lELICf IMI TO PEACE, fragile and priceless, we dedicate this book, because we know that the security and prosperity of peace arc every man’s right. In order for any of us to have peace in these chaotic times, it must be universal, the property of every nation. Peace docs not come with the cessation of war, it does not even come with the cessation of hate, but only through the love and tolerance of each individual for the citizens of every part of the world. The fundamental qualities of sincerity and generosity are even more needed internationally than individually because there is so much more chance of misunderstanding. It is important that the United States, an established leader among nations, preach and practice these ideals. We, the people most directly concerned, must not wait for our government officials to take the lead, for they are primarily our representatives. It is up to the citizens, especially the younger and less prejudiced people, to present this idea to the world in the most convincing way, by living it. We must not be narrow-minded. We must think in terms of the world, for national boundaries are no longer walls to protect us, but only barriers to that understanding so indispensable in co-operation. But it is just as important that we destroy all the little boundaries that cause silly wasteful quarrels between states, schools, cliques. We are effective nationally largely through our own every-day conduct and that of the millions like us. If this behavior is above reproach, the nation cannot go wrong. And so the theme of this yearbook is the handshake, symbol of friendship and recognized equality. May we always remember the ideas for which it stands, and their importance to all mankind.
