MRS. CAROL ALLEN American Government. Economics. Sociology MR. RICHARD LARKIN World History MISS ANN TODD American Government We review the past MR. STEPHEN PRITCHETT American Government MR. RICHARD MILLER American Government. Economics. Sociology Maps were used extensively as World History students studied the development of cultures in different parts of the world. Students observed the relationships between the historical patterns of the past and those of today. American History classes studied the development of New World colonies into a new nation and the growth of this nation to a world power. The political development of the nation was emphasized. This study gave students a better understanding of how the United States reached its present role in world affairs. The American Government course aimed to teach students their future responsibilities in running our government. Class members studied our government by comparing it to other forms of government, by studying its development, and by observing it as it functions today. They also studied current events, both in the United States and in foreign nations. Economics and Sociology are specialized courses in the basic social studies program. Economics students studied various financial systems and their application today. Sociology dealt with the behavior patterns of people and how they affect society. MR. MRS. SHIRLEY WOOTON Russian I. II. HI. IV in other languages Perfection of pronunciation skills was emphasized in foreign language classes. Students spoke only the foreign language in the classroom, and when they had acquired basic skills they were expected to discuss various topics. Skits provided entertainment and oral practice. Tapes by natives of the country were available in the language laboratory. Beginning French students concentrated on grammar, as well as studying French history and doing extensive reading. Later they gained a background in French culture and customs. In French V students had a survey of MISS MILDRED WAGNER MRS. MARTHA MALLOY French literature. Latin nI iv Latin I. II Spanish students acquired a basic understanding of the language in the beginning. Then they studied Spanish history, culture, and the social and economic conditions in Spanish speaking countries. Outside reading was required. Learning a new alphabet was difficult for Russian students. They practiced oral comprehension extensively and studied Russian history and customs. Advanced students read several novels. With a general background from Latin I. students progressed to a study of Caesar and mythology in Latin II. Cicero's orations were studied in Latin III and IV this year. 25 In the language lab student listen to native speech
