Superintendent Mm .aaa Bell, Book, and Candle For students, the school bell rings only nine months a year--for Upper Arlington's Walter B. Heischman, it rings all year long. As superintendent of the high-school system and executive of the school board, he works through the nine school months carrying out school policies, interviewing teachers, and supervising the general wel- fare of the school. In the summer, as a conscientious man and a hard worker, he plans for the successful operation of the coming school year. Education is a year-round job and a life's work. Mr. Heischman prepared for his educational career as a physical science major at Capitol University and received his Master's Degree at O. S. U. He taught science and coached basketball at Arlington before becoming principal of the elementary school. In 1951 he became super- intendent. Mr. Heischman has been at Arlington 23 years. As an experienced educator, Mr. Heischman believes that Arling- ton's experiment in dividing the classes on the basis of past achievement is a major improvement. Arlington's first and most important job is to train students to do their best--to work hard and to have a firm background on which to work. This method of division of classes has been found to give the best results in other schools, and I think it will be effective in Arlington.
