EX LIBRIS PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF UPPER DARB tfr.l HGH SCHOOL, UPPER DARBY t PENNSYLVANIA TO MAKE IIETTEK land and the people and the flag—the land a continent, -B- people of every race, the flag a symbol of what humanity may aspire to when the wars are over and the barriers arc down; to these each generation must be dedicated and consecrated anew, to defend with life itself, if need be, but above all, in friendliness, in hope, in courage, to live for.” The above paragraph is quoted from an editorial in the New York Times of June fourteenth, nineteen hundred and forty. The thought is particularly pertinent to thinking Americans who take seriously the education of the Nation’s children. For more and more people realize that if loyalty founded upon friendli- ness” and hope” and courage” are essential qualities of mature citizens they must be developed in youth. And so in today’s schools those qualities are fostered that will make better Americans. Football and basketball games, debates, social functions and the many other school activities engender school spirit which, to the youth of America, is their first real feel of loyalty. Nor is this kind of school loyalty any less the result of the other qualities noted in the quotation. AMERICANS Jf ’'Friendliness” is the order of the school day. In class, in laboratory, in gym, in assembly and in club, a genial friendliness prevails—not only between pupil and pupil but between pupil and teacher. ’’Courage,” although not quite of the same type perhaps that the author of the editorial had in mind, yet made of the same stuff—is also developed in school. Courage of one’s convic- tions, courage of one’s conscience—these are normal experiences. And ’’hope” is none the less obscure as a school lesson. The hope of making good, the hope of success is a driving force in the life of every high school student. And so the Schools of the Nation make their contributions toward making better Americans. Because I liey have been so considerate, so encouraging and so under standing, and because they have helped to make these three years of Senior High School so enjoyable and so meaningful, vve, the class of nineteen-forty-one, wish to publicly express our deep appreciation and, therefore, do gratefully dedicate this nineteen'forty'one Oak to our genial class advisers, our very sincere friends, Miss Emma Sommerfield and Mr. William T. Rule. That is spring and summer in our community. Stately trees bowed to the ground under a burden of snow, skiers, sledders and sliders transforming the hilly, winding roads and the drifted slopes into a miniature ice carnival. That is winter in our community. So like any other typically American community. Upper Darby with its fifty-six thousand residents and its progressive and prosperous business center continues to enjoy itself and to expand into all va- cant lots. But its expansion is not only confined to material expansion; it realizes that its future is dc- pendent upon its citizenry. It is cognizant of the fact that its boys and girls in school arc the future men and women who must intelligently carry on if progress is to bo constant. It was this philosophy and spirit that gave birth to the establishment of Upper Darby Senior High School and made possible the graduation in 1896 of that first class of five proud seniors who had completed the high school course. Through the next forty-five years the Senior High School ex- panded until today the student body numbers nine- teen hundred and the faculty ninety. What does the next forty-five years hold in store for Upper Darby? Will it continue to grow? We who are writing this book hold the answer in our hands. Upper Darby has always been fortunate to have men and women of high calibre for members of the school board. These members realize the responsibility which they have accepted and have unselfishly given of their time and efforts. These members work together with the superintendent and principal to keep the school system running smoothly. More appreciation should be given to them for their unselfish service. We shall ever cherish his guid- ance and long remember his fifteen years of faithful service in the Upper Darby Schools. rliss Burgess, Dr. Sampson's ecretary, lakes a letter. THREE MAJOR COURSES ARE OFFERER 'THREE courses, one in col- m lege preparation, one in business training, and one in general work, are offered to satisfy the different needs of the students. Statistics show that ap- proximately fifty-five per cent of the senior class are gradu- ating in either the academic or scientific groups of the College Preparatory course. Boys are found to be in the majority in the scientific di- vision, while the academic group has a higher percentage of girls. These students look forward to entering college, university, or some higher form of educational institu- tion. Those taking the commer- cial training number thirty per cent. This course branches into four divisions in the junior year, giving an opportunity for specialization in stenography, accounting, salesmanship, and general business. The remaining fifteen per cent are made up of those students who wish to have training which will fit them for employment immediately after graduation. The Gen- eral Course is also divided into separate divisions, the practical and cultural groups. The course gives the student an opportunity to study home economics, and shop work, but also contains a taste of language, literature, science, and mathematics. If you choose to take the College Preparatory Course, it may be that you will take the academic curricu- lum. If you do, one of your re- quired courses will be history. Here, a young lady points to a spot of interest on the map. If you do not choose the aca- demic curriculum in the College Preparatory Course, then you must take the scientific. This will mean that along the way you must struggle valiantly with such head- aches as physics and chemistry. Twenty for stu i: ts! yahifi akilitiks In the General Course the girls are bound to find themselves cast in the role of home-makers. Sewing and cooking are required subjects. Not all the savory odors detected about the building come from the cafeteria. Some emanate from cooking class. The boys in the General Course take life and limb in hand whilst they work in the machine shop. This young man looks quite efficient and collected as he operates the drill press. Many students choose the Com- mercial Course with its varied cur- ricula. Some take stenography and typing; others, retail selling; still others, a general business course. The becoming young lady in this picture is taking dictation. Twenty-one What do teachers do when they are not teaching? Weil, chemistry teachers are kept quite busy preparing materials for experiments, and doing a little experimenting of their own. Mr. Stevens, head of the Science department, weighs some chemicals much as he might wish his students to do. Miss Leaman looks as if she might be trying to worry a three no-trump bid out of a two- diamond hand, and her compatriot, Mrs. Messick, might be noting down the score. As a matter of fact, both are busy keeping the li- brary records straight—a never-ending job— they will assure you. TEH FACULTY WHO HAVE THE Some people believe that dress making is a lost art. If that is so, it is true in spite of the training that our girls get in their Home Economics classes. Here Miss Foster is in- structing the girls in the cutting out and sew- of material. We hope this knowledge will help you to balance the household budget in later Many a girl has spent a sleepless night try- ing to figure the proper way to get over that horse in gym without endangering life and property. A mouth-filling phrase and a pretty one, but Miss Kingsley, the art teacher, looks just a little critical about the whole busi- ness. None the less, it’s a refreshing moment one finds when he steps into the art room and finds on board and in the atmosphere evidences of culture and refinement. Dr. Wallick is apparently helping a puzzled student crack a very difficult problem in eco- nomics. Teaching economics and social studies these days is enough to drive one distraught. If the world would only make up its mind on what basis it is going to operate, it would be a lot easier for all of us. KXTS FOKE3IOST I T II E I II IIKMtTS MWS N Ml. THE CLUBS mSTRU ALGETRARCA The Algetrarca Club offers the mathe- matically-minded students of the school the opportunity of meeting together to enjoy the discussion of some of the interesting and unusual phases of mathematics that are not ordinarily taught in the classrooms. Directed by Miss Bock, these followers of Euclid and Einstein conduct math bees, re- ceive instruction in the use of the slide rule, and even probe into the mysteries of the fourth dimension. The social event of the club is a spring banquet, which ends the year's activities. ARCHERY CLUB “It can't happen here” might have been an appropriate Upper Darby reaction to the William Tell story before U. D. Archery Club was organized—but it is quite inappropriate today. It can happen here; in fact, it does happen when brain and brawn are harnessed to a given goal. The club, composed of sixty members, is divided into two sections, one shooting on Mondays and the other shooting on Wed- nesdays. During the winter months when activity in this sport is impossible, one busi- ness meeting is held each month. BEAUX-ARTS Under the supervision of Miss Kingsley, the Beaux-Arts was organized for those pupils who appreciate art and wish to further themselves in this field. The club entered work in the Scholastic Art Contest, and sponsored a soap carving contest for those interested in sculpturing. Pictures are supplied weekly for the main bulletin board. In its first year of existence the club has attracted considerable attention for the cooperation and service it has ren- dered to the school. Thirty-four ARS POETAE The Ars Poetae is one of the outstand- ing literary clubs.of the school. The meetings are held every third Tuesday of the month and are marked by programs of various types. A program committee plans plays, poetic games, and has the members read well known poems. The main project of the club was three beautiful scrapbooks of pictures and poems which were given to the children at the Delaware County Home at Christmas time. During the year a tea was given for the members of the club with an interesting program. A mother and daughter tea was also given in May with many of the club members participating in the entertainment. BOYS' BOWLING CLUB Although it has been formed for two years, the Boys' Bowling Club is in its first year as a chartered organization. Spon- sored by Mr. Wolfgang, this club has ad- vanced rapidly. Under the leadership of four officers, this organization has formed teams within itself, which compete with one another. Upon joining a newly or- ganized suburban bowling league, this club advanced rapidly. The result was the win- ning of a trophy presented by this league. Medals were presented to those persons having the highest average, the high game, the most improved score and the members of the winning team at a banquet at the end of the season. GIRLS’ BOWLING CLUB All girls interested in bowling as a pleas- ure as well as exercise belong to the Girls' Bowling Club. With pep and enthusiasm they assemble each week at the Lansdowne Bowling Alleys. The event of the year is the tournament with the Boys' Bowling Club, which event occurred in January. This year the club was divided into teams and was asked to enter the Women's Bowl- ing League of Philadelphia for competition with other schools. Thirty- five Clubs COMMERCE CLUB Students who are looking forward to taking their place in the business world compose the members of this club. They offer their services to the school as stenog' raphers and typists in return for the valu' able experience received. During the year, the club entertains speakers from various fields of business, and publishes an annual newspaper. The doggie roast in the fall and the pic nic at Valley Forge in the spring are two of the annual events in the social life of the club. CHESS The aim of the Chess Club is to further the interest in chess and to help its mem' bers improve their games by competition with each other and with other schools. The members play for practice as well as enjoyment. The team is composed of Marvin Albert, Arthur Coffin, Jean Gilmore, Gre- gor McConnell, Frank Bowden and Carol Andre. Marvin Albert and Arthur Coffin are the ace players. The club is sponsored by Mr. Twoes. DEBATING The Debating Team, under the able di' rection of Coach R. Wayne Boyd is a member of the Suburban Debating League. In debates with Lower Merion, Lansdowne, Bridgeport, and Norristown, the affirmative team closed with two favorable decisions and one tie while the negative team won two and lost two. The last debate of the season with Radnor was an Oxford debate in which neither school received a decision. Varsity members of the squad were Cap' tains Doris Barnett and Jane Evans, Elmer Talcott, Marjorie Davis, Patricia Lawless, Joan Moorhead and Elaine Klebanoff. FENCING Almost any afternoon while walking through the upper corridor, one might be stopped by a sign, “STOP, Fencing in Progress.” During these hours after school, the Fencing Team practices for its matches. The Girls' Fencing Team is conv posed of R. B. Nickcll, Manager; M. Schuttz; N. Brown; and D. Moore. The Boys' Fencing Team is D. Gangwick, B. Klaus, D. Marsden and D. Arden. Com' bining the wins and losses of both teams, the record is about even. FRENCH CLUB Parley wous francais? Fragments of such conversation may be heard during a French Club meeting on the third Thursday of every month. At such meetings fifty boys and girls of French classes, two, three and four, gather together to get better ac- quainted with the language, the people, and the country which they arc studying. French Club highlights of the year were a Christ' mas program, and in the month of Fcbru' ary, a Tea-Dance, supplanting the banquet usually given. FIRST AID The First Aid and Social Service Club was organized several years ago bv a group of girls interested in nursing and social service work. The club has a wide and varied program. Its activities in the school include helping with Welfare work at Christmas time and taking charge of the Infirmary when Mrs. Wolstcnholme, its adviser, is absent. The outside activities in' elude trips to various hospitals and other institutions of interest to its members. Clubs GERMAN CLUB The purpose of the German Club is to acquaint students with German customs and to enable them to speak German more fluently. The club has three main events: a doggie roast in the fall, a Christmas party, at which time Santa Claus makes his appearance, and a banquet, which closes the season. Meeting on Monday, the mem' hers depict some phase of life in Germany and speak only German. HIPPOCRATES Members of the Hippocrates Society aim to make a systematic study of elementary medicine through the observation of mod- ern medicine and surgery in actual prac- tice. The society visits medical schools, hospitals, laboratories, and attends various lectures given by different colleges and societies throughout the city. The society was formed only two years ago and took its name from the recognized “father of medicine,” Hippocrates. HISTORY CLUB The History Club, one of Upper Darby's oldest clubs, this year held a schoolwide mock presidential election. This activity held in conjunction with the World Affairs Forum proved to be one of the most suc- cessful ventures ever undertaken by this organization. Due to the fact that the senior class chose New York for its annual trip the club had to forego its plans to visit that city. The club owes its success largely to its adviser, Dr. Bruce Thomas. BOYS’ Hl-Y Capably caring for the lost and found and the information desk throughout the past year, the Boys' Hi-Y deserves high praise and for their ushering at various school functions. The club also did yeo- men work during the Christmas welfare drive—collecting and distributing baskets and toys. By far its greatest venture, was a most successful dance, held at Upper Darby Junior High late in April. Under the able direction of its genial adviser, Mr. John Diehl, the club has advanced very far. GIRLS’ Hl-Y With Miss Gaukrodger as an inspiring leader, the Girls’ Hi-Y tries to do its best to make life at Upper Darby happier and more meaningful. The club has again ac- cepted responsibility for the Information Desk, the Lost and Found, and the Christ- mas Welfare Work. The club served as host at the annual Mother and Daughter Banquet and at the Hockey Dinner. Char- acter, scholarship, and service arc the three “hi's in Hi-Y. HORACE MANN SOCIETY The Horace Mann Society, a club of one year's growth, is sponsored by Miss Ferree to help the members to grow along the lines of their chosen profession of teaching. Pamphlets and booklets arc read and discussed for this purpose. This year the charter was renewed, and the club sent two members to the Drexcl Conference on Democracy in the Secondary Schools. The club was privileged to have interesting speakers this year concerning teaching. Clubs LATIN CLUB Sixty Latin enthusiasts hold membership in the “Senatus Populus Que Romanus, the official name of the Latin Club, now in its twelfth year of organization. Pro- grams at the monthly meetings consist of Latin readings, plays, singing, and talks and slides on Roman life. All new mem- hers of the club experience an initiation in true Roman fashion at their first meeting. Toga clad students representing the three Fates sprinkle their foreheads with water and clip a lock of hair in accordance with an age-old ceremony. LIBRARY CLUB Membership in the Library Club offers to those interested a splendid opportunity of learning something about library work and of being of service to the school. The members are assigned one period every other week to work in the library and dur- ing this time they stamp books, put them away, and keep the shelves in good order. Outside activities include a doggie roast in the fall and a Mother and Daughter Banquet in the spring. LEEUWENHOEK The Leeuwenhoek Society was organized for the purpose of aiding those interested in biology to make research and to gain more information beyond what is offered in the classroom. The organization aids the Science Department by making slides for the biology classes, cleaning microscopes and various other tasks, while, at the same time, benefitting its members by the experi- ence gained. This year the members have taken field trips to many hospitals and have had several demonstrations by outside speak- ers at their meetings. RIFLE CLUB You've seen them garbed in khaki cloth- ing, sprawling on the floor of Upper Dar- by's attic. You're right—the Rifle Club. Here, every afternoon in the spring and fall they learn to shoot under the capable supervision of Miss Weimer and Messers. Wood, Billingslea, and Morris. The club sponsored a turkey shoot at Thanksgiving and as a fitting finale to the year closed with a recording dance on the range. The club is a member of the National Rifle As- sociation of America. RIDING CLUB The Riding Club has sponsored several supper rides during the fall and spring in addition to the Horse Show in May, which is the highspot of the year. The club is open to both boys and girls. Those desiring to become full-fledged members, and en- titled to a pin, must ride at least ten times during a semester. Several interesting lec- tures were held to acquaint the members with the proper method of saddling, and other fine points of horsemanship. STEINMETZ SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY The Steinmetz Scientific Society, our first club, has for fifteen years, faithfully lived up to its standards of “Science, service, and the school.” It offers those boys who arc generally interested in science the op- portunity to work in any field of scientific research, and, at the same time, to serve the school by taking care of the slides and moving pictures, backstage work, and am- plification. This year, the club sponsored a photography contest which was open to the whole school. The Steinmetz Scientific Society has held the honor of acting as sec- retary to the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science for three years. X CUKS PLEIADES CLUB Give them a play and a stage and the Pleiades members are at home. They set to work, and under student direction pre sented The Trees as their annual Christ' mas production. The club secured speakers, well known on the stage, for their programs and in June went to Hedgerow Theatre in Moylan for a picnic. Here, also, they saw the famous Hedgerow players. The inspiration which they derived may produce yet a Fontanne or a Lunt. Indeed, this was a fitting dos ing to a good season of fun and work. WORLD AFFAIRS FORUM The World Affairs Forum continued its policy of having at least one major object in which the interested student can partici- pate by sponsoring first, with the History Club, a mock presidential election; and second, it sponsored a day in a mock House of Representatives. The club's members also gave talks in the various home rooms, took part in a project at Temple University, and formed panels for discussions on topics of current interest. Forty-two TAY-WISTALVAN Tay-Wistalvan is a club organized for those girls interested in literature of all types. Under the able leadership of its sponsors, Mrs. Schwartz and Miss Weimer, the girls discuss books, both new and classi' cal, plays, and motion pictures. Few peo' pie realize that the name of the club is de- rived from parts of the names of famous personages in the literary world. Tay from Bayard Taylor, Wist from Owen Wistcr, A1 from Louise May Alcott, and Van from Henry Van Dyke. TEE-BALL The Tee'Ball Club is a relatively new addition to the extra-curricular activities of the school, for it has been organized for only two years. The meetings are held every other Monday and the practices alternate with the meetings. In the winter these practices arc held on the golf range, which is next to the rifle range in the school. In the summer the club practices either on the range behind the school or on the Llan- erch Golf Course. Mr. Wallace, the spon- sor, and his helper. Miss Frear, hope to have a successful season this year. The golf team rises from this Tee-Ball Club. There will be from five to seven members on the team. TABLE TENNIS CLUB The Table Tennis Club is composed of approximately seventy-nine members. The club’s aim is for recreation and enjoyment as well as competition. Although no out- side matches could be arranged by Mr. Stermer, the club's sponsor, a tournament was held for boys and girls, to determine the ten best in each group. Forty'three Tlieir Word is Law 31 DLDED after the machinery of the United States Government, the student gov ernment body of Upper Darby Senior High School proceeds to carry on its work, perhaps not as skillfully as our United States Government but at least attempting as hard to do its task. The president of our governing body is our principal and the teachers are his cabinet. The Student Council is the legislature; the Tribunal, the Supreme Court; and the Monitors, the so'called policemen, who keep peace and order. With these departments, life at Upper Darby High School proceeds in an orderly fashion. The monitors or policemen keep order in the lunchroom and halls at noontime. Each person has a certain post and the chairman of the monitors makes a round every day to see that each post is being filled. There are six boys and six girls elected from each class by popular vote every report period. The latter part of this year a new system was inaugurated and tried whereby those who chose to volunteer for service signed up. The success of this trial will probably determine whether this system will be used next year. It is an organization that has slack seasons, but when it has a case to try is on the job. The Student Council, which meets every Thursday morning in the Library, has a threefold purpose in the school. First, to act as a clearing house for ideas; second, to give its members experience in such meetings; third, to inaugurate and lead certain projects within the school. Membership includes the president from each homeroom and one representative from seventeen service organizations, including cluhs and publi- cations. Three important activities of the past year were the welfare project, the tutelage system, and the care of school property. The welfare project involved the distribution of Christmas baskets throughout the community. The tutelage system made possible the tutoring of persons, outstanding in sports and yet not eligible to par- ticipate in them because of low grades by pupils of high scholarship. Another important activity was a concerted drive to bring about a proper regard for school property. Since Student Council fulfilled its threefold purpose, the year 1940-41 was very suc- cessful. For the first time in its history, the A Cappella elected a presi- dent. Mary Rcminger has proved herself a very capable one. This year’s schedule was very full. The choir sang at two churches, St. James’ Church, Olney, and the Broad Street Methodist Church. They sang at Irvine Auditorium for the Cultural Olympics. They went to Bethlehem High School to sing an exchange program. For the first time they entered the Forensic League competition at Norristown, in which they came in first. Only fifty were selected from the choir to sing in the competition. The choir was invited to sing at the Na- tional Music Teachers' convention at Atlantic City. Some of the choral club members accompanied them on this trip. The following day a selected group returned to Atlantic City to sing again. Among the other invitations which the choir received were one to sing over Station WFIL to celebrate National Music Week, another to sing with the Choral Arts Society at their 20th anniversary concert, and to sing at the Lions' Community Day. Lilting Lyrics rJ,HE Upper Darby Senior High School’s largest and best known club is the Choral Club under Mr. Clyde R. Dengler's direction. It boasts four hundred members. Their activities this year included the popular annual Steel Pier Frolic, the singing of Olivet to Calvary by Maunder at the Easter Concert, an exchange program at Reading, their trip to Willow Grove, and their entertainment of the Penn State Boys' Glee Club just before that organization gave its program to a packed audience. The soloists for the Choral Club included Mr. William Maun, baritone; Mr. Harry Danner, tenor; Mrs. Pauline W. Dengler, soprano, and Miss Vivian Walton, accompanist. As in previous years, the alumni members of the Club were again invited to sing at the Easter Cantata. Nancy Frain has been a splendid president. To help her were John Fitzgibbons, vice-president; Betty Saling, secretary, and Charles Wooster, treasurer. A large part of the success with which the club carried on its varied activities and functioned so smoothly was due to the helpful assistance of Dr. Dame, who gave generously of his time and effort as financial adviser. Wallace for the first time, the combined staffs of eight typists, six business assistants, and forty- three reporters, issued the four-page weekly. At Christmas time, the staff produced an eight-page paper with a special alumni section. “Nearly everybody throws the bull,” was the slogan of “The Evening Bull, this year's April Ftxil Issue, which deviated from custom when it presented a four-page parody of a Philadelphia paper. This issue was the work of a selected group of staff members. In March the staff was the recipient of a first-prize medal from the Columbia Scho- lastic Press Association. Earlier in the season two staff members, together with Miss Zita Mallon, Mr. Wallace and Mr. Clayton Shenk, attended a two day convention of the Pennsylvania Scholastic Press Association in Pittsburgh. Noteworthy among the accomplishments of the Acorn this year was the campaign for a new school, and the special issue in protest to a resolution passed by the School Board to take over all activity finances. Any student is eligible for a staff position on the paper. A special journalism course is offered as a part of the curricula, but it not a requisite that AcoRN-ites take it. Fifty'Six Creative Expression WJPPER DARBY'S literary magazine, now in its twenty-fourth year, is the oldest school publication. The main purpose of the Upi Dah is to give those students in the school who enjoy creative writing a chance to display their talents along various literary lines such as poetry, essays, and all types of fiction. The entire Upi-Dah staff is composed of three separate staffs, each under the direction of a separate adviser and separate student editor or manager. The Literary Staff has the duty of collecting manuscripts, criticising them, and reading proofs and galleys. Miss Gaukrodgcr, the chief adviser, works mainly with this staff. With the editor she selects material with the best comments. This material is then typed by the five secretaries, who performed a very important task. The Art Staff, with its new supervisor, Miss Kingsley, designs the cover, the flydeaf, and draws the illustrations for the various articles selected by the Literary Staff. The Literary and Art Staffs work together on the final page layouts. The Business Staff, under the advisorship of Mr. Shenk, handles the financial end of the magazine, taking care of the ads, collecting the price of the magazine, and other matters. Victory was insured by the timely act of Captain Art Leary, who, in the closing minutes of the fray, blocked the kick which would have knotted the score. Again in the Radnor game, the Purple and Gold squad weakened in the final frame and allowed a strong Red team to gain a 6-6 tie. Upper Darby’s burly fullback, George Rcmcntcr, hit pay dirt in both these tilts to start the scoring parade for the Purple and Gold. The well-known and feared pass duo in suburban circles started with this game when Walt Carlin heaved the ball to Frank King for the contest's first tally. The Abington Ghosts, who later in the season were proclaimed Suburban chanv pions, found their toughest assignment in subduing Upper Darby. When the final whistle sounded, the Upi-Dahs found themselves defeated but far from beaten as the loss was by the slimmest of margins, 13'12. This was due to the injury-riddled condition of the squad as much as to its loosening up in the late periods. Media, on a bleak Friday afternoon took Upper Darby into camp with a 14'7 triumph. The following week found the always troublesome Cheltenham Panthers and Upper Darby tie, 7-7. Four periods of football went for naught as the Maroon of Lower Merion and Upper Darby battled to a scoreless deadlock. Walt Carlin put on one of the greatest displays of punting seen anywhere during the past season when his booming punts helped stave off threat after threat of the Ardmore tide. The game, played on Villa- novas wind-swept stadium also brought a reserve into the limelight as Jackie Sanders aided Upper Darby in its moral victory against an eminently more powerful foe. Closing the season in a blaze of glory, the Royal gridders trounced an outclassed Haverford eleven 19-6 on Memorial Field. Vengeful, after the stunning defeat that had been administered to them the previous year, Upper Darby was never headed in a contest that saw some of the season's greatest thrills produced. As in the Lower Merion game, reserves again shone brightly as Jackie Sanders and Jack Dreher accounted Sixty'four for all three Upper Darby scores. Once again Walt Carlin put on a display of kicking that had the spectators agog. Next year will find such satellites as Cap- tain Art Leary, Walt Carlin, Frank King, George Rementer, Joe Brandolini, Bill Russell, Bill Masseth, and Charles Gallagher missing when the first call is sent out for candidates. A football coach’s life is a hard one. All he seems to do is to train good material and then lose it. Coach Mefort has our sympathy, but he also has our confidence that he will again emerge with a winning combination. Jack Sanders, who came into his own late in the season, makes a fine dash around end to pick lip yardage in the Lower Merion game. Wolf brings down his man in the Cheltenham game as Captain Leary storms through looking for prey. George Rementer, burly fullback, cracks through Episcopal on one of his many gains of the season. The brighter side of the season was the defeats handed to the Abington, Cheltenham, and Haverford squads. These victories were a result of smooth teamwork which seemed to improve as the season progressed. Several of the Junior Varsity players were developed to the point where their outstanding floorwork and their ability to split the cords was recognized and on various occasions they were called upon to inject new spirit into the playing of the Varsity squad. The experience gained by the menv bers of the J. V. will very definitely aid Coach Thompson in rounding out his Varsity squad for the coming year. THROUGH THE HOOP HDACHING the girls basketball team for the fourth consecutive year, Miss Ann Jackson issued a call early in the month of December for prospective members for this year's basketball squad. Among the ranks of the optimistic candidates, three guards and two forwards from last year's varsity team returned for the try outs. Doris Bennett, varsity guard since her sophomore year and this year's Varsity captain; Mildred Darlington, a senior, and Kitty Conohan, a junior, were first string guards on the '39 sextette. Jean Dinsmore, a senior, and junior Evelyn Sanders were good point- getters in the forward ranks for the last year's squad. Seventy-eight Getting off to a bouncing start by defeating Haverford with a score of 37 8, the Purple and Gold Royalettes marched through two more victories defeating Swarthmore and Ridley Park 43-37 and 20'16, respectively. However, this winning streak came to an end when the U. D. sextette was bowed by a 31-30 setback at the hands of the Norristown undefeated six on the latter's home court. Radnor and Lower Merion brought about the other two setbacks of the season for the Royalettes, leaving the tally at the end of the season with five wins and three losses. Due to a lack of forward material, Captain Doris Bennett was forced to leave her regular position of guard and take up a new post as forward. Unaccustomed as she was to filling this berth on the Varsity, Captain Bennett was high-scorer of the season with a grand total of 105 points. Petite Evie Sanders was runner-up with 96 points. Because of exceptionally strong defensive support, the Purple and Gold sextette was able to hold their opponents to a total of 198, while the Royalette Varsity piled up a total of 261 points in a comparatively successful season. Returning next season will be only two of this year's varsity, Kitty Conohan, a guard, and Evie Sanders, forward. A lot may be expected of Sanders due to her high scoring record for this year. Other positions on the squad will be filled by members of this year's Junior Varsity team. SCHEDULE Opp. U.D. Winning seven out of the eight games played, there was only one dark spot in the entire season. The Purple and Gold sextette was handed the lone defeat of the year by the Norristown courtsters. It was a hard-fought game on foreign ground, Norristown winning 20-25. Fast floorwork and close-knit team work chalked up the victories for the U. D. squad. Since many of this season's players will be moved to varsity berths next year, prospects for the coming season remain rather doubtful. However, this large-sized gap in the U. WITH THE GREATEST OF EASE Old-timers will remember that some few years ago, Mr. Herzog, head of the physical education department, tried rather successfully to stimulate an interest in volley ball and apparatus work. There was a good deal of enthusiasm among the boys about these two extra-curricular sports—so much, in fact, that matches were arranged with other schools, in which the Royals gave a good account of themselves. As time went on, however, and no one was found to direct the volley-ball team, it fell by the way. For several years, Mr. Loeb coached the gym team. It was a popular sport, both for the participants and spectators. This year, however, Mr. Loeb became the wrestling coach, and consequently, could not find the time to help the gym team. As a result, interest has lagged to the extent that no matches have been scheduled. We hope that in the coming years this splendid sport may be revived, because it is one that could give pleasure and enjoyment to its team-members for many years after graduation.
