i Z-1' s QTA HEN we think of the chaos which reigns throughout the world and of total war's devastating carnage, we are very grateful that we are Americans and that our fair land is unblem- ished by enemy bombs. Many thought that the yearbook should be sus- pended for the duration because of wartime con- ditions. We feel, how- ever, that a yearbook is more important and significant this year than in many years gone by. This year is the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of our high school, an event worthy of permanent commemoration. The fifty-year his- tory of Upper Darby High School has been one of constant growth. The first graduating class in 1896 numbered only five. In 1917, a new build- ing was constructed and by 1940, the graduating class had increased to 552. During this period, Upper Darby's population grew from 9000 in 1920 to 61,000 in 1940. Although we of Upper Darby have not felt the war as drastically as some of our compatriots, its eiects are ever-present in our daily life. Ra- tioning, scrap drives, and air raid alerts have kept us constantly aware of the task which we must successfully accomplish. Our jobs on the home front seem minor indeed when compared with the job which lies ahead of our brave servicemen. Already, among the armed forces, are a number of our classmates who are defending Old Glory in many parts of the world. Their departure has brought the reali- ties much closer to all of us. We all hope and pray for their safe return. In the planning, arranging, and compiling of this Oak of 1944, we have been confronted with many problems as to its contents. In all of these problems we have tried to do what we thought would be of interest to the greatest number of people, and we sincerely hope that in so doing, we have not slighted any person or organization. lf, f AS OUR high school has grown during the past fifty years, so, too, has the respect and esteem for our high school's first principal grown throughout Upper Darby and surrounding communities. The debt of gratitude which each of us, as students of the Upper Darby High School, owes to her can easily be appreciated when we think of the tremendous task which faced her in organ- izing the high school. Her successful completion of this task was proven by the excellent manner in which the school was conducted under her direction. Throughout her entire career as a high school teacher, prin- cipal, and librarian, she was a constant inspiration to Upper Darby students and an exemplary symbol of American womanhood. In sincere appreciation of her tireless eHorts and of her many contributions to the community, we, the class of 1944, dedicate this yearbook to MISS ELISABETH D. TURNER Five
