STATELY green trees, velvety terraced lawns, cerise and scarlet azaleas lending foreground and background to some fourteen thousand homes- modest, large, and elaborate. That is spring and summer in our community. Stately trees bowed to the ground under a burden of snow, skiers, sledders and sliders transforming the hilly, winding roads and the drifted slopes into a miniature ice carnival. That is winter in our community. So like any other typically American community, Upper Darby with its fiftyfsix thousand residents and its progressive and prosperous business center continues to enjoy itself and to expand into all va' cant lots. But its expansion is not only confined to material expansiong it realizes that its future is def pendant upon its citizenry. It is cognizant of the fact that its boys and girls in school are the future men and women who must intelligently carry on if progress is to bei constant. It was this philosophy and spirit that gave birth to the establishment of Upper Darby Senior High School and made possible the graduation in 1896 of that first class of live proud seniors who had completed the high school course. Through the next fortyfnve years the Senior High School ex' panded until today the student body numbers nine' teen hundred and the faculty ninety. What does the next fortyffive years hold in store for Upper Darby? Will it continue to grow? We who are writing this book hold the answer in our hands.
