and opinions arc greatly appreciated. Mr. Goas, since his return from the service last April, has been occupied, not only with the duties as Dean of Boys, but with handling of the veterans’ affairs; however, his cheery smile and friendly hello” are always present. Miss Mallon, aside from her duties as Dean of Girls, handles many important tasks about the school. Her efficient management of the Welfare Fund cannot go unpraised, plus her able direction of book drives and other functions. Over half of the total enroll- ment seems to be aiming toward a college career. The Academic and Scientific cur- ricula comprise the two brandies of this course. The Academic concentrates on the foreign language and history subjects, while the Scientific Curriculum stresses subjects of a scientific nature. They may choose any one of the following curricula: Stenographic, Account' ing, Salesmanship, or General Business. Under the Salesmanship Course, a program of Distributive Education may be elected. This program enables a student to attend school for only half the day and gain prac' tical business experience by working the other half. The Arts and Crafts Course is de- signed primarily for those students who in- tend to enter a particular trade or business immediately after being graduated from high school. The courses offered are wide- ly varied, and a student may elect any one of five—namely, Art, Home Economics, Agriculture, Music, or Wood and Metal skills. The CLASS OF 1947 pauses to pay tribute to Miss Lillian E. Bock, teacher of mathematics, whose death in December, 1946, brought to an end a life devoted in service to boys and girls, twenty-one years of which have been spent in Upper Darby High School. Miss Bock had a marked interest in world problems and had looked forward to having an opportunity to serve as exchange teacher in some other country. This opportunity was realized last May, but her health did not permit her to complete her year's teaching assignment in England. She was able to return to her family in America before her death. She was a skillful classr x m teacher. She was genuinely enthusiastic and constantly alert. In departing she has left to us an inspiring spirit of willing service and faith- ful loyalty, which, in the fateful years that lie ahead, will nourish and enrich Upper Darby High School. mil ay it y The principal undertaking of the Board of Education this year has been the planning of the necessary improvements in the Upper Darby schools, which continue to maintain the high standards of which we are so proud. Twentydive thousand dob lars' worth of bonds were sold for the acquisition of additional land near the Junior and Senior High Schools and for the physical improvement of all the educational facilities in the community. An overwhelming majority of the citizens voted for the two million dollar bond issue, which was placed on the ballot for the enlargement of the Senior High Sch x)l. Among their many other accomplishments, the Board also approved the exchange of two teachers with English schools in order to broaden our cdu' cational scope. We arc indebted to the members of our School Board for their unselfish contributions to the better' ment of our educational facilities, and thus, the improvement of our whole community. Dr. Gcorjje Dilworth, President uriKiyviUMUip This has been an exceptionally busy year for our superinten- dent, Mr. John H. Tyson. A great part of his time and energy has been devoted to working out the difficulties and details of the plans for the new high school. Settlement for the condemned land is finally nearing completion. Mr. Tyson is happy that our athletic facilities will soon be expanded so that the recreational programs now operating will he able to function even more extensively. These programs, in which all school children in the district may participate, have his heartiest approval. In addition lie has provided for the extension of instru- mental music in the elementary schools, and is also eager to increase the use of visual education. We would like to express our appreciation to Mr. Tyson for his untiring efforts to enrich our schcx)l and community life. As THE YEARS will come and go, wc shall associate the happy moments of our high school days with the friendliness of our principal. Dr. Nancarrow, who thoroughly enjoys being with young people, is more than willing to listen to our talcs of woe and to offer hits of advice. Likewise, he enjoys hearing about our social life and school activities. He is especially interested in sports, because his outdoor hobbies are hunting and fishing. Although Dr. Nancarrow has only been with us four years, he has made many contributions to the school. He originated the idea for our annual AlhSchool Show, which has become practically a tradition. Our class thanks Dr. Nancarrow for his service—we only hope that we live up to his expectations. Among the many little known people who help make our school operate efficiently arc the secre' taries. They are occupied with keeping the many records which are necessary for the functioning of the administration. In addition to this important task, they willingly perform other jobs for the teachers and students alike. It is the secretaries who transcribe the scholastic and personal data of each high school senior to the colleges which request it. To these hard workers we wish to extend our thanks for their indirect aid in making our high school life more enjoyable. Left: Miss Dorothy Cole, Miss Walda J. This year there was a total of forty aspiring peda- gogues—one from Villanova College, three from the Drcxel Institute of Technology, nine from Temple University, and twenty-seven from the University of Pennsylvania. Each one is assigned to a “critic teacher, and every day has three classes, one free period, and two non-teaching periods such as infirmary, library, study hall, and attendance office. This schedule offers beneficial opportunities for both student and student teacher. WIACIII1 First Semester Cadet Teachers— First Row: Sophia Brandt, Marion Vogt, Angelina Bodano. ( A IP ■ V THANKS to our Cafeteria Director, Mrs. Knox, and her assistants. Upper Darby stU' dents arc a healthy and wcll'fed student body. The cafeteria workers have not only contin' ued giving us the best, wholesome food but have also introduced the new government sub' sidy lunch. With this plan the students were able to purchase a lunch which included all the vitamins and calories necessary for a well' balanced meal. Another feature of this plan was the reasonable cost of only twenty-two cents. With this new plan in effect, the menu was posted on the Morning Sheet each day. This speeded up the distribution of food in the cafe' tcria, for the students knew what they want' cd before they got in line. Therefore, the in' troduction of this system proved beneficial to both the school and the students. Top to bottom: Mr . The maintenance staff of the Upper Darby High School is to be greatly commend- ed for the remarkable and praiseworthy man- ner in which they keep the school building and grounds in condition. They work long and hard hours before and after school, and, despite a help shortage, do a good job. The staff has charge of the heating system, clean- ing the building, keeping the grounds in re- spectable condition, and doing any repair work necessary, such as painting and carpen- try. Mr. Buttcrworth, the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, not only has charge of the maintenance of the high school, but also manages the janitorial systems of the twelve other schools in Upper Darby. In addition to all this, he supervises the school buses and their schedules and routes. u A I IJ V Top to bottom: Main janitor Ed Wyatt looks after the boiler room. May Day is the climax of the year's rivalry be- tween the Purple and Gold color teams. Miller, Lecher, Martin MIMM CIVIMUIUI Since the Student Council is the only gov- erning body in the school, it has had a great respoiv sihility placed on its shoulders: the responsibility of fairly representing both the school and the students. The Council is composed of the presidents of all the homerooms and representatives of various school organizations. Under its Constitution it is divided into seven committees: service, publicity, emergen' cy, club, social, scholarship, and intcr'school rela- tions. Each of these committees elects a chairman, and these chairmen combine to form the Executive Committee of the Council. It is this committee's duty to meet and discuss some of the more import- ant problems brought up at the regular Student Council meetings. The Social Committee has been very active in ar- ranging after-school and after-basketball dances. These dances have provided many hours of enjoy- ment for the pupils, and at the same time have served as ways of earning money which will be used to buy National Honor Society keys and for various other worthy causes. One of the main activities of the Council, this year, was the collection of over 2,000 books, which were sent to Broadmcadows Prison to form a perm- anent library there. This drive was the first of its kind in Upper Darby and through the efforts of the Student Council proved to be a great success. Among its many other activities the Council has also organized a girls' swimming club which will add enjoyment to the lives of many girls. Under the capable guidance of Miss Zita Mal- lon, Mrs. Edna Danehower, and Mr. Lewis Goas, the Student Council, as a whole and in units, has worked hard to make our school more enjoyable and has spent a great amount of time and effort in promoting good will and efficiency through the school. It is truly a democratic form of self-govern- ment and has met with a highly successful year. Upper Darby’s athletes, through their enthusi- astic efforts, provided an abundance of excite- ment. The football team claimed the fall spot- light by tying for first place in the District I league race. The girls’ hockey team was also very successful. From these two teams we chose our sports representatives—namely, Betty Hilton, captain of girls’ hockey, and Tom Faulkner, co- captain of the football team. Completing his second season as Upper Darby's football coach, Fred Dutch Loeb directed the 1946 team to a successful finale, which resulted in a tie with Lower Merion for the Big Six Championship, marking the second time U. D. has merited this coveted title. The third leg on the Kelly Memorial trophy was won in the Lower Merion tilt and the clash with Lansdowne resulted in the retention of the traditional Old Oaken Bucket for another year. Maintaining an unscored upon record for the first three games, the Royals went on to trounce Lansdowne by a margin of two touchdowns. The Abington game proved a setback but drove U. D. on to greater efforts, as was evidenced in the Lower Merion upset. Marked by outstanding cheering and spirit in the stands and brilliant playing on the part of the team, Fred Loeb's Royals submerged the highly touted Aces on their own field. After hand' ing a disappointed, and undefeated Cheltenham team a 20-20 tie, the Royals marched on to P. S. Du Pont and the Dynamiters' initial defeat. Their coach, Ray McGraw, named Upper Darby the greatest flash team he had ever seen. However, the Royals met a determined and fighting Haverford clan for the Turkey-Day classic, and despite the ideal weather and field, which gave U. D.'s speedy backs, Padula and Faulkner, the advantage, the Fords held on for a 0-0 tie. FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Opp. U. D. Although the swimming team shared first place with Abington and Norristown in the District I. P.I.A.A. meet last year, they went through this season without winning any of their meets. The Upper Darby swimmers contributed all their efforts, but Lady Luck was not with them. Captain Donald Gerber and Manager August Nie- meyer believe that next year the team will com- pensate for this year's loss. Pat Ruane, a promis- ing sophomore, will probably bring laurels to the mermen. The highest score of 55.75 was made by Captain Gerber, while Roland Hughes finished with 32.52. The annual Purple-Gold meet was won by the Golds. SWIMMING SCHEDULE U.D. Opp. Southeast Catholic 32 34 P.S. Coach Carson J. Thompson under contract to the Yankees and now a scout in the summer for the Phillies, has returned to the coaching position he held before the war. Backing up the excellent pitching of Bob Burns and Bill Wilkins are two talented sophomores, Howard Hallet and Leon Pappa at first and third hascs respectively. Outstanding playing has also been shown by Captain Jack Simpson who holds up the shortstop position. The team won nearly all their opening games, rolling over Ycadon, Radnor and Lower Mcrion. IMfUhllit This year, as in years past, the girls' tennis team has had to work under very poor conditions. Regular practice has been almost inv possible because of the rain and the consequent poor con' dition of the courts. The team, however, has put up with these conditions and worked hard to overcome them. Although the girls, under the capable coaching of Mr. Paul E. Schwartz, lost their first two matches, they have shown possibility of finishing the seasons in pretty fair standing. r First Row: Frazier, Menden hall, Ide, Captain; Wall Smoker, Spaeth. Most of this year's squad were underclassmen, so the coach predicts bright pros- pects for next spring. Wally Lecher, a junior, was number one man on the team, while Bob MacLean and Burt Smith, seniors, held second and third places re- spectivcly. For the first time in many years, Upper Darby is unable to put a strong team on the field. It is hard to remember when the Royals have not been serious contenders for all the honors offered. However, with the return of Coach Roy Wolfgang from the armed services, he, with the capable assistance of Mr. Harry Wikc, will start building a team that will give plenty of competition to all comers. We have the nucleus of a good team with Co-captains Bob Weaver and Don Sykes and the other three returning lettermen—Jack La- Fountain, George Miller, Don Evans. Mm M The physical education department organizes clashes between intramural teams for those Upper Darby sports-lovers who arc unable to play junior varsity and varsity sports. Under the direction of Miss Marion Scott and Mrs. Ann Westervelt, many girls participated enthusiastically in hockey, basket- ball, and softball last year. Teams were formed by the various gym classes and the groups from 4-A period seemed to have most of the winning combina- tions. Boys' intramural sports, directed by Mr. Herbert Herzog, included soccer, basketball, base- ball; and their teams were formed by the homerooms. In addition to providing valuable recreation for many of us, our intramural program encourages good-sportsmanship under the strain of keen competition. Top Left: Blair Wagner and Bob Coppadge fight for the ball. Top Right: Pat Hoffman races after the ball as teammates Margie Wood and Muriel Roswell follow. Bottom Left: Joanne McKinley takes an unsuccessful swing at the softball. Bottom Right: Tom Sailor tags a fellow player out. Don Sykes and Margie Anderson, as is the case with all members of the class of 1947, have been looking forward to the red letter day, June 13. As the day of graduation, it means much more than just another Friday, the Thirteenth.” It will be both the culmination of our high school life and a true commencement of the happy fu- ture which lies ahead. HUIMft CUM AITIMli Never to be forgotten are our two amiable class advisors, who have helped us so generously and unceasingly over the ups and downs of three years of high school. Few of us realize what a tedious job it is to be an advisor of a class. Sophomore year—the maga- zine campaign and sophomore party keep the ad- visors on the go. Junior year—the class play holds the limelight with the advisors supervising ticket sales and committees. Of course the senior year is the busiest, for then all the problems of graduat- ing almost 600 students confront these two. On the side they must talk to each and every one of us who fails a subject, and they must always be ready with advice and encouragement for all. Mr. Boyd and Miss Chrisman have done all this to perfection. Our class is certainly tops and the credit goes to our two wonderful advisors, Mr. Boyd and Miss Chrisman. Left: Mr. Boyd checking on our graduation gowns in the senior office. Right: Mr. Boyd looking very serious as he reads the morning sheet to one of hi classes. Left: Miss Chrisman measuring a senior girl for her cap and gown. Right: Miss Chrisman preparing to have her picture taken. MISS CHARLOTTE S. CHRISMAN Tony Orlando, Vice-President; Don Sykes, President; Tom Sailor, Treasurer; Margie An- derson, Secretary. CUM IPPICIH In assuming the duties of Class President, Don Sykes presides over Executive Committee meetings, serves on secondary committees of that organization, and helps decide important Class questions. He is assisted by Tony Orlando, Vice-President, who is an active participant in class affairs and serves on many secondary committees. As Secretary of the Class, Margie Anderson writes the minutes and Class correspondence and keeps its records. Tom Sailor, Treasurer, is in charge of the financial affairs of the class. When we chose these people as our own class officers, we were confident that they would capably assume the re- sponsibilities of wise leadership and faithful service. They have more than fufilled our expectations. Our pride in each of our officers can be surpassed only by our sincere gratitude for tasks well-done. EXICIVITICtUUIMIIE The Executive Committee consists of a repre- sentative from each senior homeroom, the class offi- cers, and the class advisors. They meet each week on Thursday during the last half of 4B period. The function of the Executive Committee is to take care of all financial matters and other affairs concerning the Senior Class. Some of these are selecting the class gift, helping to secure the assem- bly programs, and making arrangements for the Class Party and Senior Final. About the biggest problem the Committee tackled this year was a campaign to keep the lunchroom clean. They assigned two tables to each homeroom and made the members of that homeroom respon- sible for cleaning the tables. The Executive Committee must be commended for the splendid execution of their duties which made it possible for the Senior Class to have a memorable Senior Year. First Row: Shaw, T. This is one of the highest and most coveted honors a senior can receive. This year’s choice has indeed been an admirable one. These three boys and three girls you see here are outstanding—in music, dramatics, sports, student government, publications, class government and class committees. These are the people who aren’t afraid to give a lot for others—the people who are willing to try when a job pre- sents itself—the people who have taken the initiative and have helped guide our class through three years of high school. The class of 1947 is truly proud and greatful for the service of these six out- standing classmates. Bob Sailor, Sylvia Jones, Bob MacLean, Ethel Morris, Jack Simpson, and Jeanne Shaw. One Hundred Ten ICINUMIII The class of 1947 is proud to present the six people who have received the Scholarship Award. They represent the best in Upper Darby for in addition to their high scholastic standing these people have participated in extra-curricular activities that have taken up much of their time. Today education is more vital than ever before and these people have had the foresight to set high goals and live up to them. Their names will be engraved on the plaque, which was presented by the class of 1933. The plaque is located in the front hall of our school and it preserves the names of those who honor Upper Darby Senior High School. Has- Auuiwi.it nty bum It is with SINCERE appreciation that wc acknowledge the help of the following firms and individuals in pro- ducing the 1947 Oak. The Lots Photo-Engraving Com- pany, as usual, has given us excellent service and splendid workmanship. Our long continued relationship with the Lucdccke Studios has been pleasant and profitable. We would pay particular tribute to Mr. Francis Lucdccke for his excellent work in photographing the seniors of our school. Another fiiend of long-standing is the Clark Printing House. They have pulled us out of many a bad spot. Our especial thanks are due Mr. Nason Clark for his untiring effort in seeing that the 1947 Oak is one of the best to reach the many friends of Upper Darby High School.
