vn eseating Which is to DEDICATION WE, THE class of 1943, are greatly indebted to you, Miss Chrisman, and to you, Mr. Boyd, in so many ways. For three years our problems have been your prob' lems, our disappointments have been your disappointments, and our achievements have been your achievements. Some of us have had the opportunity of coming in close relationship with you, and thus finding out what really grand people you are. However, we all have felt the cheery warmth of your smile, Miss Chrisman, and the inspiring influence of your enthusiasm, Mr. Boyd. Under your care' ful guidance you have given to our class the memory of three happy and successful high school years. There is little we can say to convey our appreciation of your willing, your cheerful, and your entirely unselfish service to us. In order to express in some small way our gratitude, we, your class, sincerely dedicate this 1943 edition of The Oak to you. A MISS CHARLOTTE CHRISMAN MR. Here we introduce two representative Upper Darby students that shall follow us through the pages of this book, helping us to knit together our varied and widespread interests. We hope that you shall come to think of them, not so much as individuals, but as embodying all the fine things we find at Upper Darby. SS DAILY jQJPPER DARBY High School students come from so many various directions that there is no spot of interest that all pass daily. Sooner or later, however, we all find our way to the Sixty' ninth Street section, the great shopping and trans' portation center for many thousands of people. Here are many familiar scenes, such as those pictured on these pages,—students leaving a crowded trolley. West Chester Pike minus the “before the war” traffic, students crossing the street on their way to the movies and stores of this great area. Ten A Typical American IIU.1I SCHOOL PPER DARBY represents what authors term a typical American community. The population is around 60,000; therefore, the district is neither too large nor too small. In all such communities the school plays an important part, and so it is with Upper Darby. The courses offered at Upper Darby Senior High School are varied; they are the Business, the Arts and Crafts, the Experience, and the College Pre' paratory. Of the pupils enrolled in the latter, 75 per cent go to college. We are particularly fortunate in having an excellent faculty of 84 members. Upper Darby is a very large school. In the sophomore class alone there are 686 students, then the junior class with 616, and 513 seniors, making a grand total of 1,815. The homes from which these people come are what we might term the upper middle class, for they are neither poor nor very wealthy. All in all we realize that it takes more than just a building to make a school, for it is the spirit of the students and faculty which makes Upper Darby High School the splendid school that it is. •art. ac tive: sc iiool no a hi JT IS not often we, as students, have the chance to show our gratitude to the Board of Education. They volun teer their services and too often go without our thanks. Their work has been made doubly difficult because Upper Darby has grown so rapidly it has been difficult to acconv modate so many students. This situation has been some what alleviated by the construction of the new Garrcttford School. Truly the community can be proud of our school board—so active and so ready to serve. Fifteen It is a rare person who has no other interest outside of his regular work. Dr. Sampson is not this rare person. If you want to see his eyes light up, just ask him about his farm. He will talk just as learnedly to you about seed potatoes and fine livestock as he will about educational pro- cedures. IIIK. WILLIAM C. SAMI'SOA For the past seventeen years Dr. William C. Sampson has been superintendent of the Upper Darby School system. He has been a backstage prompter in our rise through the grades. During these years Dr. Sampson has put his time and effort into the betterment of our school life. He has ably conducted the schools in Upper Darby through many years of peace. Now after a year at war he has wisely guided us in our efforts toward victory. We have been his concern for twelve years and owe him our heartiest thanks and appreciation. Sixteen Mr. Tyson is a man of many in- terests. He likes golf, and plays a good game. He loves to paint, not with a camel’s hair brush but with a good five-inch affair on the side of a house. Any fine day now, in the evening, you may see him assidu- ously exterminating the weeds in his Victory garden. 11C. .IOIIX II. TYSO Through the twenty-four years he has served as principal, Mr. Tyson has never failed to lead the students in the proper way. He always has uppermost in his heart and mind, Upper Darby and her students. His interest is responsible for many of the fine things we have to remember at U. D. There are so few of us who know him personally, yet we all know of his kindness and pleasing personality. As an outstanding remembrance at Upper Darby, Mr. Tyson ranks high as a friend of the students and school. Seventeen KACrLTY (Opposite page) ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Edith Gaukrodgcr Matilda Bailey R. FIIIF.MIUY SFHVIUF VFTENTIMES one's thoughts of high school center around the building, the faculty, and the showy things, such as athletic events, dances, and plays. We sometimes fail to remember that deep within this institution, our high school, there are those who play a tremendously important part without which the functional activities of the school could not continue. Much of the smooth operation of all types of school routine is only possible through the efficiency of the school secretaries on whose shoulders rest the responsibility of keeping accurate and quickly accessible records of enrolments, grades, courses, and personal history. They do much to smooth the way for both the teacher, student, and administration of the school. They must keep records of inventory, order supplies, receive telephone calls, answer parents' inquiries, make statistical reports, and help to supply mimeograph copies of notices of events and school activities To the present loyal corps of secretaries of Upper Darby High School we owe much for the efficiency and freedom from friction in our three years of school. UPPER DARBY is fortunate to have with her for a part of each semester student teachers from various surrounding institutions—namely, the University of Penn' sylvania, Drexel Institute of Technology, and Temple University. While the student teachers are gaining experience, we profit by receiving the newest ideas in education and also any special instruction which the cadets are always so willing to give. The cadet teachers do much helpful work in the library and the attendance office. There are innumerable other services which they perform that associate them more closely with the school, and the students more closely to them. We are greatly indebted to the student teachers for the fine work they have done, and for the little “extra” things so valuable to student life. T wentythree TilEV ALSO SKI!YE JN PAYING tribute as we have done on previous pages to faculty, students, and men in our armed forces we must not forget those who serve us daily in many small ways. They are the first to enter the building and the last to leave. The groups of which I speak are the janitors and the women who work in the cafeteria. Whenever there are “after school teas and ban' quets for our various clubs and other organizations we can always count on the cheery cooperation of Mrs. Knox and her staff. We rely on them too to satisfy the hungering desires of many Upper Darby students who throng the counter at lunch time. That, in itself, is a big job. A debt of gratitude is also owed to the janitors. They not only maintain neatness throughout the building but cooperate in all possible ways with our school plays and assemblies, thus giving us many good times. These members of the school service staff, by their kindness and cooperation have made our school life easier, brighter and more pleasant. May our thanks be expressed to them not in mere words but in heart' felt appreciation. Mr. Butterworth at the Garrettford dedica- tion . . . Twenty-five ACTIVITIES Music, clubs, publications, plays,—all that goes to make up the whirl of extra-curricu- lar activity at Upper Darby. One of the fine things the school did this year was to help boys and girls to locate in some useful wartime activity. VOCATIONAL INFORMATION A IIIV L IK SI FIE I) CLUB ACTIVITY AT OUTSTANDING in any high school's curricu- lum arc the extra-curricular activities. The clubs are an important part of these activities. Many different types of clubs are offered at Upper Darby,—library, dramatic, scientific, language and ones that deal with sports or games in one way or another. Faculty members give valuable aid in sponsoring the various clubs. The literary clubs arc ones that concern them- selves with poetry, literature, and plays. During the year they study and talk of the authors and books. The members attend a play usually once a year. The scientific clubs are for those who are inter- ested in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine and other such things. The dramatic clubs have planned and produced plays for the members of the armed forces. They also present plays to the three classes in their assem- blies. The language clubs arc valuable in promoting a friendly feeling toward the foreign nations. Through these clubs the students become more interested in the language because they learn of the people and their customs. The Riding Club, Fencing Club, Table Tennis, Rilie Club, and the Archery Club further the inter- est ar.d ability of the students in those different fields. The First Aid and Social Service Club, and the Beaux Arts, although they are very different, both contributed much to the war effort. The First Aid girls did work in several hospitals and also in the school infirmary. The Beaux Arts members made numerous posters for civilian defense work and other war work in the community. This year the Hi-Y, both girls' and boys,' did much for war work activities. During the year the boys sponsored the collection of tin cans. The girls made an afghan of knitted squares and also spon- sored a drive for silk and nylon stockings. Although we have a great many clubs, they are well organized from the beginning. When interest is first created for a club in one certain field, those interested must get a faculty member willing to be their sponsor. The sponsor and group, working together, must then work up a charter for the pros- pective club, and also a name must be decided upon. After the charter is drawn up it is presented to the Student Council. A special committee of the Coun- cil would then cither approve and pass the charter and club, or reject it. After the charter is accepted by the Council, the group has a right to call itself a club” then. We are pleased with and proud of our clubs, and we hope that they will carry on to greater heights the work for which they were organized. RIFLE CLUB EMBERS of the Rifle Club, under the able supervision of Messrs. Wood, Billingslea, and Morris, can be found nearly every day up in the school's attic, blast- ing away at the distant targets. At the club's first meeting during the fall, it was decided that the team would be open to members of the club only and practice would begin immediately, but would not be held every day. This restriction was necessary because of the shortage of ammunition. As in former years, the club is a member of the National Rifle Association. rm:i( iiakhy TAY WISTALVAN 'J'HE Tay-Wistalvan is a club for girls who are interested in the many types of literature. It is under the sponsorship of Miss Weimer, who has ah ways given friendly guidance and leadership. Outstanding in the activities of the club are the trips to the theatre to see some well-known plays and the tea which is given by the members for their mothers. One of the oldest and most popular clubs, the name of Tay-Wistalvan was derived from four au- thors “Tay” from Taylor, “Wist” from Wister, “Al“ from Alcott, and “Van” from Van Dyke. BEAUX ARTS 'pHE Beaux Arts Club under the advisership of Miss Elizabeth Kingsley meets each Tuesday in Room 217. The purpose of this club is to afford those students artistically inclined a chance to sup- plement their regular art class work. In tunc with the trend of times this club has sponsored a poster contest on war conservation. We have introduced two new activities: a doggie-roast at Naylor's Run and a War Effort Art Service. This Service, under the leadership of Keith Culver- house, Beaux Arts' Secretary, makes posters, or per- forms other art service free of charge to various civic leaders and organizations in the community. DRAMUS CLUB JN 1925 the Dramus Club was organized by stu- dents interested in singing, dancing, and acting. They were given an opportunity to display their talent in an operetta given annually. Last year this was replaced by variety shows given to the students. Unfortunately, this year club activities have been limited by the illness of Mr. Haupt, the club sponsor. Finally, a new sponsor was obtained in Miss Kumjan, and it is expected that the excellent activities of the club will be resumed. CLITUS AXII FIRST AID AND SOCIAL SERVICE CLUB 'pHE First Aid and Social Service Club was or- . ganized eight years ago by a group of girls inter- ested in nursing and social service work. The club this year is making bandages for civilian defense, and checking vaccination records. The members also take charge of the infirmary when Mrs. Wolstcn- holme, the club's adviser, is absent. The outside activities include trips to various hospitals and insti- tutions which interest the members. A spring picnic, at which the officers for the fol- lowing year are announced, closes the season for the club. PLEIADES JNDER the energetic guidance of Mrs. Groome and Mr. Stermer, the Pleiades is glowing more brilliantly than ever. Taking in a large number of would-be stars, the club has really gone places. Their fall play scored a big success and for the annual Christmas play, Mrs. Groome produced Christopher's Candle, a real piece of art. Lots of talent and fun made up a super party at Christmas time. When better plays are written, Pleiades will give them. COMMERCE CLUB EMBERS of the Commerce Club consist of stu- dents whose main interest lies in the business world. By contributing their services to the faculty as secretaries, many senior girls have gained valu- able experience in the field of business. This year, the club's activities have been con- ducted by Miss Richards as sponsor and Bill Nyborg as president. A doggie roast was held in the fall and new members initiated, but because of the war it is uncertain whether the club will be able to hold its spring picnic at Valley Forge and continue with the publication of an annual newspaper. rIKTIKs HIPPOCRATES 'J'HE Hippocrates Society, named for the father of Medicine,” is a club for those interested in becoming medical doctors. Meetings are held twice a month under the guidance of Miss Sommerfield, at which times the latest developments in the field of medical sciences are discussed. Because of the fact that many of the hospitals arc understaffed and cannot accommodate visitors, the most interesting phase of club activities has been curtailed. However, a trip was made to the Penn' sylvania Hospital where the electron microscope, one of the few in the world, was seen and an operation was witnessed. LIBRARY CLUB 'pHE Library Club, under the capable leadership of Mrs. Messick, offers a splendid opportunity to those who wish to learn something about library work and have a desire to be of service to the school. The members work in the library one period every other week checking books, repairing and putting them away, and keeping the shelves in order. The outstanding events of the year include the doggie roast in the fall, a Christmas party, and most import tant is the Mother and Daughter Banquet at the conclusion of the school year. AERO CLUB T'HIS year, the project of the Aero Club is to build scale model planes for the Navy Depart- ment. Since the project has begun, they have made about three hundred of these planes. This work is under the able supervision of Mr. Geycr of the Shop Department. The active sponsor is Mr. Paul La Cates, who became sponsor during Mr. Howell's absence. They have had several speakers about planes, both private and commercial, in this war. The members are very much interested in aviation, and most of them are in the pre-flight aeronautics course. CLIUS AXII ALGETRARCA CLUB AT the first meeting of the Algetrarca Club, spoiv sored by Miss Bock, it was agreed that the club lie limited to seniors this year. This was deemed necessary because senior mathematics was needed in the subject chosen for the year. This project, the study of air and marine navigation, was suggested by Miss Bock as an excellent opportunity for basic instruction for later military training and was found exceptionally interesting. Aided by Mr. Twoes' talks on radio navigation, and instruction in the use of the slide rule, the club members learned about many of the intricacies of navigation and higher mathematics. LEEUWENHOEK rjpHE Leeuwenhoek Club, named for the father A of the microscope, was founded in 1932 with Mr. Harer as sponsor and with the purpose of providing interested boys and girls with further chances of work in biology and the preparation of microscope slides. Mr. Neff took over the sponsorship in 1936. Among the clubs services to the school are the scr- vicing of microscopes and the preparation of micro- scope slides for the Biology Department. The club has many activities such as field trips to various hospitals and scientific institutions and has enter- tained guest speakers for its members. For the past year it has been a member of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science. FRENCH CLUB t E Ccrclc Francais is one of the largest clubs in our school and meets on the second Thursday of the month, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Dale and Miss Chrisman. The purpose of the club is to study and become better acquainted with the language, customs, and people of France. The meetings arc conducted entirely in French, and by this it tries to enable its members to speak French more correctly and fluently. They strive to provide enjoyable pro- grams for the members by presenting plays, puppet shows, songs and dances. MM I ETI ES THE LATIN CLUB 'J’HE Latin Club, under the sponsorship of Miss Noble, was started in 1930 with the purpose of promoting a better understanding of the Roman life and background and its application today, as well as its contributions to our modern civilization. In a meeting once a month, members arc entertained by programs consisting of talks, slides, songs in Latin, or short plays. Special events of the year are trips sponsored by the Club to different museums and other places of interest on Roman life. LA SOCIEDAD PANAMERICANA T A Sociedad Panamericana, under the leadership of Miss Goodman and Mr. Clugston, was formed to promote a keener interest and good neighbor policy between the United States and South Amer' ica. Although it is a recently formed club, it has in' creased greatly, the membership numbering about one hundred. This large membership is due to the increased interest in South America and to the spread of the Spanish language. Such things as movies about Spanish speaking countries, songs in Spanish, interesting speakers, and games have held the interest of the members during the year. GERMAN CLUB 'J'HE German Club was organized primarily to help A its members become acquainted with German customs, and to enable them to speak the language more fluently. Under the sponsorship of Miss Grunberg, the meetings are held on Monday. The members speak only in German, and participate in games and projects which show some phase of German life. Each member is given an opportunity to enter into these activities. The three main events of the year are a doggie roast in the fall, a Christmas party, and a banquet which closes the clubs season. r lt it s BOYS’ BOWLING CLUB 'J’HE Boys Bowling Club this year consists of A sixteen teams with elected officers, which bowl every Monday afternoon. This group, which was organized in 1940, has advanced rapidly and is under the sponsorship of Mr. Geyer, who gives the boys pointers on how to improve their game. There were no matches with neighboring schools, but the club again had its Father and Son Tournament with awards bought by the club. With the dues cob lected at each meeting the club holds a banquet at the end of the year. GIRLS’ BOWLING CLUB 'THE Girls' Bowling Club has for its members sixty peppy, enthusiastic bowlers who bowl every Monday at the Lansdownc Bowling Alleys. Miss Nan Scott, the adviser, has supplied the girls with keen competition by dividing the club into teams. This year, because of the poor facilities of trans- poration, the club ended its activities late in Janu- ary. However, one of the year's highlights which was still maintained even with war time obstacles was the bowling meet with the Boys' Bowling Club. THE RIDING CLUB 'THE Riding Club, meeting once a week under the A capable directorship of Miss Kerr and Mrs. Mcs- sick, gives an opportunity for those students, both boys and girls, interested in horseback riding. There arc classes for both beginners and the more advanced groups. Members may earn their club pins by rid- ing at least ten times during one semester. The club has been a popular organization of the school since 1935. During good weather, the club members ride cross-country on any one of three or four trails, and in the spring, supper rides arc held. ClKTIE S ARS POETAE 'T HE Ars Poetac Club has a membership of thirty- five girls, who meet the third Monday of each month under the advisorship of Miss Merle I. Koch. Studying poetry in all its forms and acquainting the girls with the poets themselves are the two main purposes of the club. Each year a scrapbook of poems is made and given to the children in a near- by hospital. The years events terminate with a Mother and Daughter Tea held in the spring. ARCHERY CLUB TJNDER the capable leadership of Miss Garen, the Archery Club is one of the newer clubs of the school. During the warmer days of the year, the club meets outside to improve their skill and technique. Most of the meetings during the winter are held indoors and the members are taught the initial principles of the game. All the dues of this club go to the bettering of their equipment. The Archery Club has given much pleasure and recrea- tion to its members. FENCING TO anyone who is unfortunate enough to have a A locker in the second floor south corridor, the activity of the fencing club is evident. As a result of this activity the fencing team, consisting of Bill Klaus, Dean Arden, and Sam Cooke, with Arthur Metzger as alternate, has won several meets during the season The high point of the season was the defeat of Northeast by a score of seven to two. Lower Mcrion and Havcrford, the only two subur- ban schools fenced, were also defeated. Because of the absence of one or more team mcmcbers Upper Darby lost to Benjamin Franklin and Central High Schools by close scores. M IIS AXII BOYS’ H I - Y JJfNDER the able leadership of John Boyle, the Boys' Hi-Y has been very active this year. Their aid in procuring transportation for the ath' letic teams, in delivering baskets during the Christ' mas Welfare Drive and the transportation of heavy articles for the scrap metal drive are a few of their services. The Hi-Y-an Hop, sponsored annually by the Boys Hi'Y, was very successful and enjoyed by all who attended. The Boys’ Hi'Y would like to express its appre- ciation to Mr. Thompson for volunteering as ad- viser for the short period before he was inducted into the Naval Air Corps, and to Mr. Diehl for his loyalty and continued service as adviser. His pati- ence and geniality have been deeply appreciated. GIRLS’ HI-Y rjpHE Girls' Hi-Y, one of the oldest and most popu- A lar clubs in Upper Darby, tries to serve the school and students whenever possible. Its membership is based on scholarship, character and service, and su- pervised by the efficient sponsor, Miss Gaukrodger. The Girls' Hi-Y takes charge of the Information Desk, Lost and Found, and they often act as ushers at various school functions. Although this year they have been unable to sponsor their usual Sport Ban- quets. Teas, and Dinners they have substituted projects in the war interest such as knitting blankets for the Red Cross and sponsoring a Silk Stocking Drive. STEINMETZ SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY 'J'HE Steinmctz Society was the first of the school's extra curricular clubs. Founded in 1927, under the sponsorship of Mr. Oerlcin, it has faithfully fol- lowed its motto Science, Service, and the School. The club is primarily for boys interested in the fur- ther pursuit of their particular branch of science and has participated in backstage work, photog- raphy, and in many other services for the school. Mr. Remley, sponsor since 1935, because of the in- creased burden of new duties, has passed the spon- sorship on to the able biologist, Mr. Lower, who has returned this year to Upper Darby. This year the Society has given several interesting science assem- blies, but the boys have dropped many of the usual activities and trips because of the war situation. The Steinmctz Society is a member of both the Pennsyl- vania Junior Academy of Science and Science Clubs of America. SOCIETIES DEBATING pHE U. D. scrappers, under the expert coaching of Mr. Boyd, finished a successful season of two wins, one tie, and one loss. Although, somewhat hampered by his duties as senior class adviser, Mr. Boyd, with the assistance of Mr. Wolfe, managed to turn out a team of “braintrusts which now stands at the head of the league. The team was slow in getting under way this year because of the difficulties of transportation, and two schools, Rad' nor and Lansdowne withdrew from competition. However, the season ended in a blaze of glory as both the affirmative and negative teams triumphed over the almost invincible Lower Merion. Now, standing at the head of the league, and with four promising juniors, the team for next year shows every promise of success. CHESS CLUB 'J'HE Chess Club, which was founded eleven years A ago, gives those in Upper Darby interested in the game of strategy the opportunity to display their skill. The club was sponsored by Mr. Twoes until he left for the armed forces, at which time Miss Grun' berg took over, with Jim Nicholson as president. Some years ago, Upper Darby took part in inter' scholastic competition, but the league has been dis- banded, and club members have matches among themselves. WORLD AFFAIRS FORUM rJ'HE World Affairs Forum has been most active x and interesting this year, not only to its menv hers but also among the student body and conv munity organizations. Various members talked in several homerooms and the club provided programs of current interest for assemblies. Members attended and participated in several engrossing Temple con' ferences. These meetings offered vital material which furnished the club with many points for lively discussions. The major event for the interested stu- dents was the Current Affairs Test issued by Time which brought out many students of all the classes. i -on mi: students IIV THE STUDENTS CTUDENT government in Upper Darby falls into three classifications, the Monitors, the Tribunal, and the Student Council. Eleven boys and eleven girls are elected three times throughout the year to serve as Monitors. They have as their duties the maintenance of neat' ness in the halls and cafeteria. Twice throughout the year two boys and two girls are elected to serve on the Tribunal, the judiciary organization of the school. Their duty is to judge all cases brought before them by the board of moni' tors. A new system was introduced this year; the student head of the Tribunal is now called the Judge with the Law Secretary and Process Server under him. The largest of all these organizations is the StU' dent Council which has for its members each home room president and representatives from various school activities. The Student Council formulates all the school laws which govern us. This year's Council's main activity was the sponsorship of sev- eral after school dances which took the place of the dances previously held after basketball games. Those who serve on any of these groups help to make Upper Darby High School a better school for both teacher and student. From Grandpa Vanderhof down, the people were individualists. They did as they pleased and no questions asked. The success of the play may be attributed to Miss Mowry's tireless coaching, and the opportunity for sclf'C.xpression afforded in those “character” parts. Numerous hidden talents were discovered among the members of the senior class who lived their parts on stage and off. For a hilarious six weeks' period fireworks and masks were created; Russian, Southern and drunken dialects cultivated; ballet steps practiced to faltering xylophone accompaniment; snakes and kittens cob lccted; typewriters and printing presses operated, and love scenes enacted. During the long hours of rehearsals many practb cal jokes were played, new friendships made and old tics strengthened in an atmosphere of cooperation and team work. With members of the cast screaming down the aisles and dashing up to knock on an imaginary door, the audience was in a state of delicious terror bordering on hysteria. Donald Garson, the Rochester of Upper Darby, was the audience's special delight until he became the villain. “Willie Whitman relieved some tense situations with his stuttering and Dave Thomas put everyone in a panic with his grease painted hands and sepulchral tones. Fort -thrce A Day in May • • NE of the loveliest of all Upper Darby tradi- tions is the May Day ceremony, known far and wide throughout this and neighboring communities. Even in these war days, it was considered so im- portant as a morale builder that it was retained. Those who come from far and wide to see the festivities tell us that it is unrivaled in high school ranks. This year the observance took on a slight military flavor, with the V for Victory over the May Queen's throne and with the students march- ing on the field in a V shape. We hope that nothing will happen in the years to come to spoil this fine old custom. The May Queen and her ten attendants together with the two train-bearers and the crown-bearer. WITH HAMI and ORCHESTRA 'J'HE orchestra's activities are centered in several outlets other than those immediately within the school. They combine in an annual concert with Lansdownc High's orchestra, and have entertained assembly groups from the junior high school. Under the direction of David D. M. Fortyscven Choral dull Convenes ecT'LL see you in 126!” is a familiar phrase to every member of the Choral Club, the largest and most popular organization in the school. Under the supervision of its cooperative executive commit' tee, this year's performances were highly common dablc. Combined with the A Cappella the three hundred and sixty-two members of the Choral Club participated in the Annual Sacred Christmas Con cert, the Delaware County Bond Rally, the Spring Patriotic Music Festival, and the combined Lions' Club Minstrel Show and Steel Pier Frolic. The pro- cecds from the MinstrcbFrolic were given entirely toward scholarships awarded to seniors. Dr. Clyde R. Dengler, the director, is the real guiding spirit of the Choral Club. Besides being president of the Upper Darby Lions' Club and the director of six other choral groups, his enthusiastic interest and participation in all the Choral Club ac tivities has promoted the club to that of one of the most outstanding of high school choruses. The Choral Club was accredited by Mrs. Roosevelt as rendering the most spontaneous and electrical per formances of the Ballad for Americans she had ever heard. Instead of Riving its usual Easter program this year, the Choral Club collaborated with the Upper Darby Lions’ Club in the presentation of their minstrel show. Since the minstrel is given for the purpose of raising money for scholarships for the students, the Choral Club was glad for this opportunity to help in such a worthy cause. ’ 7 «1 AfP '.M Forty'eight THAT chromatic crescendo could he corrected!” says one musician to a fellow member of the concert choir as they pour over one of the selections from their large repertoire. These technical terms have been assimilated through their experience in the highly trained chorus of eighty-five members selected for the excellence of their voices after a year's participation in the Choral Club. Among the highlights of the year were perform- ances given at the Bellevuc-Stratford and Benjamin Franklin Hotels and the recording on Christmas Day over Station KYW of a transcription of Christmas music made by the Choir. Eight assembly pro- grams were given throughout the year and several performances on Dr. Dengler's weekly broadcast on Station WF1L. One of the most interesting features of the con- cert choir is the furthering and promoting of indi- vidual talent. The choir presents soloists, a girls' double trio, a mixed octet, and a male quartet, which perform frequently at the local civic organizations, women's clubs, and various charitable institutions. These accomplished groups function after school and arc representative of the infectious spirit that prevails in the entire Choral Club. Forty ninc The UpI'Dah, the oldest organization in the school, was presented this year in an entirely new form. Following the present trend of compactness, the magazine was made smaller and more concise. The main purpose of the UpI'Dah is to give recognition to those interested in the literary or artistic field and to honor those chosen for “Fidelis. Four staffs work to publish the UpI'Dah. The literary staff under the editor-in-chief and guided by Miss Edith Gaukrodger reads all manuscripts and selects those contributions best suited for publication. The art editor and her staff, with Miss Elizabeth Kingsley as adviser, illustrate the magazine. The secretaries type each article as it is selected and Mr. Shenk handles the business end. The Fighting Hova In VARSITY FOOTBALL ' 'VN paper, the varsity football season looks like a fairly disastrous one, with three wins, five losses, and one tie. However, it was a season notable for several things. One of the outstanding heart- aches was the loss to Lansdownc by the score of 2-0. For the first time in eight years the “Old Oaken Bucket passed into their hands. Lower Merion had one of the strongest teams in her history. She had bowled over one opponent after another. Even Lower Merion would admit that the absence of Dick Ambrogi from the latter part of the game probably saved her from defeat. The Royals had expected to annex the Milne Trophy permanently by winning from Haverford on Thanksgiving. The game ended in a scoreless tic, however, so that it will remain for some future aggregation to bring the prize home. Continuing their good form, they de- feated a hard-running Chester team at their first meet. In spite of the fact that their opponents in their next race had their blood sampled for medical tests, the Harriers lost to a superior Overbrook team, which eventually took second in the City Championships. After this disheartening defeat the Strangemen lost their next race to Woodbury, because of the exceptional spirit and form shown by Browning and Dan Ross. After spending sev- eral weeks training for the Suburban Champion- ship, the team unfortunately lost two of its best runners when Dick Henson and Dutch Wagner both came down with severe colds. Both saw varsity action later. Barton Goldenberg was the most consistent leader with several firsts and seconds. Hicks, Arden, and Prevail were other standbys, while Jones and Dill- man were J. The boys gave Coach Thompson a brilliant send-off with league victories over Norristown and Abington. Coach Fred Loch's charges lost their opening and closing matches to Lansdowne and Cheltenham, re' spectively, but between these two defeats they scored six straight victories to round out a season of eight dual meets. Among these victories was a 24'19 win over Paulsboro, New Jersey State Cham' pions. Leading the mat maulers to their successful sea' son were Captain Larry Vogt, who scored five straight pins during the season, A1 Filipponc, once defeated and 155 pound District champion, and John Boyle, who was 185 pound District champion, undefeated during the season and unscored upon until the District Meet. An ammunition shortage and restric- tions in travel caused the schedule to be reduced to only postal-matches and bi-weekly matches spon- sored by the National Rifle Association. But the Royal sharpshooters came through again and se- cured a place among the first ten teams in the coun- try in this competition. A five-man team was also entered in the Hearst match and made a score of 862, which is very good for a high school team. Another individual match that several of the members participated in was the Junior National Prone Championships, in which Chester Duncan received second place against country-wide com- petition. It may be necessary to disband the Purple and Gold team for the duration, although several experi- enced shooters will return next year, for the team's supply of ammunition has been nearly exhausted. This is due to the fact that U. D. was able to garner two or more places in most events to roll up high team scores. In the Delco Meet the Royals ran wild and scored 62 points, the highest tally ever made by a single team in this meet. During this meet Brcdin, broke the Delco Meet record, which he had set last year. He made the astounding jump of six feet three inches. U. Earl Biel Robert Higgins Marie Ellis John Boyle President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer J incly Class Officers anil Executive Committee TOURING our three years in high school we have been fortunate in having very efficient and capable leaders. They have helped the class of '43 to succeed in the many things, both large and small, which we have attempted. Our dances, plays, parties and our financial prob- lems have been taken care of by the Executive Com- mittee and Class Officers. Many hours of discussion and debate have been spent finding solutions to our many problems. This year the Executive Committee has been ably led by senior class president Earl Biel, who has for two years done a wonderful job in presiding over our class meetings. In his absence Bob Higgins, the vice- president takes over; while John Boyle, treasurer. spends his leisure time counting our money and keeping our class out of financial difficulty. The many letters and notes which must be written are handled by class secretary Marie Ellis, who is also very efficient in recording the minutes of the meet- ings. The Executive Committee is composed of one member from each senior homeroom, and its meet- ings arc held every Thursday. The duty of members of the Executive Committee is to bring in complaints, problems or suggestions from their homeroom; then their problems are discussed and solutions presented for these problems. Mr. Boyd and Miss Chrisman have rendered their aid to us during these meetings and offered many helpful and beneficial suggestions. For Srlinhirsliip INCE 1933 it has been the custom each year to inscribe on the Scholarship Plaque the names of those six people ranking highest in scholastic attainments. Because of so much unrest, both in school and outside, those who keep up their marks deserve even more credit than ever. It is with great pride that the “Class of 43” adds their names to the roll of honor, for these people have worked conscientiously. Because of the limitations placed upon it by the “Class of '33” only students who have been in Upper Darby for three years may attain this honor. T incty-ttfo Pat Lawless, Earl Biel, Ethel Seidenburg, Mike Durso, Marie Ellis, Bob Higgins JN 1933, the class graduating that year presented to the school two plaques. One of these is dedi' cated to service, the other to scholarship. Every year six students arc chosen from the graduating class to have their names engraved on the Service Plaque. These six, three boys and three girls, have given unselfishly of their time to the furthering of the school. They have devoted their time and efforts to music, dramatics, publications, student government, sports, and other activities. We are proud of the names to be inscribed on it this year, for they have worked long and hard for class and school. hihI Service J incty'three II EADS FEET Best Sports—Lee Ann Wagner, Mike Durso . . . America, your sons have heard and answered to the call With courage, might, they're in the fight; our flag will never fall. We honor those brave men who death and suff ring for us bore— Who pressed undaunted thro' the night of peril, toil, and war. Be not dismayed, for yet they live—yes, glorified on High! They tell us that with hope and faith a soldier cannot die. We must not fail, right shall prevail to save our land of birth: The Axis foe, we'll overthrow and banish from the earth. All fervently pray for our boys in air, on land, and sea— In God we trust and fight we must, till peace and victory. —Mabel Daniell, '43 Edward J. Barry Edward M. Miller Walter J. Coneys John B. Kerner Walter A. Lang Edward Barycki Thomas F. Quinn John A. Randall Romeo J. Rizzolo Howard W. Lorraine J. William Skidmore Lewis W. Strahley, III Kenneth W. McCormick William H. Wilkins One Hundred Fifty On Armistice Day, November 11, 1942, this service flag was dedicated at a ceremony on Memorial Field. At the time, Upper Darby men in the service numberd 857. Since that time, the number has increased tremen- dously, and is close to 1500. One Hundred Fifty-one l | |Hkr llsirliy Hook ll kr Slmro THIS war in which we are now engaged has brought many changes to Upper Darby High School—changes that we have occasionally found difficult to adjust our lives to, but changes that must be undergone since we are all out for victory. We have perhaps experienced a few inconveniences in conforming to this total war, but in so doing we have also left behind a fine record that shows countless men and women from the alumni, faculty, and student body serving in the armed forces and in vital war industries, and one that indicates that we here in school are aiding our nation's war effort in many different capacities. With the draft age lowered to eighteen and the stopping of enlistments to those over that age, this year has seen many students from all three classes joining some branch of the armed forces. Ac this writing twenty boys are serving. Teachers too have heeded the call, and ten of the faculty are now members of the army or navy. At latest count, the total of alumni and ex-students serving in all parts of the world was approximately 1,500, with that figure mounting daily. The names of these Upper Darbians who are serving arc engraved on a plaque in the service alcove and information concerning their rank and location is kept on file at the service desk. It is fortunate that from such a tremendous number only thirteen gold stars appear on this flag for those who have given their lives. For those who are serving, Upper Darby has contributed her bit. Last November a special service issue of the Acorn was sent to over 1,000 in all parts of the world, Christmas cards designed and printed by the art department were sent to everyone on the honor roll as a greeting from the school, and pupils have been urged to obtain a name from the file with whom they may correspond. For those in the service who return to the school while on leave there is the service alcove where they can view the plaque and obtain and contribute information at the service desk, where a student is constantly in attendance. Various drives held have proved successful. Outstanding were the victory book campaign in April, 1942, with a grand total of 5,501 books; the pocket scrap drive in October, 1942, in which 5,720 pounds of scrap were collected; the silk stocking drive in January, 1943, in which 2,897 silk and nylon stockings were collected; the tin-can drive which continued throughout the year; and the weekly selling of war bonds and stamps in the homerooms which altogether has yielded over $40,000. In addition to contributing to drives, students have done their share in training to be of service. Boys have been prepared to serve as fire fighters and messengers, and boys and girls have received first aid instruction so that they may be useful during an air raid. Under the supervision of the Red Cross, a corps of Canteen Aides, who serve at Jefferson Hospital, was organized in the school. Model planes have been made by boys in the industrial arts department for use by the government and army training schools and knitting has been done in clubs and by individuals. Results of a questionnaire given last November showed that over 800 high school students were employed. Many of these took the Wartime Replacement Course in Retail Selling and aided the merchants of Upper Darby during the Christmas rush. Fifteen students took the National Youth Administration course to prepare them for jobs in war factories, while others have taken advantage of training courses offered by the Western Union and by Bell Telephone. A few inconveniences such as the curtailing of transportation of teams to athletic contests and musical organizations to places of concert, the frequent air raid drills by the entire student body, and the giving up of time by over two hundred students and teachers for the pre-induction courses have been experienced. But the willingness of all to co-operate and their readiness to take on any new task beneficial to the war effort has shown that in war as in peace Upper Darby makes a notable contribution. One of the things we shall all remember was the dedication of our service flag on Armistice Day, 1942. A bitterly cold day, it was, we remenv ber, when, try as we would, we could not keep warm. The speakers sitting at the end of the field had the worst of the cold north wind that came sweeping down across the athletic field. But, in spite of all this, it was a thrilling moment when the flag was unfurled. One of our undreamed of pieces of good fortune was the visit of Mrs. Roosevelt to the Junior High School. One of the great moments of our lives was the singing of the “Ballad for Americans” for her,—an effort that won words of high praise from her. We shall never forget her gracious and winning manner. Although our effort has been little enough, we hope that it has con tributed its small part to the winning of the war. Ray Brady learning the art of welding in the N. Y. A. school. M. we started out with full packs and full equipment on 20 min' ute notice. We marched 16 miles by 7:00 o'clock in a blinding sleet storm. The ground and our bodies, packs, and rifles were covered with a film of ice. When the bugles blew “halt” and the column fell out I dropped into 3 inches of mud, pulled it up around my cars and died for 10 minutes. Then the bugles blew “fix bayonets and charge. Our gang went up that hill on the double over rocks, over bushes, through puddles, yelling and swearing to beat the band. We ran that mile up-hill, climbed the redoubt walls—and died again for ten minutes. From Harry Johnstone. At times like these when all of the strength of the nation is mus- tered for the retention of the ideal upon which our country was founded, all of us should begin to think less of materialistic things and more of important things. From Lt. (J. G.) Carson Thompson. Mare Island, California “I was just one of the Navy U. S. Marines on Guadalcanal in the Solomons fighting the Japs and going thru jungle hardships day after day, until the day came along that I too was listed as a casualty and taken to the Field Hospital. While I was lying there the night before I was evacuated to a better hospital in New Herbrides I heard someone whistling as they were walking by outside and I thought I recognized the tunc. All of a sudden it came to me that it was “U. D. Will Shine Tonight.” I asked the Corpsman to see who was whistling and the fellow came in. It was an Upper Darby boy, but I can't say his name for he's still there as far as I know. “But it just goes to prove that even in far off battlefields like Guadalcanal, high school days and songs, like home, are often thought about. John H. Krimmel. Pearl Harbor. Oahu, T. H. “The ship that brought me to the islands also brought Bob Owings, '37. Our meeting was quite unusual as the ship was blacked out and I recog- nized him by his voice only. We had a lengthy chat but it was not until the next day that we actu- ally saw each other. Bob is now on the Hawaiian Frontier Patrol on a small vessel. From Stanley Boardman, 37. A Toast to Bud Wilkins Written by a fellow officer of Ensign William Wilkins, filled November 14, 1942 “Here's a toast to you, Mr. Wilkins; a toast and a prayer. To the laughter in your bright blue eyes; the youth and strength in your boundless energy; the friendliness in associating; the imagery of your imagination, in that every landing strip was the deck of a carrier. Often a friendly ship, a fancied enemy upon which to practice a gunnery run. To the quiet, sure way you won our hearts, to your constancy of purpose and purity of living, we salute you and pray that your treasured memory will help, keep us “on the beam” in our daily flight through life so that when our last landing is completed our spirits may take off and join with yours in the everlasting formation of souls that fly through God's illimitable space.” One Hundred Fifty-six GUESTS DATE NAME SERVICE RESIDENCE REMARKS , J . 3 v« a T e. l jh (%-rrAts (IcdLZs W- i A -'Ji '3, ‘7 Hi %SL fa fat‘ZiS £ r 1 £p)v £).
