Their league record reads 11 wins and 5 losses,- the season’s record—1 3 and 7. Individual performances seemed to play a big part in the U. D. cause, for lanky Charlie Gauer, Royal pivot-man, annexed the Suburban Con- ference scoring championship with 175 points, an average of 12.5 per game. In addition, Gauer was chosen on the all-Suburban and all- Scholaslic teams. Upper Darby started the season with four lettermen returning fron) the championship 1938 array. With Gauer running wild in the early games, the Royals took five straight league tilts, then bogged down before the determined play of Haverford, Norristown, and Lower Merion. Standing in fifth place, U. D. made a furious late-season rush, winning six straight to wind up behind Norristown in Suburban 1 competition. Incidentally, the Royals knocked Norristown out of a possible tie for first place with the Lower Merion Aces. 92
