T0 MAKE BETTER 55 HE land and the people and the Hag-the land a continent, people of every race, the flag a symbol of what humanity may aspire to when the wars are over and the barriers are down, to these each generation must be dedicated and consecrated anew, to defend with life itself, if need be, but above all, in friendliness, in hope, in courage, to live for. The above paragraph is quoted from an editorial in the New York Times of June fourteenth, nineteen hundred and forty. The thought is particularly pertinent to thinking Americans who take seriously the education of the Nation's children. For more and more people realize that if loyalty founded upon friendli- ness and hope and courage are essential qualities of mature citizens they must be developed in youth. And so in today's schools those qualities are fostered that will make better Americans. Football and basketball games, debates, social functions and the many other school activities engender school spirit which, to the youth of America, is their first real feel of loyalty.
